At work right now posting from my phone.

Like J said, what a weekend.

There will be a full report of what we did, what problems we encontered, what we did to fix them and future warning for anyone else doing this lift.

I cannot that J and Katy enough for the effort they put into helping Tess grow up a little more.

Welp, back to work!

On break now in the truck.
I don't get off till 9.

I will show you the link on Sonorans site later on the links.

Trust me I am itching to get home and tell you all the saga the Katy, J and I went through.

There was a lot of cursing and the usual blood sweat and tears.

~Avy

P.S. I am undecided on tires, I don't think I can afford the shaved a-arms till after NE takeover and I do want 285, but might have to settle for 255...

Lee
06-30-2008, 07:28 PM
you dont need to have shave a arms for 285s... i had 305s and didnt shave mine.

YotaFun

Where you still on stock rims?

JWBehm
06-30-2008, 07:31 PM
Its really close, I had to sand them down a tiny bit on my 99 4Runner with a 2.5" lift but i could fit 285s with stock rims. I would just get a .25" spacer from pep boys and longer studs if you have a problem.

I think if he goes any wider with spacers, he will be in ticket heaven where he lives. Time for the flares!

So I am showered and relaxed.
Let the saga begin.

As most of you may know I have had my lift in my possession since the beginning of October 2007.
I originally didn't think about getting the lift coated.
I was more waiting to collect the tire and rim package before I put it on.

However, when I went to See Katy and J for there wedding, and he did my Toyota emblem for my Satoshi mod in this very cool wrinkle red, and after seeing that and J throwing out the idea of doing the lift that way, I was sold!

So finally, this past weekend, I requested off from work, talked to J and made arrangements for going down, and then loaded the truck with my tool box, jack stands, various fluids and grease, and a change of cloths and the lift and prepared for my 6 hour trek to VA.

Day 1: Friday
Its 430 in the morning, I slept about 4 hours the night before cause I was so excited about this weekend.
I showered and loaded a cooler, kissed my mom goodbye and got in the truck.
Started her up and finally left the house around 530.
I had already gassed up the night before so I headed straight to the highway.
Cops where everywhere Friday so I had to take my time, however there was one point in the trip that through my playlist shuffle, East Bound and down came on and I found myself speeding up lol!
Also, half trip when I refueled, I decided to put plus in, as some of you may have known I have been getting some bad gas mileage at a steady 15mpg city and highway, well, with the plus, I jumped back up to 20mpg highway, anyone know why?
I thought on the 3.4l it really didn't matter what octane I was putting in?

Anyway, lets get to the good stuff.
I arrived at J's around 1130, got in and just sat down for a bit, 6 hours is a long drive, and that last hour felt like it took forever!
He showed me around and pointed out his new 55 gallon saltwater tank, that is freakin awesome, a work in progress, but its farther then I could ever go and heck, clown fish rule!
So then we go get the lift out of the truck to start stripping the coils, J explained to me the coating on the springs is really really hard to strip off, and I learned this quickly:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03874.jpg
That was a tundra coils, those where the hardest coils, Katy can attest to this as you will see later ;)
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03874.jpg
The LC Coils where easier, a lot easier!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03859.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03864.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03862.jpg

Then we get the the lower links striped as well as teh pan hard bar and blasted as well:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03861.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03863.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03873.jpg

Then it was time to go pick up Katy from work
She got to help us out the rest of the night:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03867.jpg
I quickly learned that she really hates doing coils, and I think at the end of the weekend, Katy, J, and I are all in agreement COILS STINK!
See, she looks really mad here lol:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03871.jpg

I told them, if I was a girl, and they couldn't have kids, I would bare kids for them, cause I can not thank them enough.

So finally after the rear components were completely clean and blasted, J started to coat them and I gotta say I LOVE that wrinkle red.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03868.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03869.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03877.jpg

Since it was around 10PM now, we decided to call it a night, had some pizza and I for the first time finally saw "A house of a 1000 corpses"

I slept on the sofa, it was great, and again, thank you Katy and J!

Day 2: Saturday
Started off at 9-930, had breakfast, eggs, bacon and potatoes with toast, greatest breakfast I have had in a looong time, even though J kept critiquing Katy lol.

