My 8 year old is going in for routine surgery tomorrow. He has an inguinal hernia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inguinal_hernia) that is being corrected.
This was diagnosed back in January, but was not critical that it be repaired right away, so we scheduled it between basketball and baseball seasons.
Shouldn't be any big deal, but we're nervous just the same.
Thanks all!!

We'll keep him in our prayers. I had one of those hernias and surgery. I wish it would have been discovered and fixed when I was 8, instead I found out about it in the middle of Marine bootcamp. :( Yeah, that wasn't fun, but the surgery and recovery was not that bad. I'm sure he'll bounce back quick like all kids do. :D

Prayers out to you.
I had the same exact surgery back in Jan of 06.
Its really a simple thing, they put you under, fix you, you wake up get some meds and then have to relax in bed for a week, and wait a month before you can do anything serious.
That hardest part for me, was the week in bed, I had just gotten Tess back in November and was itching to drive her, So sitting in the living room looking outside at her sitting in the driveway didn't help much.
Rent lots of movies, and video games, and you shall be good!
And like Chris said, he will probably bounce back quick!

Had it when i was a kid.
Had the surgery, spent the night, got lots of ice cream.
Never have figured out why i got ice cream. always thought that was for when you had your tonsils removed.
He should do fine.
watch out for the "i just had surgery and i need a ....." ploy.

You sissy. :flipoff: A week in bed? I had mine at 30 and I stayed in bed to sleep the rest of the day and was back at work the next day, although walking slowly. :D
My oldest had the surgery when he was 2 and it always makes a parent nervous when it is your child. I know what you are going through Mike. Prayers up.

I was just following doctors orders,
I guess his reasoning was I could have gotten into and accident and ripped the stitches.

Thinking of your family and the kiddo. I hate surgery, but usually feel a whole heap better afterwards.
Good luck!

Hope everything works out well. For some reason I had the same surgery when I was an infant. I've got a little scar. I didn't realize it was so common. I wonder why I got it so young?

Y'all have ours. Mrs Fuster says it's a fairly simple proceedure. Not much of a risk at all. I'd be nervous too though. Give your youngster our best!

I just had mine corrected about 6 months ago. It's not that bad as long as you follow the doctors orders and don't do anything that's going to strain it. It's also a good time to when they are coming out off the sleep medicine to ask them questions because they won't remember what they say (personal experience unfortunately :chair:).
Even after 6 months if I over do it the area hurts. I was walking around the first day but slept alot for about 3 days. If the doctors give him a pain ball that distributes medicine every so often it doesn't work and makes it a little painfully to (got sick of mine and pull the cathode out after two and half days and could move a lot better).

Best wishes Mike...between ear tubes and blcked tear ducts, our kids have had more surgeries before they were 2 than my wife and I have had all together. Not nearly as invasive as what your son is having, but I know what you're feeling!

Thanks everyone!
I'm glad to report that everything went fine. Arrived at 7:30am and was leaving the hospital at 1:00pm. Tough little fella refused the pain meds in recovery - although I think the general anesthesia was still in effect somewhat. It's now 4:00pm and he's starting to feel it a little bit he said - kind of walking a little hunched over.
Doc prescribed some Tylenol/Codeine cocktail - so in case he wants it, it's available. No rough stuff or strenuous physical activity for 3 weeks - no swimming either, which means he misses an indoor pool party for a buddy of his (haven't broken the news to him yet, but we told him before that might be a possibility)
I took some pics of my brave little trooper - I'll throw them up a little later.
