I replaced my drive belts last weekend because one of them had been slipping since I bought the 4runner. Today while idling I was hearing a chirping noise and thought it was one of the belts, it's not. I narrowed it down to the clutch, I think. At regular idle, mostly when it's cold, there is a slight chirping noise. I think it goes away when the rpm's go up but maybe the engine noise is just louder and I can't hear the chirping, whatever. Anyways, when I press in the clutch pedal the noise goes away. I used to have a truck that ended up needing a throw out bearing but it made more of a whirling noise, no chirping. Any idea what's going on here? Does the clutch need adjustment? Other than regular driving I have not done anything to the vehicle. The sound is new within the last couple of days.

There is no adjustment for the clutch, it's hydraulic and will automatically self adjust. I think my 4runner is making a similar noise. this weekend I'm going to drain the trans fluid (gear oil) through a paint filter and look for any metal bits, if there are none I'm not going to worry about it . . .

If it goes away when you depress the clutch pedal, then it is more than likely caused by the clutch very lightly touching the flywheel. could be a bearing, could be a warped flywheel. How old is the clutch/flywheel?

I've only owned the vehicle since January. It's a '99 and I bought it with 84,000 miles on the clock. After buying it I changed all the fluids. Redline syntheic was put in the transfer case and transmission.
