Do you recomend that we take our bycicles to Pismo? I saw couple pictures from previous year that someone brought their bycicles with them.

10-03-2008, 07:34 AM
I wouldn't suggest bicycles, they would be a pain to ride in the sand. Although at low tide, I suppose you could ride down near the water, where the sand is more compacted.
cooldry
10-03-2008, 07:49 AM
You can ride bike in low tide. Need to air down, but just remember it's salt water. I wouldn't ride a bike you really care about. It'll really screw up your components and better wipe it down as soon as you're done or it'll rust.

*** IT'S OFFICIAL ****
i just got done paying my bills, putting money into savings (yes, I'm still trying to put money into savings even being unemployed) and "hiding" the money in different accounts for later in the month, and i still have the ~$350 I'll need for gas money. i'll have to do 60mph the whole way to conserve on mpg but oh well. I am doing laundry and getting pack today and tomorrow and i'm heading south on Tuesday...... i'll figure out the rest once i get to CA, but i think i'll just end up driving the whole way, i have too much camping gear and crap not to bring my own truck. i'll just have to pay for the camping spot.
I'll see ya'll in the sand on friday!!!

For those going to caravan with Jenn Justin, Sean, and I, we will have to follow the motor home at like 55 miles an hour unless you all can come help us fix the front suspension.
The front passenger air bag has a leak in it and we need to pull it out to patch it...
I mean it can be driven with out but if we can fix it we can go a little faster lol

Chris,
I found out I have to meet the trailer guy at 12pm at the ranger station entrance, will anyone be at the camp site? Guess I have to push up my time schedule with things to do to prepare. He said I have to be on site to pay the camp site fees and to show him where to setup the trailer.
Do I need a another camping permit for the trailer? Or is the one I have for my Runner enough?
Thanks
slosurfer
10-05-2008, 11:10 PM
Masa, I'll try to be there, but that might be in between my first and second trip taking stuff out there. I will for sure have the camp area set up prior to then and should be able to give you a good description of where to park it.
I'm going out there first thing in the morning to set up the camp and may have to run home to get my camping stuff. I'll be sure to be in touch with you and let you know what is going on.
Your camping pass should also cover the trailer as it is good for a vehicle and one legally towed vehicle/trailer.

Hey Chris, I was thinking about maybe doing some clamming since it is Pismo. Do you know if it's okay to catch clams where we'll be. Also, are there any clams there. I've heard it isn't what it used to be.
iceman601
10-06-2008, 01:03 PM
I was thinking about the same thing and found this:
http://www.classiccalifornia.com/clamming.htm
-salt-water fishing license required
-Clams must measure 4 1/2" in diameter
-Limit of 10 clams per person per day
slosurfer
10-06-2008, 01:12 PM
Yep, what he said. :)
If you don't have a clam fork, you may be able to rent them somewhere. I might even be able to get some from my grandpa.
I heard there aren't many out there anymore and I never see people clamming out there. They saved the otter but in turn wiped out the clams. :)
I remember going out there as a kid with my grandpa and catching our daily limits and then making homemade chowder. I hope the clams come back, because it will be sad if I can't do that with my kids. It was so much fun.
Let me know if you want me to track down a fork or two.
cooldry
10-06-2008, 01:40 PM
Cool,
If it isn't going to be too much of a hassle and it isn't going to be an inconvenience, I'd really appreciate it if you can get a fork. But if it's any trouble at all, please don't feel like you have to. I can always use a shovel.
Thanks

Low to moderate wind and NO rain expected. Might luck out and have a beautiful weekend!
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:
An intense ridge of high pressure will continue to build over
California.
Gusty northeasterly (offshore) winds, clear skies and warm
temperatures will develop along our coastline during the morning hours.
The winds will shift out of northwest (onshore) during the afternoon
hours producing cooler temperatures and even a few areas of coastal
low clouds along our northwesterly facing beaches during the late
afternoon hours. Otherwise, the rest of our area will be clear.
Note: At 6:15 a.m. the northeasterly (offshore) winds reached 17.7 mph
sustained with gusts to 39.0 mph at the Diablo Canyon
meteorological tower. As the air column descended over the Irish
Hills towards our coastal canyons, it was compressed. When air
is compress it heats up (ideal gas law). The air temperature
at Diablo Canyon reached 68.9 degrees at 6:30 a.m. while at
the same time the Paso Robles Airport was reporting only 44
degrees.
Inland temperatures will reach the high 80s while our coastal valleys
will in the low 80s. Coastal temperatures will mostly be in the 70s,
except for Avila beach and Cayucos which could reach the low 80s.
Warm sunny days and cool clear nights will continue through this week.
The storm track will remain far to the north and rain is not expected
over the next 10 days.
WINDS:
A pattern of fresh to strong (19-31 mph) northwesterly winds
during the afternoon hours, decreasing during the evening hours
and shifting out of the northeast (offshore) during the morning
hours will develop today and will continue through Thursday.
The northwesterly winds will gradually decrease on Friday.
Gentle to moderate (8-18 mph) northeasterly (offshore) winds
are expected over the weekend.

