I'm fabricating a bolt-on carrier for one of my custom bumpers.

Here's the progress so far.....

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7206.jpg

The short leg will hold the 2 fuel cans and the long leg will have the spare tire and hi-lift jack.

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7208.jpg

One of the pivot points, I'm using graphite impregnated delrin bushings.

The whole assembly will simply slip over the hitch assembly and shackle hanger mounts. 3 bolts will lock it down. I still need to add a few more braces, but it does mount solid.

The reason I made one leg longer than the other is the type of latch assembly I plan to mount. The hitch would have been in the way, besides this also give a bit more room for the tire as well.

Nice work Bruce - good to see a double shear design on there.

Looks great Bruce. Cannot wait to see how it all works out.

Will we loose the use of our shackles with this or just use the shackle pins to bolt it on?

A while back I promised Joyce I'd build her a tire carrier. I had many factors to consider, she wanted to carry a hi-lift, and 2 spare fuel cans as well. Ideally a system that wasn't too heavy and easily bolted on. By going with a double swing out design it spreads the weight better and opens the system to be more modular. I can easily add mounts for a table that can go between the swing out or a system to extend the back platform, giving more space when sleeping in the back.

As for the shackle hangers, on this design it takes away their usage, but Joyce has one of those hitch mounted shackle pins so she didn't mind getting it mounted this way. I could easily drill a hole through the 2x4 and sleeve it, instead, but Joyce had already gotten her bumper powder coated, so I was trying to avoid doing any modifications to it.

Bruce is finally making my tire carrier

Bob, all is going well :). I'm leaving for Utah with Mark (expat) and JohnD from toyota120 for a 10 day trip on the 21st. Mark took this video on Sunday http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/expatozzie/Hungry%20Valley/?action=view&current=HungryValley016.flv

Party at Bruce's place Saturday to watch him working :hillbill:

(Maybe not, less partying = more work ;) )

fabricated the latching assembly..... even with both swung out, it is quite sturdy, note there are no mounting bolts holding it in place :D

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7211.jpg

This is with the 2 fuel cans base plate and riser for the tire carrier attached. I wanted to use a different type of latching system, but Joyce wanted a user friendly set-up.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7217.jpg

The plates overlap and when closed it is very solid
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7218.jpg
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7220.jpg

Above the latch, I'll drill a hole for a padlock. Added the round tube where the tire mounts, so it's easier to hoist into place. Now it will be a simple task to line up the bolt holes.....

http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7223.jpg

Tomorrow I'll finish adding all the bracing, build the fuel can box and hi-lift mounts.... then sand and paint.....

Looking good so far. Try to snap some shots of the mounts. What's your wall thickness on the mild steel? With those bushings - does that negate the need for a greasable bolt instead? And what's the lb. capacity on the hinge itself? Thanks for sharing.

wall thickness is 1/4"

The bushings are graphie impregnated delrin, no lubrication needed.
The hinge is made from a machined DOM outer tubing, that the bushings fit in and a DOM inner sleeve. The bolt is 1/2" fine thread grade F911. As for the lb. capacity of the hinge, I have no clue, but it's quite high, since it was designed to be the bushing set-up for lower links on race trucks.

Wow...really nice bruce. I like that double hinged setup.

Finished the fuel can carrier and added bracing to the tire carrier. Ran out of gas for the welder so I'll have to complete the rest during the week.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7224.jpg

I intentionally didn't add a diagonal support on the left side of the tire carrier, I plan to attach the Hi-lift there. The mounts will bolt the jack solid, so it will act as the additional brace.
http://bruce.calrockx.com/images/carrier7225.jpg

The cans can only be removed from the inside, so when latched and locked they are safe from would-be-theives.

Man that looks good, wish I could weld like that. Really like the gas can holder, I may borrow some from that design.

I'm doing something very similar and am planning on using Dom inside Dom with teflon bushings and some all thread holding it together or possibly just a bolt. Curious if you are worried at all about theft from unbolting the hinge or have a way to combat that I missed.

Great Job!

Very cool! One question though, is the gas can capable of "tipping" back against the rig if you hit the breaks hard enough? Example: Hit the brake, hear a clunk against the back as the full can slams against the back gate.

Just wondered.

Joyce is gonna order a FJ-40 license plate holder for me to install, but for now zip ties will do...

BTW thanks for all the complements.... now I need to build another for myself!

This is my first carrier I built, but made a few changes to it since backing into a boulder on the Rubicon. I relocated the HiLift jack, placing it closer in and lower.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/9/web/765000-765999/765340_207_full.jpg
I had it up underneath the tire but it stuck out a bit far. In Big Bear it actually snagged a tree branch and bent the jack.

Argg... I really need one of these. ;)

It would free up so much darn space!

Would it be possible to make a swing-out carrier which mounted into the reciever hitch, and also have supports which bolted to the frame?
