it sounds like those bullet bikes. It nay be quicker than a ferrari, but doesn't look nearly as good crossing the line. Let's see the crash test results...

How about this one? Looks a little more "street friendly" and stable. :)

The Smart supposedly does well in crash tests - this video makes a high speed impact look survivable

not a rally car, but I'm guessing you already saw the one where they dropped the body onto a modified Unimog chassis . . .

Yeah, and then the only video they have of it is it basically driving around in a dirt parking lot. :shake:

In a rear end collision, I'd prefer my pickup over a smartcar. I expect if we see more of those on the road and they begin to be involved in wrecks, we'll see a disparity of fatalites assigned to the diminutive Smart.

Of course then the cry from the tyrannical militant environmentalists will be that everyone MUST drive a similarly diminutive vehicle or not at all. Since semi trucks and buses are at once necessary and comparatively mammoth in size, we will then all be trapped into retreating from them in our shiney new Smart cars.

There will be a need for more room for larger families and cargo capable vehicles so Smart and the like will create a design for those while the secular crown makes it's case for fewer children allowed for each family. When the people do not voluntarily comply, the concerned social engineers will appeal to govt. to force their vision. This, as we have seen before, will be leveraged into possibility by the urgency of global climate jeopardy and the scarcity of resources.

Sound like improbable science fiction? These are all conditions assembled from existing political policiies around the world. The same cases made for these policies in other locations have been, and are being, made here. The difference is only that the population at large has not yet bought into it enough for the powerful to impose it yet. We'll see how long it takes or if we can reverse it at all.

I think a better direction which allowes for the possibility of INCREASED standard of living, personal freedom and expansion of economic dynamics would be to use ANY resources we have national access and control over while we aggressively pursue cleaner renewable fuels the adequately replace those we choose now through free market forces. I would be in favor of diverting funds currently issued to ungrateful foreign countries as social subsidies to grants and rewards to private firms to develop those cleaner fuels and the infrastructure to deliver it. Let there be a clean fuels race the way there was a space race.
