well, much to my surprise my wife found and decided she wanted an old fj off craigslist today. After looking at more pictures of it I think it's a bigger basket case than my 85. 30 min later she finds this on ebay,

$8000 with free shipping to several US ports, right hand drive, diesel, looks to be in pretty nice shape overall. So... anyone have experience with a deal like this? I'm thinking since it's over 25yrs old we wouldn't have a problem bringing it in.

it being RHD will have a higher insurance cost (who knows why...).

other than that, talk to the DMV, see what they can do for you.

have you checked out Luxury Imports yet? you can get some unique vehicles through them (diesel Land Cruisers for instance), but they're up in Canada so there may be some shipping or a road trip involved

I know when you bring in JSPEC RHD cars, they have to have a VIN assigned to them, and you have to go through some legalization papers, but I dont beleive it would be to much of a problem, ask the DMV, or call some Auto Importers.

Hell if its going to be a trail rig, dont worry about any of it. Just ship it here, tow it home, and always trailer it to the trail.

My previous vehicle before the 4runner was a RHD Nissan Skyline that I imported from japan (awesome car - but frig it sucked back gas)

Now mind you, I imported into Canada under our much better importation rules. However for the US, I would check out
http://www.japanvehicles.com/newcars/FAQ.htm

and here is a link from that site
