this 4runner is going through a significant build out so if I show you the "right now" pictures it won't matter cuz it'll be completely different in 8-12 weeks. :) Well so long as I can get some of the parts for him :D

Hey bruce the 2x4 is significantly higher on this one compared to mine. I could be wrong but it looks like it. Also the side plate (bottom) looks like you trimmed a lot of. beh then again I think it's the angle I'm looking at that's throwing it all off.

lookin good. :)

It's gonna be quite different compared to yours Lance, I was able to move the 2x4 up higher since I'm gonna plate the top instead of trying to make the stock upper plastic work. There's 1" of clearance from the hatch...

The side wings are a slighty modifed version of the one's I use on the 3rd gens and the 2x4 is a bit wider than yours as well. Mainly because of the way I plan to do the hinges for the tire carrier and have it look well too.

what is going down with it anyways as far as mods?

It'll look identical to mine but white basically. No tube front bumper like mine but the nice shrockworks bumper. It'll be nice when everything is complete. It'll take some time cuz we're still gathering parts etc.

Just need to grind the welds smooth and fabricate the tire carrier. I added the top plates and rounded the corners today. also made the hinge mounts, tomorrow I'll trim the material out to fit them...

From the back view it looks a bit wide, it's more of an optical illusion.....

Urrgg...this is painful to watch and wish for. On a white 4R none the less!

What/where are the details on those front fenders?

And yes, I do want a rear bumper Bruce LOL. You have mad fab skills.

Mark, the front fenders are identical to mine. Glassworks fenders with modifications to fit a 4runner. I removed mine so the fabber could make it fit perfectly. This is the route we had to go since Glassworks wasn't interested. But now that we've made another one I heard that Glassworks is finally working on a 4runner version but no eta or 100% confirmation. Go figure.. (doh!)

Mark, it can be done on yours too :) All ya gotta do is ask!

O yeah Mark another note, the bumper is not white though :) So technically not 100% identical to yours but pretty damn close!

LOL - all I gotta do is find the money! Like the Glassworks fenders very much.

Bruce - will the bumper be powder coated and if so, where/who?

Have you pulled back the leading edge of the bumper at the fender well line to accomodate bigger tires. My 34's rub the trailing edge of the stock fender/bumper so I had to place spacers under the bump stops to stop compression by 2" and that is still not enough.

Also, how does you design work with a body lift?

And can the owner speak up? I don't recongize this truck..I wanna know more without stealing this thread.

go here: Linkie (http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=4094.0)

Once Glassworks gets a production fender it'll add another vendor to the list of goodies for the 4th gen.

My neighbor does pc's so I'm going to see how much it'll cost to get the bumper pc'd there. if not we'll find someone else.

I made the bumper as flush to the body work to give maximum clearance in the wheelwell. Once he goes to 35's, I'll make any adjustments then. When I re-did my rear suspension, I ended up cutting over an inch off my bumper and had to massage the body work to prevent rubbing during full articulation.

I purchased all the pieces for the hinge from Kartek...

Looks like a interesting latching mechanism idea. I'd like to see some more detailed "action" shots of it (opening, closing, etc..)

http://img191.imagevenue.com/loc470/th_31645_Dave12_122_470lo.jpg (http://img191.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=31645_Dave12_122_470lo.jpg)

OK I compiled all the shots into one image, hope this explains how it works....

I welded a threaded sleeve into the 2x4 tube, screw in the rod end, install the clamp handle and it's held in place with a pull pin.

I did it this way for simplicity and when you remove the carrier, there's only a threaded hole left. If for some reason the lever flips open, no worries about having the carrier swing open.

All the parts were found at McMaster Carr......

just a little update, got too hot today! But I did get the upright for the tire mount aligned, keeping it 2" away from the hatch. reused part of the middle bumper plastic section, trimmed it to fit and then started sheeting in the rest of the bumper. Spent the rest of the time just doing all the welding.....

The way I mount the bumpers, there's no way of pulling the hitch off, the frame would be the first to give way. I'd say it's at least as strong as the factory hitch.

Nice looking bumper. I have no doubt its a strong bumper. Are you going into production ? If so what are your plans to get the bumper certified, mainly the reciever ? I have heard horror stories of fab. guys getting sued because of some unrelated accident and thier work comming into question. I don't know you or what you do, so maybe this has already been worked out. I personaly would run the bumper and tow with it, nice work

Put it this way, if you can rip the bumper off the back without tearing the frame apart, then I should be sued. The fact remains, unless I have the ability to produce the bumper in large numbers, the cost to get it certified wouldn't be worth it. A simple disclaimer, stating it's for offroad use only is all that I'm doing for now. Most likely I'd get sued for building the bumper too strong destroying the other car in an accident, because it didn't crumple and damage the 4Runner.

Hey guys & gals,

The body work was done by:
Auto Explosion
Automotive Restyling & Body Shop
13805 S. Normandie Ave
Gardena, CA 90249
(310) 329-6691

These guys are well known on the street scene and I have used them many times with great results. For what ever it is worth, I highly recommend these guys for body work! When time permits, I will give further information on my rig, but for the most part both Lance and Bruce are my main resources. They have greatly helped me build on my own ideas and they both have very generously allowed me to use so many of their ideas. If you guys & gals have any questions I highly recommend contacting the two fabrication gurus! I am sure that I did not have to make that statement because I know most of you know Lance and Bruce personally or have at least chatted with them, so I hope this helps some one that may be looking for info and have not had the pleasure of speaking with them. And thanks for the great compliments on my rig, I owe a lot to the many of you that have taken the first steps in modifying your rigs and contributing the plethora of information on this web site.

Thanks for the "in progress" pics of the rear fenders being done. That was cool to see. They did a great job matching them up with the front fenders.

How strong is the bond between the new fiberglass and the original body? Will it be able to withstand the vibration from high speed desert runs without slightly seperating and cracking the paint at the seam? I don't know much about bodywork and that is something I've always wondered about.

i ran into David at Bruce's house while having my bumper fitted, yes, his powder coating was all done include the bumper, swing door spare tire carrier, twin jerry can holder, Hi-Lift mount, etc. i think the only thing left out was the tag light which he wanted to repaint in black(it was white). he wants to have some night shoots taken but i heard he's having some problems with couple wires, there're gotta be 20 some aux. lights on his rig, so who knows how long it's gonna take to figure all out.

just be patient.
