My clutch pedal bushing had broken off a while back. Just didn't have time to replace it till now. I'd read Bob's awesome write up on doing this but didn't want to go into the engine bay to remove things. So after staring at the pedal assembly for a while I took a different approach. This approach seems pretty safe, just the space is limited and you have to contort yourself in that little space between the pedals and the seat. On to the pictures...

Bought this from a local hardware store

Set it up like so with an old bolt holding it in place, the hardware loop is to the right side of where pedal sits on the spring.

Pedal removed, spring held in place by this hardware.

Notice the damage metal-to-metal left behind where the bushing goes. Guess I should have done this sooner.

Leaving it like that will probably end up breaking the plastic bushing within a week so I decide to put something in that gap.

I cut a rubber grommet and it fit behind the plastic bushing, nicely.

I had removed the cover under the steering wheel and the plastic vent behind there to make room to do this. It took me about 1.5 hours to do this.

nice technique, but here's the bad news: that bushing will break sooner than you know it. the rubber bushing underneath you put there will not do anything to buffer the force of that spring from digging into the bushing and cracking that in half. my suggestion is to weld in some metal into there to the original shape of the clutch pedal U thing (where the bushing sits in or just do the Unhappy mod and get a linear spring. there should be a link to his writeup in my writeup

x2 on the linear spring. that's the approach I took when i got the truck last year with the clutch squeaking like a greasy wheel.

someone noted somewhere, they could have done without a spring at all...and i'd tend to agree. the spring i installed only retracts the pedal about 1/2-1 inch after released. because it only affected the pedal that little amount, i threw the linear spring in there and called it good. $2.50 at TrueValue! good luck with the upgrade!

Bob..I agree, I wanted to do this for now till I get a permanent solution (new pedal or like you said weld that groove). I read about the linear spring solution as well, I wanted to keep it stock for now. I even thought of not using the Toyota bushing and just using the grommet throughout the U in the pedal, I think that might squeak too much though.

I'll update this in a week or so to let you know how its holding up.
