Well, I'm working on getting the 4Runner back in tip-top fighting shape, and that means I have to do something I've been putting off for a while- get the supercharger rebuilt.

The nose drive has been leaking a little from behind the pulley for a few thousand miles now, and I figured I could maybe just get a replacement seal and do it myself; anyone that has gotten the TRD supercharger rebuilt before knows this is not the case. Turns out the options are as follows:

1) Buy a new nose drive from Toyota (ouch, expensive I bet)
2) Possibly buy a "rebuild kit" off Ebay (sounds sketchy to me)
3) Get the nose drive rebuilt by Magnuson (approx. $250)
4) Get the entire s/c completely rebuilt by Magnuson (approx. $750)

Unfortunately for my wallet, I'm thinking I have to go with option 4. The supercharger has about 75,000 miles on it now, so its pretty much due for a rebuild as it is; and IMO $250 is a lot just for a rebuild of the nose drive when $750 gets you a complete rebuild incluing new rotors, bearings, seals, everything.

I love my 4Runner, but this whole pay-to-play things sucks right now :ban:

I feel your pain. I paid it off two months ago then had to drop a lot of cash into maintenance and lift. (needed new coils and shocks anyways)

Have you changed the oil in it at all Brian? Either way. You are right, its prolly bout time for an overhaul on it. You dont wanna end up in my possistion when I was FORCED to rebuild mine. Driving down the road to the gas station, hear what it sound to be pinging, then all of a sudden LOUD squieling from the belts, and lots of loss in power. Siezed the S/C :(. It ran me about $800 including shipping from Arizona to Cali where they are located to do a full rebuild. When I got it back though it was like christmas for me :D. All nice and shiney!!!

Oil has never been replaced by me, I think the oil was replaced at 40k miles ago. The s/c has always run very quietly and smoothly. Puts out good boost and doesn't rattle or squeak, I feel that I might as well get it rebuilt while things are good. I don't want to wait for a major failure to get the work done. $1000 in preventative maintinence is usually worth twice to three times that in repairs.

I got my RGA number from Magnuson today, going to take the supercharger off tonight and ship it tomorrow. Mitch at Magnuson is a great guy, he's very helpful and will be keeping me in the loop for the whole process. Hope to have a 5-6 day turnaround for the whole rebuild, I'm looking forward to having it all happy again!

Pulled the supercharger out, and carefully packed it for shipping. Plan on insuring it for $2000, just in case something bad happens. Only took about 45 minutes to pull the charger, and that was going pretty slow, taking pictures and bagging & tagging bolts/parts.

Dirty charger, you can see the oil is leaking out of the seal behind the pulley:

Wiped up, ready for packing. I removed the bypass valve as it is very prone to damage during shipping. The bolts holding it on were super tight and I sort of stipped their hex sockets taking them off; plan on requesting new ones when they rebuild:

Wrapped, ready to get boxed. I packed it in a 18"x18"x20" box with tons of packing paper densely packed around it. It will take some real abuse to damage the thing I think (I have heard horror stories of pulley shafts getting bent during shipping). Plan to put "fragile" stickers on the box to make doubly sure.

glad to see you taped up the intake runners. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen "techs" leaving an engine open in a garage for days at a time with all kinds of crap floating around in the air.

When you get it back, you'll need to hose out the engine bay so it doesn't look out of place, being all clean and such . . .

just for curiosity's sake, about how much does an SC weigh?

If I remember correctly, I think it was around 35 lbs (atleast the 1st gen S/C).

Sounds about right, I think the gen 2 s/c is a little less. I'll figure out the weight when I ship it today.

Yeah, something falling into the engine would be disastrous to say the lest, so I'm always careful to tape the intake ports over. When I installed the URD kit I did the same thing:

Yeah, my engine bay's a mess right now. It's tough to keep it clean when you off-road it...

The shipped weight was 35lb 12.5oz. Nice guess Stevo3 :hillbill:

Magnuson gave me call and told me they received the supercharger and inspected the innards. Other than some oil on the rotors, everything was in good shape. The rotors do not need to be replaced, which means all they need to replace are the bypass valve internals, and bearings and seals throughout. Final price is $305 plus shipping back to me, which needless to say is much less than I expected

I'm going to have to consider getting myself a TruFlow filter so I don't get any oil in my intake from the two-stage foam Amsoil filter...

On a semi-related note, the supercharger drive belt has a "new" part number. Happily, the Toyota dealership here in Santa Fe had several in stock, so I bought two so I have a spare. I put the part numbers into the TRD 3.4l Supercharger Wiki page for future reference.

"New" Toyota Part Number: PTR30-35040

Dayco Part Number: 00602-17620-026

Gadget's Dayco Part Number: 491C-1575-DB

EDIT: Just to keep the part numbers in one place, I also found the part number for the replacement TRD gasket that goes between the throttle body and the supercharger.

TRD Supercharger Throttle Body Gasket: PTR26-35041

Could you possibly be just over oiling your Amsoil filter?

It's possible, I didn't feel like I was putting a whole lot of oil on it, but it's hard to say how much is enough, you know?

I received the supercharger in the mail last Friday, it looks so shiny and pretty :bling: That made their turnaround incredibly fast because they got it in the mail on Mon, I talked to them about it on Tuesday and got the quote, paid them Wednesday and they shipped it off that afternoon with 2nd day shipping.

Unfortunately, they accidentally threw my seperately-packed bypass valve out with the box thinking I didn't send it to them; so they're mailing me a new one today (free of charge) and I should be getting it this Wednesday. Can't say enough good stuff about Magnuson's customer service
