Does anyone know if there was a year that the 3rd gen runner came with a cabin filter? If not has anyone ever retrofitted one in?

nope, no 3rd gens had them. but that said, anything is possible. in 4th gens where are they located? are they located *after* the blower fan (between the blower and the vents)? if yes, the blower fan is beneath and behind the glove box

You have 2 vents in the rear that would need filters, with some minor fabbing it can be done. As for the fresh air vent up front, I haven't taken one apart, so I have no clue if one can be retrofitted easily.

BTW no 3rd gen had vent filters......but I wonder if the Lexus version had them?????

This is something I will be looking into. I'm getting tired of being sandblasted everytime I flip the fan onto high.

Kurt on the 4th gen we have one right behind the glove box. check there. I've swapped out my filter with the ac/heater/furnice filtration system (3M) from Home Depot. I had to do a bit of cutting to make it fit but it works.

The filter is one of those cut to fit your application so it comes with a black plastic mesh (checkered piece - 36"x36") and the filters (green and black). I used this to make it work for 3 of my filters (behind glove box and two filters in the rear that Bruce mentioned). this helped reduce my "dust" factor that you experience. It doesn't prevent 100% of the dust but it's much better than stock.

Thanks for the info, I'll take a peak this weekend.

Oh, from the little research I have done. The sequoia/tundra did not have a filter. And even the Lexus/Fj80 did not have a filter. Looks like the 4th gen 4runner was the first for the SUVs.