So we pulled the truck into a lot across the street, and while Katy continued to work on stripping the tundra coils, me and J started to get the rear broken down.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03880.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03879.jpg
Oh and did I mention I HATE RUST!!!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03881.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03882.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03886.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03885.jpg

We don't have to many pics of installing the rear components cause we were all tied up.
but here is the finish product:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03887.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03888.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03905.jpg

Then we pull the truck around to get started on tearing down the front when the rain starts:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03890.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03889.jpg

Now remember how I said we hated coils? Well:
We had got compressors from J's neighbor, and if I had known they where cheapo compressors I would have just gone to Advanced down the street and got good ones.
Needless to say we got the old setup apart after Grinding:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03893.jpg
Banging in the new studs barely:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03898.jpg
And welding on cause we stripped it:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03896.jpg

After that, we went upstairs, had some chicken and corn on the cob, watch the sequel to Friday nights movie and where I feel asleep early.

Day Three: Sunday
Woke up a little later today, thinking it would be a little easier, HA, I should have knocked on wood.

We had left the compressors on one of the springs that ended up bending a wee bit.
And my mom and step dad ended up coming over to see what was going on and saving us by taking me to go get the good spring compressors.
Katy was thee girl of the hour actually getting one of the bent compressors off on her own, and trust me, J and I weren't having any luck (will be up loading a vid later to prove Katy in fact was wrenching this weekend, despite J and I trying to be all manly and doing most of the work, she was always itching to get dirty :D )

So we got the coils assembled:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03900.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03903.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03902.jpg

And then put them in:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03906.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03908.jpg

And then we tired to get started on the diff drop but it started to rain again:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03915.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03914.jpg

So We just put the tires back on and I will do the diff drop before I hit the trials at Takeover:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03917.jpg
Yes, We did it all:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/DSC03918.jpg

I don't have the energy right now to go nit picking at all the trials and such, tomorrow I will get to that tomorrow.

Again I could not thank Katy and J enough for 1) housing me 2) coating my lift 3)helping me put it one and 4) keeping me grounded.

Again more will come tomorrow

P.S. I can not run spacers here in PA, they are illegal.
Plus like J said I can't go any wider or I will get another ticket, I am already putting my stock flares back on...

Well, upon reviewing the PDF file supplied by NakSuKow, (Thank You!) I need to take my springs apart and put them back together the proper way.
I was wondering why the stud was sticking up so high...
I forgot to put the retainer and cushions under neath the top out plate.

I took off July 12th, So I will do it then...

speaking of which, where are the cushions and retainers for the front shocks?
They were not included in my package and the stock ones don't fit over...

I might have to order some I guess....

god guys, the front coils arent THAT hard!!!! even the first time i did them it wasnt that bad. and why is everyone so afraid of spring compressors?

also, i REALLY dont like assembling the struts on the vehicle like that... just personal preference, but i much rather use spring compressors than use a 4000 pound vehicle to assemble the struts.

also, i REALLY dont like assembling the struts on the vehicle like that... just personal preference, but i much rather use spring compressors than use a 4000 pound vehicle to assemble the struts.

Spring compressors are a PITA when your spring is coated a nice slick surface and it tends to slide on you every tightening turn you take. The compressors would grab onto the old coating.

Eh were just a bunch of idiots here Sean and you are much smarter than us! Maybe someday we can be like you...

YotaFun
07-02-2008, 05:00 AM
Especially if they are a cheap @$$ pair of compressors like the ones J's neighbor had.
Also positioning them just right so you can get them out once the spring is completely compressed is a PITA too.

I am not afraid of them Sean, I just hate working with them.

Ok time for my two cents!!!

1) Avy is a great guy, we had a really good time having him over for the weekend! Cant wait to see ya again man!!

2) I HATE coils.....(that one is for you Avy) :flipoff:

3) Thanks to Avy and his parents for the Pizza

4) Sorry to my Hubby for the "nut shot" it was totally unintentional, I swear

5) A sarcastic thanks to Avy for taking the worst possible pics of me and posting them on the site :chair:

But seriously, it was a great way to spend the weekend! Especially working in the rain, it was funny seeing Avy frolicking shirtless in a downpour
I havent had that much fun and frustration all at the same time in a while. And whoever said the front wasnt that difficult, i wish you would have been there so you could have shown us how "easy" it could be......actually now that i think about it.....it probably would have been easier if we had a nice set of compressors instead of the POS ones we had to deal with!!

And excuse teh crappy cell phone picks, camera died....

One, Did I do it right?
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/The%20Lift/IMG01231.jpg

And
Two, Why is one of the old studs painted and the other not, the one that is not painted was on the right, also I notice that the right lower control arm seems to be new, like it has the writing like someone pulled it from a junkyard or got it from the parts department, after 130K you would think it would be gone so that's why I think it was replaced....

