Finally got this project completed yesterday :D What was previously a 97 Limited 2wd 4runner is now 4wd using all OEM parts. On with the pics:

A340F tranny out of a 98 Tacoma waiting to be cleaned:

Removed the inspection plate to access the 6 bolts on the flex plate:

Only way to access those bolts is to crank the crankshaft pulley:

Replacing the torque converter due to a broken stator using a remanufactured one:

Cutout for the shifter:

I also had to swap out the 4x2 ECU for the 4x4 ECU because the shift points were different.

Wow nice job. The underside of your truck looks like a brand new truck!!

Is that bud-built crossmember holding up the tansmission or transfer case?

Also, how hard was it to drop your tranny?

The diff is just stock ADD open...no plans on a locker yet.

The the 4wd shifter is from a FJ Cruiser.

The transmission crossmember is from Budbuilt....brand new....got it before the other guy posted his for sale.

Now I'm ready for Pismo

Very cool. I will be doing an auto to manual swap eventually.

By the way, didn't you have Ivan Stewart rims before? Those were sweet.

Had to sell the Ivan Stewart wheels because they won't fit with the manual hubs :chair:.

You have any shots of your Volks?

Tried posting pics, but the pixel quality/restriction on this forum is poor. Links to pics:

The wheels are blurry in every picture. Compare that to the linked pics. Perhaps photobucket has a problem hosting - BUT, I never had this problem on any other forum.

We do try to keep the photos to a relatively small max size in the threads to hold down on load times and other issues. They are pretty clear in the pic in your sig.

so if you dont mind me asking about how much did this run you? do you have to change trannys if you have a 2wd 4runner and want to make it 4wd?

iceman601

I think it was around $1500 or so with all the little parts added up.

There are 3 ways you can go about to tackle this.
1. Inchworm adapter and keep your stock tranny http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7369718
2. Swap out the A340E to A340F tranny
3. If you know someone with a tranny shop....Keep the A340E and swap out the main output shaft
