So, are we going to do it this year? Or are the gas prices keeping everyone away? I'm down for a trip if everyone else is. Post up and lets get this thing planned!

Edit: Here are the camp out details...

Date: Thursday July 31- Aug. 3

Location: Big Pine Flats... After you make the left into the campground, turn left at the first road. We will be camping in the loop to the right of the restrooms. Sean will put up an orange glowstick for those who come in after dark.

Directions from the 330 or the 18:

going on 18 towards big bear through running springs, pass the tiny town of arrowbear (there will be a valero on the right side, stop and fill up) continue on the road until you get to green valley lake road. make a left on this road (there will be lots of signs for camps and what not). continue north on this road until you come to a turn off for 3n16(on your left) this will be before the town of green valley, if you reach the town, youve gone too far. continue roughly north on 3n16, past crab flats campground, and take a left a 3n14 to big pine flats campground (there is also a fire station located in the camp ground). you will probably be able to see our vehicles. friday night i will put an orange glow stick in camp so you can find us.

What's the approximate time frame? I'm still trying to get my truck CA legal (before I move back to PA?!?), cylinder head installed, cooling problem solved, etc. - but I'd still like to come out to play

YotaGirl

I'm thinking either the 1st or 3rd weekend in August. Those dates work the best for me.

Marc P
07-14-2008, 05:35 PM
Jenn...I am in. Let me know if you need help with planning the trip or the runs. Why dont you pick a couple dates and we can see who is available and when...

YotaGirl
07-14-2008, 05:37 PM
Cool. Thanks Marc. Maybe I should start a poll? Edit: or not since I don't know how to start one haha

YotaGirl
07-14-2008, 05:53 PM
OK so the dates I was thinking about are August 1-3 or August 15-17. Do any of these days work for people or should I pick others? The only day I definitely have something planned is Aug. 10th. So any other weekend would be good for me.

August 15-17 would work best for me . . . . but I'm still a "tentative pending mechanical issues"

I'll be in Lucerne Valley the 15-17th watching Milton (Cabbage) race his truck in the MDR race. So I'm not sure if I can make another trip that month or not. I'll keep an eye on this though.

07-14-2008, 07:21 PM
haha, I've come to learn that all the wheeling places are within an hour of your house. :D I think that race is a night race as well. I was supposed to go to his first race but I couldn't make it so I don't want to miss his second race.

YotaGirl
07-14-2008, 07:42 PM
Yeah, I know about that race. The Rock Brawlers are having their annual night run that same weekend.

And yes...all of the best wheeling spots are with in an hour of my house! :tongueout:

YotaGirl
07-18-2008, 03:45 PM
The first weekend it is! August 1-3.

OK campgrounds. Does anyone have a preference? The only campground that is shut down right now is Hanna Flats, all others are open. We should probably try to book soon since it is the summer which is prime time for mountain camping.

Post up with suggestions. We'll try to decide by tonight or tomorrow morning.

Ok, so Sean and I went wheeling in Big Bear yesterday. We've decided the Big Pine campground would be the best place to camp as it's centrally located to variety of trails. We scoped out all of the loops and found that sites 17-19 are the best. They are shaded and are adjacent to a large meadow. Sean, Chris and I are going up on Thursday to reserve these sites as they are first come, first serve.

Is there anyone else who's interested in going?

Oh and as of right now, campfires are allowed!

I still have the smog ref to impress on Friday morning so I can get CA plates and be legal(my Virginia plates expired over a year ago, so I've only been driving locally).

If that turns out well, I should be able to make it out Saturday. Do you have an idea of what time you're gonna roll out on Saturday?

YotaGirl
07-25-2008, 05:04 PM
We haven't totally decided yet. I'll post up when I find out more...

Seanz0rz
07-25-2008, 05:20 PM
here is the plan:

Friday: set up camp, on your own for food and such, sit around the fire and share wheelin' stories.

Saturday: start from the camp site about 9am and drive to dishpan springs trail head, probably leave the trail head about 930. run dishpan springs and return to camp, eat lunch, then go run john bull in the afternoon. come back to camp and have potluck dinner.

Sunday: pack up camp, run heartbreak ridge (those that want to, its way on the other side of the mountain, a bit down the 38 (long back way to big bear from redlands)

so keith, if you couldnt get up there by 9am sat, you could meet us at camp for the john bull run.

Seanz0rz
07-25-2008, 05:22 PM
also, time to figure out the pot luck. im guessing were doing hamburgers/hotdogs kinda thing.

someone needs to bring a grill, i dont have one.

I just put in the new clutch master cylinder today and the 4runner is ready to go. So is it just going to be our 3 4runners? I'm not exactly sure when I'm heading up, it all depends on which of my buddies are coming with me. I'm definitely coming, but I have 3 friends who are on the fence. I'll get up there somewhere between Thursday at 3PM to Friday at 8AM, depends on them.

Ok, the potluck on friday works for me. hhmm, what should I bring? What do we need?

Sounds good! Do you know how to get to the Big Pine Flats Campground?

As far as what to bring...this is what we still need: hotdog & hamburger buns, cheese, lettuce, tomato, a desert.

Post up what you're bringing. I'll be sure to get whatever is left so we have a complete meal.

Could I bug you to post up directions? Maybe edit post #1 with directions, times, etc? I'm fairly certain I'll be coming, it's just a matter of whether it'll be Friday night or if I can get the wife awake early enough on Saturday morning to be there early. Either way, we'll be staying one night. I gotta bring my greyhound with, is that gonna be a problem with the campground or anyone else?

some of the roads are closed up there, here is probably the quickest way from 330 or the 18.

going on 18 towards big bear through running springs, pass the tiny town of arrowbear (there will be a valero on the right side, stop and fill up) continue on the road until you get to green valley lake road. make a left on this road (there will be lots of signs for camps and what not). continue north on this road until you come to a turn off for 3n16(on your left) this will be before the town of green valley, if you reach the town, youve gone too far. continue roughly north on 3n16, past crab flats campground, and take a left a 3n14 to big pine flats campground (there is also a fire station located in the camp ground). you will probably be able to see our vehicles. friday night i will put an orange glow stick in camp so you can find us.

I left my house in San Diego for big bear around 6:45PM. On the drive up my speedometer stopped working at around the half way point. With only a few miles left to go the 4runner starts shaking. I pull over to check it out and it turns out the output shaft (i believe it's called the yoke) on my transfer case was about to fall off and I was leaking a trail of gear oil. At first I panicked and started planning on getting it towed back. I saw some signs up ahead so I walked down the highway only to find out that I broke down on the very last turnout before the lake, I was probably about 500 feet away from the water. After I calmed down I realized that the nut on the shaft probably worked its way loose. So at 10PM I crawled under my 4runner, dropped the drive shaft, tightened the nut, heated the nut up with a barbeque lighter, pounded the locking dimple thing down and re-installed the shaft. After I got everything back together I started the 4runner up and limped it through town, going around 10mph towards the only auto parts store in town, Napa. While going 10mph with my emergency blinkers on I managed to get pulled over. Luckily the cop was cool and didn't give me a ticket. So now I'm parked in front of Napa, about to sleep in my 4runner until I can get some synthetic gear oil when they open tomorrow morning at 8AM. Then head over to Big Pine Flats to meet up with everyone and finally hit the trails! After all I've been through, these trails better be amazing!
