That one has been for sale for a while now.
Nobody is going to pay $22k for a 1999 4runner just to have a diesel motor.

If i had the money i would buy it and to that dual fuel diesel/veggie oil setup.

Very clean rig.

26+ mpg, thats hard to believe, maybe in the 23-25 range.

sadly you wouldn't be able to register that vehicle in california because the transplanted engine (97) is an older engine compared to the body of the vehicle (99). the price is definitely up there.

you can easily pay the same for a completed land cruiser 80 series with a diesel swap already performed! not sure why I would want a smaller vehicle for the same price.

does look clean though... bleh!

Not everyone wants a Bigger 80 series Lance :-P

There was a 97 for sale on ebay once, limited with the locker and same engine for actually 3k more! which surprised me.

bigger is ALWAYS better! :D

plus it's an lc80!! I'd say lc80 over the 3rd gen any day (doh!)

I realize that truck is nothing special to folks outside of the U.S., but that truck is almost exactly what I would want, minus the auto trans.

If my truck were smog exempt, I would do a 1KZ swap. 26 mpg is entirely believeable. That's only 6 mpg better than what I get now and I think I've read the overseas diesel Surf with a manual trans gets 29 mpg highway.

The fuel economy is definately better, you can expect the MPG to be about 30% better with a diesel vs gas motor.

26 sure would be nice, my Tacoma gets about 16.... could be due to my size 14 foot though. :hillbill:

Easily. A guy in RS has got a 70 series cruiser turbo diesel and gets over 30 with a manual. And thats on 33's with stock gearing.

I'd also love to do a diesel swap. Good luck getting it smogged though. I can do it because I can get it registered at my folks place, where there are no emmissions requirements. I just don't have the cash.

Yes the average for a manual version overseas is 29 mpg, plus the engine puts out more ponies.....

neliconcept
04-09-2008, 04:37 PM
less ponies more torque from what ive read, but with a chip it can do more.

dieseltoys.com is probably where ill have my conversion done, i think by summer of 09, I should be set to drive it down to San Antonio to leave it. 12-13k in conversion price. Also doesnt seem to include the money back with selling my engine and and other crap.

Id go manual tranny, and of course id probably up the boost on the turbo to see what I could do.

the 1HDT found in the 80 series cruisers here can EASILY average 22~27 combined mpg. for a 5000lb all wheel drive beast...thats pretty damn good.

that runner looks clean...nice job on the conversion. i'd pay 22k for it...but for a few grand LESS, you could get a low K locked diesel 80 up here.

well i called dieseltoyz

half clips cost more now, like around 6500 instead of the 4500-5500 usual price.

guess about 15k for a full build up from them if you dont do it yourself.

also the autos for these get better mileage and are quicker due to the constant boost range or so i was told.

Im gonna check around, if possible i could do this myself over time, probably not..... but would be nice.

oh and the AVG fuel mileage on interstate with 60-65 is 30-32mpg and thats with auto.

i see no reason you couldnt do this your self? its just an engine swap, maybe a bit more involved than a traditional one, but totally doable.

While I doubt Bob's inline-6 turbo diesel would fit, surely the Mercedes 2.5L inline-5 turbo diesel would fit. They're far cheaper and much more available than the Toyota diesel, but someone would have to be the guinea pig and make some sort of bellhousing adapter. I vote for someone other than me. :hillbill:

yeah, thats what my dad has in his 85 benz, but its freakin slow as hell, even for that 3750 pound car, mine weighs a good 500 pounds more.

the prob w/ doing your own diesel conversion is that in the republic of kalifornia the motor swap still has to conform to BAR standards.

1. donor motor has to be newer than the frame or the same year. (i.e. diesel block year=2000, vehicle year=1999-)
2. donor motor must come out of same vehicle platform (donor car can't be a sports car when you want to put it in your suv)
3. i don't rem the last one. but yeah... it sucks!

the only good side w/ diesels at this time is you don't have to smog it. They are proposing to change that so that you need to smog diesels... damn foolios!

looks tempting but I'm wondering what the legality is on the heart transplant with the CA BAR. I could be wrong but I thought you couldn't install this diesel because the engine itself was not available here in CA. Again I'm not sure but if you're considering it you might want to confirm that before hand.

Otherwise looks like fun :)

paddlenbike
04-18-2008, 02:52 PM
Correct. Can't put a diesel engine in a gasoline-VIN'd vehicle. If it was legal, I would have a 1KZ-TE.

There is a loophole as far as I can see. Buy a diesel car and for right now, you could drop whatever you want into it. Diesels are not currently inspected. That is subject to change, and very soon.

Is that just for CA, or the entire US?

Ken I'm not sure about that either.

From what I recall you can put a diesel in. But you have to conform to the following:

Donor diesel engine year must be same or newer that your vehicle
Donor diesel engine class must be the same as your vehicle (i.e. car diesel engine into a car. you can't have a truck diesel engine dropped into a geo metro)
Donor diesel engine must be available as a viable engine sold in existing vehicles (i.e. you can't just drop in an out of country diesel just because it's diesel. it has to be available here first).

These are CA BAR rules from how I interpret it based on the research I did last year when I was considering buying an LC80 and do a diesel swap. the biggest problem with CA is that we didn't have a lot of diesels available to begin with so the #3 restriction really limits what we can do. The good news is that VW and MB are churning out diesels now so we should be able to swipe one of those into our 4runner :) A V12 TDI would be pimp! though I'd rather get a MB diesel engine but I'm not gonna be picky if it just falls in my lap preinstalled in my 4runner :D

Right now this applies to CA, but many states are planning to adopt CA's emissions requirements. I know the state of Washington is on that list.

My guess is they're still two years out, at least. The wheels of bureaucracy move slowly.
