I have noticed while at elevation and climbing I get an odor inside of my 4runner. It smells like warm gear oil and it bugs the hell out of my wife (she's pregnant and has this super smell sense). I can smell it but it's not too bad. Nothing on the truck leaks, especially the transmission. Is there some sort of breather on the transmission or t case that leads to the transmission tunnel? I'm thinking the smell is coming from there. In the spring I installed a URD short shift kit and everything installed great and I sealed everything up. Anything else I should try?

 Haha, the prego super smell!!!! This last pregnancy, I had to wash the damn dog almost everyday for the first trimester, due to my wife thinking he "stunk enough to make her gag". Poor dog!

Vicks vapor rub under her nose should do the trick. :hillbill:

Does it smell like spent shotgun shells?

Spent shotgun shells sounds close. It's an oily smell. The truck doesn't burn oil and doesn't leak any fluids so that's why I'm thinking breather. I think the smell builds up in the tunnel and leaks in. While up in the hills we had the AC on but had to open the windows to purge the stank. I'll check for that t case breather and make sure it's not all gunked up.

Are you sure the rear axle seal isn't blown? They leak into the brakes and cause the burnt oil smell.

Nope, both have been replaced within the last oil change.
