After much shopping and driving for a car that would suit Claire's needs for a little more space than her Civic and much better foul weather performance (we'll be relocting) we settled in on a 2008 Saturn View. We drove the Rav4, CRV, Hyundai, Tibeca, and a few others.

The Rav4 was fast, real fast. In fact it was putting so much power to the ground through the front wheels that the resulting torque steer scare Claire and turned her off. I'm sure the AWD model would not have done that but they didn't have one on the lot. Also, she didn't like the swing out tail gate. It's rather expensive. It's better off road characteristics were not a requirement since we have the 4runner for that.

The CRV felt like a tin can on wheels powered by a motorcycle engine. It's terribly anemic requiring you to mash the pedal to get it to go. I hated it. She kinda liked but but thankfully not as much as the others. This is good since we can get good deals through her uncle who runs a service department at a Honda dealer. It does get goof fuel economy though.

The rest... never mind the bullocks... they weren't really on the map. There were luxury models that were too expensive, or that Tribeca with it's odd interior...

The Saturn was a good mix of numerous qualities. The XR AWD with the 3.6L "High Feature" V6 is fast. Gobs of torque are available across the RPM band (variable valve timing). It has a high flow exhaust which lets it rev. The Rav is faster but the Saturn can scoot. The interior is the best of the lot. The option list is good and it's very affordable. I also get discounts through GM which added to the good price. We got the XR nicely loaded with lots of winter friendly features like remote start and heated seats. I like to drive it which was not a requirement but makes me happy.

Here it is at the dealer...

very nice frank! congrats on the new car claire!

that looks much better than the previous gen! i like it alot!

should be a great car. the more and more i think about it i think my next new car purchase might be a US manufacture, esp if they start bringing eurospec cars our way, like the focus, astra, etc.

I think this is the best Gen so far for the Vue!
Congrats on the purchase!
Hope you enjoy!

So when do we take her wheeling :hillbill: TDS is right around the corner.

J/K nice buy though. Do these new AWD things usually come with any kind of limited slip on them. I guess it would be useful if you encounter ice or that snow stuff (which we never see here anyway).

In a way yes. The rear wheels are driven by a viscous coupler which is common. Some vehicles like the Escape and I believe Rav4 can lock that couple to emulate a real 4x4. Oddly since they all use a power take off from on the front wheels they are actually 3WD.

However, none of that really matters with the traction control system. In the event of general wheel spin like when taking off from a light, and spin is first detected the engine backs off the timing and fuel. If that doesn't work the brakes, ABS to be exact, intervenes to transfer torque to the wheels with traction. In the event the car is exhibiting a loss of control, yaw compensation kicks in, again with the ABS mostly, to try to correct.

It's a rather idiot proof system but if some lead footed person with no snow driving sense just keeps the pedal down and drives like an idiot long enough heat will build up to the point the traction control shuts down until things cool down.

You can disable the traction control in situations where wheel spin is... um... desired. :D

Thats pretty cool. Will sure make driving in foul weather conditions much more pleasant. The only yaw sensor in my truck is me when I feel it starting to crab walk. :D
