Well,
Stepdad got a letter from Toyota about a Recall to his specific Year and model Runner.
While I can not find the letter at the moment, he mentioned to me that it had something to do with the steering linkage and some part failing which would ultimately make it so you can't steer the vehicle anymore.
He has a 2002 4Runner Sport Edition 4x4
He is taking it to get fixed, but I thought I would give the Toyota world a heads up on the issue and see if anyone else has had this problem already or has also received a letter from Toyota about it.
Now if Toyota would only issue a recall for the transmission, Then I would be a little bit happier...

You know what I think that may be it.
Cause I remember him mentioning that the letter said something about the ball joints being scratched at the factory before going in.

I took my VIN in to the dealer and was told that mine did not have the lower ball joint recall. I wonder how some could and some not. Are the joints diff based on which trim pkg or is it just that they can track the lot/batch #'s close enough to tell which specific vehicles are effected?
Good web site 4lowlocked.

Eric,
I believe it was just a 2002 Sports Edition Issue.
And I believe how you described it is how they do figure out which vehicles have the issue.
yeah it was only the 02's.
i had an 01 but i went to my dealer and acted freaked out like id read it on the internet and they replaced them under that tsb

The web site that 4lowlocked posted did show that 01's had the recall also. The first search I did I used the 4Runner option, which did not have the recall. Then I used the 4 Runner option on the pull down menu and then the recall showed up.
Hmmmmm...

iirc, it was only the very end of the 01's.. so its not all 01's. mine was technically not covered but they did it anyway :)
