Well I want to buy a locker but I don't want to spend all my cash on a Detroit or Arb so I wanted to get a Lockrite or an Aussie in the rear. I wanted to know how people felt about these for on and off road. Its not my daily driver but I do drive it around town and on the freeway every now and then but it is mostly my trail truck. Just starting to get some stuff for it. So I know a locker is a good start. Any ideas and tips and comments are welcomed.

Aussies work fine on and off road.

I've put about 18K miles on my 4Runner pulling DD duty with an Aussie in the rear and it's done fine. I just pulled it a couple weeks ago to fix a leak and it didn't have any noticeable wear. I'd highly recommend it. Here's pics from when I pulled it to inspect it:

I've been DD'ing and pretty heavily wheeling Aussie's for about three years now. I have them in the front and the rear and the work awesome. I don t know if you rig is manual or auto, but with my manual trans, its a little funny making sharp turns like in a parking lot. People allays ask me what wrong with my truck and why it makes funny noises when i turn.

I do think that the Aussie is a bit beefier than a LocRight though.

Awesome thank you, I do have a 5 speed. Anybody have the lockrite who can chime in as well?? So far looks like I might be going with the Aussie

I ran a lockright for a while, I actually am going back to one in my front end. I have no complaints about it. There are some minor things you will have to deal with, clicking in turns and a slight bucking if you have a 5 speed when you are coasting slowly through a tight turn like into a parking spot, but it is well worth it to have a locker.

Aren't the Lockright and Aussie the same thing just through two different companies?

I would say that you can't go wrong with either.

I know that the lockrite and Aussie are very similar products. I've heard that the Aussies are a little tougher though, less prone to the ratchet teeth wearing out and slipping. The main weakness when using this type of locker is the stock carrier. But unless your running dual crawlers or 36"+ tires you shouldn't have problems. The nice thing is that you can install it your self without having to know how to set up gears.

I had a lockrite in my 4Runner for a year or so before I sold it and I never had any problems. After a while once you re-learn how to drive, you dont even notice it. You just cant do a U-turn unless you in neutral/clutch in.

I can u-turn in gear no problem. You just have to give it a little throttle to keep the truck from bucking.

Also you must keep a spare of equal diameter. I had to run on the freeway for a ways once with a 33" and a 31". Either had to be on the gas or coasting in gear. It was terrible.
One more tip; if you have a ratchet locker up front don't try driving in front wheel only. I had to once and it was nearly impossible to keep in one lane, and absolutely impossible to go around a corner. I guess if your a pro bull rider you might be able to hang on.

go Aussie...the list of broken units is WAY shorter than with a lockrite.

OF COURSE there have been less broken Aussies, more people run lock-rights. What I want to know is a PERCENTAGE. Since that is information we will never get IMO, just pick one and run it, you will be happy either way.
