View Full Version : Joshua Tree Detour... SoCal to AZ (4-29 or 4-30)

I am going to head into SoCal and pick up my wife's Jeep probably on Tuesday evening or Wednesday. Since the drive back to AZ is oh so much fun on I-10... I was thinking about throwing in a small detour though Joshua Tree heading East.

Does anyone know if it is possible to enter the park from Aqueduct Road and connect to Thermal Canyon Rd? The plan would be to make a slight detour and take Aqueduct Rd to Thermal Canyon Rd to Pinkham Canyon Rd. to Cottonwood Springs rd to I-10 and back to AZ.

Some things I am unsure of:
1.) Is it even possible?
2.) There is a high chance this will happen at night, I will most likely be solo, and want it go smoothly as it is my "break". Are these trails tame enough that the KJ (Liberty) should be able to handle it? (KJ will be equipped with M8000, lockers, sliders, skids, and is on 245/75R16's, and lights blah blah blah)
3.) Trail legalities... since the planned entrance to the park is not through an entrance would this route be possible?

Just shooting from the hip here in a way to spice up a normally boring drive home. Any advice or input is welcome, and this thought/detour might be wiped out completely. So far all thoughts are based upon Google maps... What do you guys think?

This is what vehicle SHE picked out to replace her X and I will be driving back:

most of the "trails" in Joshua Tree that I've seen are easy, though there are a few spots that have minor obstacles. So you probably shouldn't have any problem, even in a jeep :D That said I haven't seen the specific trails you're talking about, but what I did see was scenic.

If I remember correctly, there is a ranger station at Cottonwood Springs that will be happy to collect your entrance fee as you leave. I asked a ranger about that a year ago, they have no problem really with people coming in through a back entrance as long as they pay on the way out.
