Some of you know that last summer I decided to train for a triathlon - part health benefits, part wanting to be able to conquer something since losing my dad 2 years ago. Anyway, as of late I've been getting in to the habit of checking manufacturer/vendor websites for sponsorship opportunities when looking for bike/swim/run products. Monday I was looking on a site, and I was directed to a page called sponsorhouse.com . Its sort of like a monster/careerbuilder type page, where you enter your sports and stuff and they tell you what vendors would possibly sponsor you.

I sent out 3 requests, and actually got a reply back on one today. You bike guys may know of Rudy Project - www.rudyprojectusa.com - they make eyewear and bike helmets. My sponsorship consists of a discount ranging from 35-50% depending on the item. Its perfect for me - I'm no pro so a discount is really all I could ask for. That can be as good as it gets, even for pros when smaller companies sponsor you.

Awesome news Tom! When's your first event? I've got a buddy that's prepping for one in FL in the coming weeks :)

thanks Lance!
Well my first event is actually this weekend; its a super short indoor tri that's really just for charity. 300m swim, 7 mi bike and 3 mi run. The big one I'm prepping for is in June, but I'll have some road runs and a sprint tri in there before it.

Congratulations!

I am always impressed with both the freedom some are generous and the occassional great pains it takes to get people to open their pockets.

Out here we call it Pro Deals, usually with outdoor bear at half off. They aren't giving it out for free, but at half off, there is some stuff I can afford to be hard on. They get feedback, we get good gear.

Thanks guys! Its probably more of a marketing gimmick anyway, I mean why else would they sponsor a 30-something guy that's never done a triathlon before? Either way i'm happy to have a discount!
