Hi
1st post here. My wife has a 1999 Toyota 4Runner as her DD. Recently the drivers side back door won't open. I did a search and followed a post by Bob I think. I took the panel off with the door still closed and I found everything intact. The point where everything connects was rusty, so I sprayed it with PB Blaster and worked the cam back and forth until everything loosened up. I opened and closed the door several times and it seemed to work well. I put everything back together and closed the door. Locked the doors with my remote and came in to watch the race. Just went out to get something, unlocked the doors and the door wont open again. All the buttons go up and down and moving the button manually doesn't help.

Please tell me what I am missing. Is there something else broken here. I am not going to take it apart again until I get a clue. Thanks in advance as always.

so both the inside and outside handles dont operate the door? how did you get the door open?

Once I got the door panel off I was able to take a screwdriver and move the rusty cam connection inside the door and pop it open. Cleaned and lubed everything and it was working until I locked it with my remote keyfob, then it wouldn't open again. Sorry if I was unclear.
Thanks

my advise: spray the hell out of that rusty cam with PB blaster, maybe a good spray every 20 or so mins, for a few hours, then at least twice a day there after, it should loosen up. maybe take a soft wire brush to the exterior of those parts to clean them as best as possible.

i havent had this problem at all, but thats how i would proceed without replacing the mechanism.

when you lift the exterior handle, does it feel like it does when it is locked, or is there more resistance like it is actually opening the latch? that could help in diagnosing this as either a lock problem or a latch problem

It sounds like you fixed the problem but you just need to clean it up really well.
