Just picked up my 86 4Runner over the weekend...I love it! 22RE 5SPD, 3" lift, newer tacoma wheels on bfgs, 221k miles and runs great!
Paid 2200 for it, and that included about 1500 in audio/dvd stuff as well.
Before I bought it, the seller told me that the starter solenoid was starting to go out..that sometimes it would just click when you tried to start it..I didn't think much of it, a starter is an easy 20-30 minute job on these things and if worse came to worse I could push it a pop the clutch.
Day after I bought it, I picked up a new starter..tossed it in, and....still clicked when I tried to start it..replaced the battery cable going to the solenoid, still did it..pulled the trim off the steering column, pulled out the ignition switch, cleaned up the contacts with contact cleaner..still did it..At this point I was starting to get frustrated with my new runner. Hopped online and did a little bit of reading, found out that its a common problem with these and there was an easy solution..So I picked up a standard 50amp relay, some 12 and 16 gauge wire and hooked a relay up between the starter solenoid and the battery.
It now starts everytime on the first crank. :D
