Thats right. Sold it this morning. Picked the dude up at the Bakersfield airport, payed off the loan, signed over the title, and off he went to Utah. Within a couple hours i was in my new ride. I have definitely had some really good times wheeling and it was cool meeting a lot of new people. Someday i might buy another rig, but it will be a while. I gotta say that i am really stoked to be in a car again. Im just a car person, what can i say? i will still be around from time to time and hell, I might even bum a ride with Charles or Gabe and go out for some trails. We'll see. Alright guys, heres a couple pics.

The new ride

The new ride is a 2004 VW Jetta GLI with the 1.8t engine. Completely stock, Recaro seats, 18" BBS wheels, Eibach/Bilstein suspension. Its a cool car. I have some plans for it, nothing crazy, but it will be quite a bit faster when im done. KBB retail value is just over 19k. I got it for 13.5k. I scored for sure.

Utah huh? Maybe I'll see it around town, although I'll only be here for another week. The new ride's sweet though, and dang you got a steal on it... For some reason recently I've really been wanting to be in a car, but I want the truck too haha.
Good luck with everything and I hope you find your way back to wheeling someday.

I have already been thinking that. Haha. Had it out there before when i had the offroad setup with 31's, but i sold those and now just rock the 20's. It would do just fine though as long as i stayed off the real soft shit. Who knows though. If i come across an offroad setup for a good price, I just may pick it up and get out on some trails with the Touareg.

congratz on the sale. I'm surprised you didn't pick up an Audi but then again the VW is a sister mfg so I shouldn't that surprised. How's the quality build on those Jettas? I've been eying one of those in a diesel form but since they're made in Mexico I've been a bit concerned. Doubt that I'll buy one since I'm also eying a MB but since you're an Audi/VW gear head I thought I'd get your 2 cents :)

I was going to go with another Audi, but i figured this would make a better daily for different reasons. Slightly better mpg, less maintenance (fwd vs. awd), and i would rather save the Audi for when its time to buy another weekend toy that sits in the garage. As far as the build quality goes, everything seems good. My old Audi seemed to be built better though. But thats to be expected. I cant complain about the quality of the Jetta though, its good. I think the build quality is more based upon the model and how much the car costs. My Touareg is damn solid. Thats a 40k car compared to the 25k the Jetta cost though. The diesels get crazy good mpg. That would have been nice. A couple reasons i didnt go with the TDI. First, i dont know dick about that engine. I wouldnt know where to start if i need to work on it. Sure, i could learn, but eh. Second, with selling my Gixxer i wanted something more performance oriented. The 1.8t is highly moddable and packs a big punch. I wanted something that i can have fun in. The 1.8t is the same engine that was in the Audi. I know that engine very well.

Hey X, sorry to see your 4Runner is gone, hope it went to a good home. Good looking Jetta, I have heard the german-manufactured ones are very good. I was very close to getting an '05 TDI before I got the 3rd gen 4Runner instead, they are very nice.
I had a quick question for ya- I'm going to be getting new tires very soon, and I will need new rims too... I'm thinking about getting a set of stock take-off 17"x7.5" FJ rims with 285x70r17's. I'm wondering what your opinion of the rims was. Did you still have sufficient sidewall to air down off road (specifically in sand)? Did you have to run wheel spacers or anything with the FJ rims? Just curious...

The FJ setup was awesome with plenty of sidewall. I had them aired down to 14psi at the dunes and i jumped the hell out of the truck. Plenty of rock crawling also, and they were good to go. However, i did run spidertrax spacers front and rear. Thats the only way to do it if you ask me.

What size spacers did you run? 1 1/2 inch?
EDIT: Looking at pictures of your rig, I can see why you ran spacers since your '01 sport had some pretty big fender flares on it. However on my '98 4runner, my "little" flares are probably an solid inch smaller than yours. I might try without spacers first, and be ready to pull the trigger on half inch spacers if I don't like the look... When I go long travel the fender flares are getting sold anyway.

So according to TundraSolutions (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tires-and-wheels/126563-toyota-rim-backspacing/), the 17" FJ rims have 4 7/8" backspace, which means I'll need 1/4" spacers to "equal" the backspace I have right now with the 5-spoke alloys. That would put the outside of the FJ rims half an inch wider than what I have right now, which I'm thinking should be perfect. I need to run at least 1/4" spacers to make sure the inside of the tire doesn't hit the upper control arms, since I'd say I only have about 1/2" between the tire and the upper control arm on my setup right now...

the 17" fj wheels should be 17x7.5 instead of 7"

Yup, 17"x7.5". I basically need to upgrade because the 5-spoke alloys I have right now are not on the "recommended rim widths" for 285x75r16 BFG A/T's. Rather than try to fight with Discount about it, I'm going to use it as an excuse to upgrade  Happily, 7.5" is the lowest recommended width rim for 285x70r17 BFG A/T's.

Spidertrax wheel spacers ftw! They only make one size for our trucks. I would rock them if i were you. They will put the tire out a bit more, but it gives it an aggressive stance. Sh*t looks tough as hell. They are top notch in quality also.
