View Full Version : Suspension Option, need thoughts

Ok, so here's my story. Got the PP 1" lift with my billies put on in January, and unfortunately its too stiff for my DD, and I am going to be making a change.
I originally wanted to do the OME881/906 with comfort shocks all the way around, but I have discovers that at over $600, its out of my price range. So what I have come up with is doing the Tallest '99 spring option with my current billies. I would then trim the rear cone bump stops to allow more travel in the rear.
My next thought is to also get a set of airbags for the rear for when ever I tow with this or have it loaded with stuff/people/ETC. I don't have any real experience with them, and want to see if people have any thoughts or experiences with them on the 4Runners. Do they hurt the ride at all when they are not inflated? Do they make any noise in the springs (rubbing, ETC)? Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
~Mark

depending on when your 2000 was made, it might already have had the "tall 99 springs". from your sig, it sounds like it didnt.
a properly installed airbag system should make no noise what so ever, and should not contact the coils.
as for a softer ride, im not sure the 99 springs will be any better than what you have now. it is an suv, its not going to ride like a caddy.

It was defiantly softer before I went to the PP springs. They are a stiffer progressive spring. Unfortunately it is a known thing, I just didn't do enough research before I decided to get them...

I would keep the springs but get some trekmasters.

I've installed the Airlift 1000 air bag system into a 4Runner with stock 99 springs, they made the ride so much better to the point I decided to install them into my rig. They make a huge difference when you load up for a trip or towing, but don't affect the vehicle articulation. They do ride against the coils, but that's the way they are designed. i'll get some shots of mine installed when I get a chance to play offroad...

That would be greatly appreciated. Are they quite as a mouse when you are driving though? I don't want them making any rubbing noises or something retarded like that. Thanks a bunch!

if you want the tall 99 springs, i'll swap with you. my 99 was an early one, so they're definitely the tall ones. it's a limited 4wd. i don't have a backup vehicle, so you'd have to remove the PP stuff and send it to me so i could pull mine off and send them to you... if that would work out for you.
i've had the airbags, and when i swap these coils out, i will install a set on this runner. they're great to have. they soften up the bumpstops on the rear for everyday driving when uninflated, yet when you need the extra support when towing or loaded down, you can adjust the ride to how you want it.

either ride with me or Joyce, it's her 99 that I added them to as well.
I guess you didn't see this thread on my front shocks....

Thanks for the offer, but I am going to go with new springs (unless yours are new) to help the resale value later on. This is also my DD, so I can't really be down for several days. And, someone on YotaTech beat you to the punch and PMed me last week about buying my current ones off of me. But, thanks for the offer, it is definitely appreciated.

Sorry to hyjack but i have a question or two on this subject. My 02 sport is getting a little saggy... I am wanting to replace the coils. I have talked to Steve about the SS system 3 kit. He said i need to go with a bigger kit. I tow an 18ft bass boat on occasion and an 8x10 trailer a few times a week. I really dont want the bigger lift. Would the 99coils and teckmasters do the trick or would the PP springs be better? Air bags are also interesting.. any input would be great! thanks guys

same here, I have an 18ft Ranger, with the airbags there is no sagging. I'd install the AirLift 1000's and see if that works for you......

Curious, can these Bags be installed in the LC coils that I will be running eventually?

yes, they can be installed in any spring combination, you may need to vary from the installation instructions a bit, depending on lift....

Crap, now I need to look into these.
How do the bags work at full compression? Like if you were to stuff a tire on an obstacle?

X2 on a new thread. I found the Lar's guide that mentioned earlier.

Was your setup pretty close to that?
