Having some problems with my 2000 Tacoma. It has 116k miles on it. Spark plugs and wires were replaced 3k miles ago. For a while the check engine light would flicker on for a few seconds and then go away, no other problems. Just yesterday tho, the engine light stayed on and the truck runs terrrrible. Studders really bad and can barely get up to speed. Got the codes read and it showed cyl. 5 misfire and low coolant. Im not gonna go into the low coolant yet, I will check it once the engine is cold.

Anyways. I took it to the dealership (that i work at) and the tech checked the plugs and they were good so he said it must be the coil pack. I just replaced it and it runs a litttttle better but still is pretty bad. The check engine light came back on and it still reads cyl. 5 misfire. Another thing to note- it runs perfect when the engine is cold. Makes me think it may be something to do with the low coolant? Anyways, who has some ideas? Plugs and wires are all OEM. I just pulled the pos. terminal from the battery to try resetting it again.

THANKS

Could it be one of the wires? The engine gets warm and something creates a short or ground? :dunno:

jordan,

take all the plugs out and examine each one. i had a misfire many moons ago and it turned out that one of the plugs was incorrectly gapped. yours might not be, but it looks like your process of elimination did not include spark plug inspection

X2

Just buy another plug and change it out because sometimes they can have a tiny crack in the ceramic which is barely visible and at $2 for a plug it's a cheap and easy fix if that is indeed the issue. If that doesn't cure it, then I'd change the wires. Then if your still looking at a misfire code on that same cylinder, it's time to begin suspecting a bad fuel injector.

Compression is low in cyl. 5. . .

That's not good.

What were the psi specs on all the cylinders?

Compression wasnt low, it was read wrong. Problem was the fuel injector. The end of it broke off completely

That's more like it and glad you got it fixed.
I'm happy I wasn't too far off the mark on my suggestions.
