You can't have a good home shop without a decent air compressor and of course people just setting up shop want to know what to get etc. So my thought was to get an idea of what people have in their home shops. Give us brand, model, specs (if you have em handy) and of course where you got it and how much you paid.

I have a Coleman Powermate CL0602712

Specs:

27 Gal tank
6 peak HP motor
110V
6 CFM @ 90PSI

It's a direct drive oil-less compressor and it's loud as hell.

It came from Wally World and cost me $399 CDN

i have a 2HP DeVilbiss.

i'll have to look up the specs, but it works OK for painting and airing up, but won't drive air tools for more than about 20-30 seconds.

for painting, 2HP w/ a typical SCFM would be minimum.

for air tools, i would think that a 4HP would be a bare minimum.

Does everything we need it to do and then some :) Had never given us problems either, and I heard Cobalt is a pretty good tool company.

Holy hell, Marko, nice compressor! 13.3 SCFM @ 90 psi is awesome!!!
Does that thing run on 110V or 220V? How loud is it?

I got the Kobalt 30 Gallon...its ok but I need more. Have another 27GAl air tank piped into that. I've had the head leak so far on it, fixed it, ran it about 2 more months and it started leaking again. I just put oil in it like a Chevy..

All I have is a twin tube contractor type Porter Cable 2hp 4gallon. Good for nailers, etc. I had a bigger Craftsman one , but sold it since it couldn't keep up with my blast cabinet air needs.

Eventually I plan to get a big 2 Stage from Eaton (http://www.eatoncompressor.com/page/page/504413.htm)

It runs on 220V and comes with no specific adapter, just wires...so you'll have to do that yourself. It's rated at only 15A so it works fine with a dryer outlet and such.

As far as loudness, it's a 2-stage so it's pretty quiet. You can hear the motor spinning (which is a quiet humming noise) and then a tha-thunk-tha-thunk of the pump, if that makes any sense. Not bad at all.

Put it this way...if you're gonna run it in an attached garage, yes you'll hear it around the house, but I wouldn't call it annoying (that's what we do).

And for $499 it's a steal :)

I'll definately be getting a 2-stage next time. The single stage ones are so loud my poor 3 yr old son nearly jumps out of his skin every time he's nearby and it kicks on. That price of $499 for those specs on both the Sears and the Kobalt are a great deal.

I gotta upgrade mine cause for a blast cabinet and a plasma mine won't keep up. :D

Hey let us how you like it when you get it, no matter which one you decide on :)

Glad I could help!

I have an ancient Craftsman 220V. I want to say it is a 20 gallon. It works well and is quiet but rather slow and too small. Good for a portable though and I got it for free so that helps me like it a lot :D

Any opinions on this for $279?

That's alot like the one I have. It'll be VERY noisy (because it's an oil-less single stage compressor), but the CFM should be enough to run almost any air tool you might need.....pretty good price too.

TDiddy

Yeah, the noise is the only downside. Maybe 7 years ago we got my dad a 30 gal craftsman, very similar to that one - just can't remember what we paid for it.

I have a 33 gal Craftsman compressor similar to the one your gonna get Tom, if I could do it over, I would spend a little more and get a 60 or 80 gallon 2 stage compressor.

My oil less one is just wayyyyyy too loud.

How does this one look? I might buy it soon:

Here is mine. It works well and came with some tools (impact, ratchet and hammer/chisel) As stated by others it's louder than crap and kicks on too much for my taste. Never mind 3 year olds, I jump out of my skin half the time when it kicks on. But it does what I need it to do and it was reasonably cheap at $300.

As long as you have the 220/240v to run it on, that would be a great compressor and very good price too!

This site has some great advice on air compressors as well (top):

Jamie,

Do you know anything about the quality of air tools that are included in the accessory packs on some of these compressors (that craftsman one in particular)?

Somewhat.....do you have a pic of what comes with them?

Like this?
http://s7.sears.com/is/image/Sears/00916852000?hei=250&wid=250&op_sharpen=1

Usually it's all chinese stuff in the cheapo kits....the impact gun is ok, but weak (ie at 230 ft-lbs, don't expect it to take off more than lug nuts), the air ratchet is pretty much junk (you might get 5-6 uses out of it before it dies), the air hammer is ok, but again just for very light duty work (and the chisels, if it comes with them, deform very easily because they lack proper heat treating).

At the very least, get a decent impact gun (for bigger stuff) to go with it like this:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Compressors+%26+Air+Tools&pid=00919984000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Automotive+Air+Tools&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes
It's the exact same as an Ingersoll Rand IR2130, just rebranded and alot cheaper.

You could also pick up an IR2131 1/2" impact gun (about 600 ft-lbs in rev) off eBay if you have the patience to do that (may take some time to wait for a good deal to come along). I got mine off there for about $50 shipped to me and it was barely used. I also got an IR2112 3/8" gun off eBay for $60 shipped, but those are VERY tough to get in decent condition because mechanics use them as their workhorse due to the gun's high power (280 ft-lbs in rev) and low weight compared to a 1/2" gun.

I can see the blast cabinet consumption needs, but the plasma? I didn't think those need much in the way of volume (just needs to be good and dry). Yes, I'm still plasma-less... :tapedshut:

I have 2 of these and they are wonderful 25cfm @ 175PSI, the air quality could be better though I would like to add a dryer of some sort even with the inline filters I get some moisture and that kills your tools. And yes of course I oil the tools and compressor.

i just picked up a 3.5HP / 11 gal from kragen - $90 on sale
not too loud and keeps the tools moving :D

I got this one (click) (http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000FJLT7Y/sr=1-1/qid=1178634384/ref=sr_1_1/103-3187402-9014254?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=15858301)from Sears on sale for $350 CAD. It's a bit loud when it runs, but earplugs are cheap. :D The only thing I own at the time that needs more air that it can provide (on a continuous basis) is my air powered cut-off wheel and die grinder. It's true that a 150 gallon tank and 15-20 cfm @ 100 psi compressor would be nice, but you have to buy the machine that you think you'll need (plus a bit more to be safe).

I've also plumbed in a compressed air distribution system (3/8" hose) in my garage with five quick connect outlets (two on each of my side walls, and one on the back wall at the center of my work bench). It's really convenient to lug just a short coil hose around instead of dragging a 30 foot hose around the whole garage. I still need to get an air dryer and filter to install in my system before I paint my truck.

If you find something at a good price (CDN) up here, lemme know because I need the same thing too for mine!