See if this comes out legible. You’ll need tide info for clamming right?
Tides:
Low Tide High Tide
AM PM AM PM
9 Thursday 1:02 0.5 1:04 2.7 8:00 4.1 6:39 4.6
10 Friday 1:37 0.4 1:47 2.2 8:18 4.4 7:31 4.8

12 Sunday 2:37 0.6 3:07 0.9 8:57 5.1 9:07 4.8
It's been awhile since I've visited the beach frequently, but I have never seen anyone clamming the 4x4 area. But I was mostly an evening beach goer. Now shore fishing.. Always lots of people fishing.
As stated, you will need a saltwater fishing license to clam.

As a kid we used to do it along the 4wd section, but maybe now they just do it between pier ave and grand ave entrances. I don't think you are allowed to do anything past where the dunes are closed at the south side, but I could be wrong about that.

I know there is a bait shop on the Pismo Pier. Other than that, probably even the local grocery stores have bait. A quick google search only turned up the pier one, Port San LUis, and Virgis Fishing in Morro Bay. Local yellow pages, the same. :headscratch:
You should call the ranger station tomorrow and see what they suggest. They might even know what's working and what they are catching now.

It was cold last night. (Although Very hot during the day..)
(Report from today, 10/9/08)
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:
A major change in the weather is underway as a cold low plunges
southeastward into southern Nevada on Friday, and in combination with
as intense eastern Pacific high will produce moderate gale to fresh gale
force (32-46 mph with gust to 50 mph) northwesterly winds along our
coastline today through Friday.
The marine influence along with cold air aloft will give much cooler
temperatures throughout our area today, in fact as much as 30 degrees
cooler from yesterday's highs. Areas of low clouds, fog and marine
haze will develop along our coastline during the evening and morning
hours.
Both our inland and coastal valleys will only reach the 70s while our
coastal temperatures will range between the high 50s and low 60,
except for Avila beach and Cayucos which should reach the 70s.
Another northeasterly (offshore) wind event is forecast on Sunday
and Monday, giving another round of clear and warmer weather.
Still no sign yet of any rain as the storm track will remain far to
the north.
Note: Hurricane Norbert may impact Cabo San Lucas on the southern
part of the Baja California peninsula late Friday through
Sunday.
WINDS:
Moderate gale to fresh gale force (32-46 mph with gust to 50 mph)
northwesterly winds will develop along our coastline today and will
continue through Friday.
The northwesterly winds will decrease on Saturday.
Gentle to moderate (8-18 mph) northeasterly (offshore) winds
are expected on Sunday through Tuesday.

Windy!!
ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:
The low pressure system over southern Nevada is now intensifying as cold
air currently over the Pacific Northwest digs southeastward into Southern
California and Nevada.
This condition will produce moderate gale to fresh gale force (32-46 mph)
northwesterly winds along our coastline today and will give much cooler
temperatures. Areas of marine haze should develop along our coastline
during the afternoon and evening hours.
Both our inland and coastal valleys will only reach the high 60s while
our coastal temperatures will range between the high 50s and low 60,
except for Avila beach and Cayucos which should reach the 70s.
Saturday will begin on the cool side as a result of lighter early
morning winds and a cooler air mass in place.
The low over Nevada will move to the east and be replaced by high
pressure on Sunday. This will produce another northeasterly (offshore)
wind event on Sunday and Monday and a Santa Ana in Southern California.
Offshore winds may become somewhat gusty on Monday and will raise
fire weather threats.
Still no sign yet of any rain as the storm track will remain far to
the north.
Note: Hurricane Norbert will impact the southern part of the Baja
California peninsula tonight through Saturday.