Looks as though you maybe had some front end damage before and the people fixed it, and sold it! If everything is straight and you seem to have no issues out of the front end, I wouldn't worry about it. Next time you are down I'll check it out for paint lines and what not to tell you if it has been damaged before and repaired prior to you getting it.

Figured I would let the rear settle....

Is it just me or does the rear of my truck still look really raked?
Also the truck is a inch and a half higher due to body lift, and new meats are on there way by the end of the week:

mine was like this for about 6 months, but finally settled, and now im sitting level (thanks to the spare tire carrier)

do you have your spare tire installed in the stock location? that would sometimes give me up to an inch of lift in the rear.

im always using mine to carry heavy stuff: half a dozen extremely large bags of potting soil, about 50 pounds of tools (consistently) and then camping trips like mojave where i was carrying 60 pounds of water, 70 pounds of gasoline, plus all my other camping goods, and driving with that for nearly 200 miles across the desert. alot has contributed to the settling of the springs.

want to trade springs? ahhaaha

That's a crazy amount of lift. IMO even for 285's. If I decided to go to 33's I was going to try to do it with my stock '99 springs with my airbags in the back and trim packers or custom spring spacer in the front. At worst I think I would need some small wheel spacers.

Guys you have to understand I keep a good 100lbs alone back there, it takes the max payload limit of 300lbs to get the springs to start to sag.
I have towed my GTI still no lean,
I have towed a loaded trailer with the max 300lb in the truck.
I don't know how much more it can settle.

I have jumped it a few time (not intentional)
I have wheeled at least 5 times with the lift and had it fully flexed.

I am not trying to knock you guys out but I think there is something wrong.

I have always had problems with the front springs, I assembled them wrong first, and even assembled right they sat low.

 My everyday load that is in my 4runner is probably closer to 200lbs (that's just my co2 tank, spare parts, tools, etc... Is 300#'s the payload limit? Put however much it takes to move the springs and leave it in there for a couple weeks. Putting your bumper and spare tire back on there will help give it some weight as well.

I don't know anything about your front end but it looks like your rear end has risen since you first put the lift on.

YotaFun

Hey Hey, I know I don't have a CO2 tank I am talking 100lb on top of the spare.
And if you look in the owners manual for the 3rd Gen 4Runner, the pay load limit for the rear cargo area is 300lbs
Bumper wouldn't matter much i can take that and toss it like a foot ball its so light.

Tomorrow after I adjust my rear brakes I will put the spare tire up top since it doesn't fit underneath anymore, and I will go get the two 200lb weights form the weight set down stairs and throw it in there and see what happens.
I wish I could find a pic of the truck after the lift without J's tools in it or it being on a curve.

I've had 950 pounds of sand, brick and paving stones in mine. Actually I made 3 of those loads. Stock '99 springs and the air bags.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e13/mezamichael82/MISC/Photo0072-1.jpg

I'll have to look for the pictures of it in the back and a side view. It actually looks 99% stock with that load. Didn't drive 99% stock but who cares. I'm glad mine didn't come with an owners manual because I probably wouldn't have any fun with the 4runner.

Each paver is 20 pounds, each brick is 5.5 pounds and the sand are 60 pound bags I think.
In front of the bricks are the pavers up to the backs of the seat. My 4runner is usually stock '99 height without the load.

This looks like 420 pounds just in sand.

Ummmm.... you realize you can throw the stock requirement out the window since you upgraded your coils?! Just like Mike has since he upgraded to air bags. There's a big difference in handling with upgraded coils, 400#'s, and a level truck, when compared to stock worn coils, 300#'s, and almost sitting on the bumpstops.

you have the bumpstops on the frame, thats all you need (thats all i have, i never had any sort of conical bumpstop in the coil)

save them for when you want to do airbags (when it gets to that point the coils will have settled like mine and the vehicle will be setting level or high in the front)

also cant tell from the pic but make sure the coils are fully seated on the perches on the axle. my left one was up about 3/4 an inch from the coil stop and was causing SOME of my leaning issues (it still leans, whatever)

The bumper being off is making it look much higher. When you look at the pic when the lift was just done and then the ones you have now. Look at the front of the rear fender in relation to the rear tire, it has not changed much at all. Removing that bumper has made the back look even higher than it actually is.

It's the same with the second gens, removing the stock bumper and putting a tube bumper on it makes the back look much higher.
