Hey all,
So a group of us are flying into Salt Lake City and driving up to just east of Glacier N.P. in Montana. On the way up, we thought we would swing by Yellowstone since it looks like it is on the way. Our flight comes in at 10:45 on May 9th, so we have all of that day to get to Yellowstone, or just outside of one of the main entrances. We are thinking about staying in Jackson Hole on the night of the 9th, and driving up to Yellowston and then on to Glacier on the 10th.
I've been looking at google maps, and there seems to be several different ways to get to Jackson Hole. Some of the various routes look to be about the same amount of time, but I figured I'd check with the folks that live around there to determine which route is the quickest or best route to take.
1. From SLC, take I15 North to Hwy 89 North. Take Hwy 89 to Jackson Hole and stay the night there. Next day, Take 89 through Grand Tetons N.P. to south entrance of Yellowstone. Google travel time to Jackson hole is 5:18.
2. From SLC, take I15 North to route 26 East. Take route 26 East to route 31 South to route 33 North to route 22 east to Hwy 89 North. Take 89 North to Jackson Hole. Google travel time is 5:03.
3. From SLC, take I15 North to Hwy 30 East. Take Hwy 30 East to route 34 North to Hwy 89 North. Take 89 North to Jackson Hole. Google travel time is 5:12.
4. From SLC, take I15 North to Hwy 20 East. Take Hwy 20 to West Yellowstone, and stay the night there. Google travel time is 4:55. (This isn't really our favorite option, since we would not get to drive through the Grand Tetons)
Any thoughts of which route may be best? Is there anywhere we may be able to stay north of the Grand Tetons (that is reasonably priced)? With the way our time is looking, If we found some place north of Grand Teton, we could drive from SLC to just north of the Grand Tetons and stay the night just before the south entrance to Yellowstone. This would add more travel time on the 9th, but give us more time in Yellowstone on the 10th.
For some of the folks going, it will be the first experiance out West. So while we are under time constraints, we would really like to take a route that would give us a wide variety of scenery.
Thanks all! :D
