Sorry, I'm a 4WD newbie: I'm confused about what is required to replace the rotors on my 1997 4Runner 4WD. Will I need to remove the entire hub assembly or can the rotor be replaced with the hub on the car.
Oh, and while I'm there, is there any trick to repacking the bearings? So far I haven't found a DIY for my 97 and I haven't sprung for the shop manual. Any links to share?
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to Ultimateyota
All that is blocking you from changing out the rotors are two bolts that hold the brake caliper in place. Once you have that removed it should free it up.
As for the bearings....they are non repackable....if it does require changing out, you will need a 20+ ton press and new bearings.

Thanks ICEMAN. Those are the kind of answers I like to see. There is some confusing info out there but now I know when my new rotors and pads arrive it will be a quick job.
BTW since there are a lot of folks grappling with brake questions: I'm going with Brembo rotors and top of the line Akebono ceramic pads. I'm hoping spending a little more for the parts will make me happier longer, especially since my labor cost is zero and I don't have to worry about whether the the yahoo in the service bay went to a rave the night before or simply is pissed off at his girlfriend. Time will tell if my extra parts cost will pay off.

Def on the Brembo's is a good choice.
The pads I have never heard of but I will research.
A lot of 3rd Generation Guys (96-02 4Runner) end up doing what they call the Tundra Upgrade.
This Upgrade consists of taking calipers from a 01 Tundra and bolting them on to the 4runners, with off course same year rotors and pads.
The tundra calipers are a direct bolt on fit to our 4Runners and is definitely a recommended upgrade :D

IRONMAN.
Regarding the Tundra upgrade I read where a lot of folks do this, but I am reluctant to add additional unsprung mass to the suspension. I figure the Toyota engineers spent a lot of time to optimize the suspension dynamics with the original configuration so while the Tundra upgrade no doubt has some durability plusses, there are probably some minuses somewhere in the suspension dynamics and possibly F-R brake balance. I don't wish to experiment, in spite of all the enthusiasts that swear by the switch.
As for the brake pads, here is a link: http://www.akebonobrakes.com/aftermarket/proact/ceramic_disc_pads/index.html
I bought them from stopshopanddrive.com
Thanks again for the technical help.

Well steve I would spring for a shop manual. Also I think your questions are best answered in this tech section of a friendly website.
