now ill start off by saying my gas tank is a lil smushed. when my left rear tire is compressed while flexing the driveshaft hits the gas tank a little. i was just curious if any other 3rd gen runners out there have this issue.

I have read of a few guys having this issue.
I think they either bashed that part of the skid in or just too the old one off and make a better one that would clearance the drive shaft.
I didn't have this issues which I was surprised, and I was def at full stuff a lot.

You have the complete Sonoran Steel Kit or did you piece together your own?

Get under there, pull the d-shaft (it's just 8 bolts) and then take a BFH and pound in the skid plate where it contacts the DS, then replace the driveshaft, you're good to go!

i did. i used a cutoff wheel and cut a square out so it would stop rubbing. then i hammered the surrounding area in. i didnt need to remove the dshaft to do this.

Pound it for more clearance x2. Bumpstops !. A 2" body lift cures it on 1st gen, cause you cut the brackets and bolt it back up ( I dont advise this without a motor swap to go with it). Go big and go fuel cell.

the only thing i have from sonoran is the rear brake line. the rest i peiced together.

i made a skidplate for the tank and clearanced the shit out of it so the the elocker guard and differential yoke wont hit it, which are rediculously close to the tank. it was fine untill the takeover when the driveshaft caught an edge of the skiplate i made and bent it so that it was hitting constantly. so on trail 13 b i got under my truck pulled the rear of the shaft out of the way and used the BFH method. it worked fine untill this past weekend when it starting hitting lightly again. i can clearance more of the skidplate i suppose and smash the tank away from it. i was more curious to see if others have or were having this problem. i wasnt sure if it was cuz mine is all deformed or if its just what happens with 3rd gen runners when they flex out.

do you have the adjustable pan hard bar?
That might help the issue?

my dshaft weight hits the gas tank skid when i flex, but it because i folded out that section of the skid on a rock.

i also hit the rear corner of the skid on the 3rd/dshaft flange.

im working on making a new skid, just havent got around to it.

ive been tossing around the idea of a fuel cell, but still want to use the factory fuel filler tube. just not sure how to go about it yet.

You should just relocated the gas tank to the rear where the spare tire use to mount.
BruceTS did this with I believe the gas tank from a Ford F-150
You might want to pm him on the details.

If you can stand the noise get a button zerk that won't sheer off. I also cut a square out of the skid as mentioned above. Many of us have this problem and have learned to cope.

i cope with alot but im not gonna cope with my brand new $1100 elocker hitting my gas tank. the yoke drags on it and the part of my driveshaft that hits is where the u joint is so it grabs the one of the 2 ears as it spins around and is quite violent sounding.

smash and or cut the skid, and call it a day

I mean you cant move the locker, or the d-shaft.... so move the skid, one way or antoher....

I was just addressing your driveline contact.

I had a bump stop issue that led to my drive shaft making contact with the gas tank skid, this is right after I went with longer shocks. Sheared the 6mm zerk clean off. I ended up cutting a square out of the gas tank skid and re-positioned a bump stop. Hopefully that will fix it.

Steve over at Sonoran suggested just putting a 6mm plug in place of the zerk and to just put a zerk in when you are greasing everything.

so you dont know if the bump stop helped with the rubbing yet? i just sheared the zerk fitting off a 2nd time. i thought bumpstops may help but i dont wanna loose any travel in the rear, this thing flexes great right now.

ya i had this problem too... u took off the skid and just cut that whole side off front to rear cause it was hitting farther up too.

i'm with these guys, brian. banging it back doesn't fix it. just cut that trouble area of the skid.

I have the same problem. I just figured that the zerk got knocked off by a rock but now that I'm thinking about it I don't remember seeing any scratches on the drive shaft. I reconnected my rear sway bar and that helped but it still rubs when I'm flexed out. I also noticed my pan hard drop bracket shifted to the driver's side a little from flexing out. Next time I'm under there I might shift the pan hard bar a little to the passenger side and weld it back into place. Maybe that'll help a little.

moving the drop bracket to the pass side will probably help or fix it, but its probably gonna pull the axle maybe .5" - 1" towards the pass side. gotta try something though

im using the 6mm bolt method and puting the zerk back only when needed and have had no problems since.
