Okay,
I have search here and google,
and am still utterly confused
and wish we could have make a wiki or something for this.

Lets talk backspacing.
I know the stock backspacing for the stock rims on Toyota,
I have read it 1000 times it seems through the search function here.

What I want to know. As numbers go lower, say 4", 3.75", etc, do the tires stick out more from the vehicle or do they go in more?

The opportunity to buy rims for cheap is coming up more and more but I have been holding off due to my lack of knowledge on backspacing.

So this inquiring mind would love the help of everyone here on UT to help

Thanks in advance everyone!

I imagine, if you googled then you read this.

From what I gathered, less backspacing makes your rim stick out more. Its early and I could be wrong.

Good luck Avy

Yeah I did see that link.
I presume you are right that less Backspacing means more space away from the truck.

Avy - the backspacing number is basically the measurement from the back of the "face" of the rim (the part that contacts the hub) to the inboard side of the rim, so from the back of the face to the inside lip of the rim is the backspacing.

0" backspacing would mean all of your rim would be OUTBOARD of the face. Those would be super deep dish rims, and look like a mexican frog truck. The larger the number, the more rim tucked inboard of the face, and the smaller the number the more rim outboard of the face.

So I would want a smaller number so that the tire sticks out more away from the UCA and such for rubbing issues?

Exactly. Don't go too much!

I was thinking 4" or 3.75" Nothing more than that

smaller means less rim towards the UCA's correct.

Well thank you gentlemen for your time and explanation :-)
Now on to a new thread to post me most recent issue...

Smaller means less rubbing on the UCA, and MORE rubbing on the fender. If you get out too far, get out the sawzall.

this is a very good point. whereas now if you STUFF a wheel, it fits inside the fender, but if you get very much less backspacing, when it stuffs upward, it will hit the fender lip, and no longer tuck insdie the wheelwell, you have to find a happy medium.

Is 4.25" backspacing good?
IIRC stock is 4.75 (I think I just opened up a can of arguing).

The reason I ask is because I can get a deal on a set of 4 Mickey Tompson Classic II rims 16x8 for 250 dollars local from a guy that have less then 1000 miles on them.

I figured with these and a set of Sonoran Shaved a-arms I should be good to run 315s eventually right?

Again thank you in advance!

as far as i know, stock is 4 and 3/8, so 4.25 might work as it's a little less

Cool Thanks Garrett.

Looks Like I may be scoring myself some Rims Shweet!

Thanks for the help guys.

you'll be good to go with 4.25 & shaved arms on an 8" rim with 315's. the lower then #, the more they stick out.

...dont forget to regear once you go 315's!

That is in the works, I will probably do the regear this winter.
These MT will get getting an off-road tire and will only go on when I hit the Trails, I will use my stock Rims with an HT tire for normal driving.

less backspace (rim sticking out more) also means that when you turn, the tire has to travel a wider arc . . . and could get closer to the front or rear of the fender opening. Also, when you go with a taller tire, you might consider less backspace to maintain the scrub radius (see Alignment 101 sticky)

yeah, 1/2" is nothing really, you'll be fine. I just thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents for anyone else who's reading.

Greatly appreciated,
I know at least for me this issue was always mind numbing.
So now i need to call up this guy an get on this deal, Anyone on want to spot me $50?
Thats the amount I am shy, (And I have borrowed enough money from mom since I went out of work but will be starting soon lol)
Just kidding of course.
Thanks again everyone!

3.375 in backspacing would be beneficial to stability, then? The wider arc, the bigger track it has...a plus for a lifted truck, as far as my understanding goes.

On the other hand, if it sticks out far too much, the tires can push into the fender? Just to give an idea of what I'm talking about - I'm currently running 265/70/16 and the most I'm likely to go to are 265/75/16s. I'll have the SS 1.2 lift in a few months and I'm looking at the Mickey Thompson 368412 (3.375 back-space, 16x8). However, I just noticed the Wheeler's Offroad ProComp offering, 16x8 with 4" backspace http://www.wheelersoffroad.com/4runnertoyblackalloys.htm and I'm wondering if there's a large difference between the two and if I've got the right idea about this backspacing shebang.

I have the equivalent of your SS 1.2 lift sitting right next to me begging me to be put on.
(Old SS 1.51 lift)
I would like to run 285/75/16.
I will be getting shave SS A-Arms eventually to help with the rubbing issue.
I hear a 4" BS with the Shaved a-arms or any aftermarket a-arm helps with the rubbing issue.
