is it necessary after lifting and adding larger tires?

not required but helpful for gas mileage and performance.

if you have an auto and 4.10s (which you do) you should be ok with 33's or less.

i drove that way for yrs.

It depends on how big of tires you go. The bigger the tires, the more sluggish your truck gets.

If your out for just looks, the public cant see the gears.

It depends on what size tire you will be running. For 3rd gen 4Runners, 4.88's are a good match for 35's, 4.56 for 33's (these are all arguable depending on if you tow).

i have 33's with 4.10. it sucks, its manageable, but im sick of it. ill be looking at regearing this next winter/spring.

i do get great highway mileage though! 65mph(actual, 62 indicated) at about 1800 rpm.. hehe.

Curious, while we are on the topic of gearing, I was looking at the expedition west build, they were running 5.29 in that taco.
The taco was an auto and had a stock t-case and engine, and he was running 33s.
Anyone know why he would do that?
Isn't that too much gearing?

great low end for the trails, must suck on the street though.

Suck, I doubt it.

I ran 3.4 with 5.29 and 33's with an auto. It was in my 95, even lighter than a 3rd Gen. I could get 20 mpg and go an indicated 90-95 on the speedo.

There have been a lot of good threads about what others have used. I don't think diff gears make THAT big of a difference on the trail with an auto. Unless you go extremely deep, I don't think they make THAT big a difference on road in real life. Theory is a whole different deal.

Thanks for the input guys.
I was just curious, I want to regear myself, but don't want to have to do it twice, and after reading the expedition west build it just got me thinking thats all..

I run my '84 with a carb'd 22R, a 5 speed, and 33's withthe stock 4.10's and I dont have any real trouble on the interstate, or around town. :)

Let's try to stay apples to apples.

We know a 5 spd gives a little since you pick the gears.

I posted up because I have basically a cleverly disguised 3rd Gen as far as drivetrain, literally the engine, tranny and cases. With the dominant paradigm, my truck should have spontaneously combusted.

yeah although it could be argued that the auto can mask a lot of the discomfort and fatigue of picking gears to suit your speed.

rather than just mash the pedal down more you actually feel the fact that the truck struggles via having to downshift to gain power.... so it's probably less noticeable in an auto.

Good point and true. Seems the auto guys gripe less at the start, then realize it sucks and have to pony up for gearing.

I am not gripping at all fyi :D
I haven't even got 33's yet.

But I don't want to kill my tranny sooner then it should die (though it has been having issues lately downshift as much as I would like...)

Again thanks for the input guys!
I greatly appreciate it, and to the OP again sorry for the hijack :)
