OK, simply put, I am building an epic rope swing and I need a recommendation for what type of rope/knot to use. Discuss...

I used figure eights, and static rope (some marine stuff).

Nylon rope is always good, but will have stretch to it. Propylene rope is good, and wont stretch as much but is also not as flexible. As far as the knot it depends on whether you are talking about the knot to attach to your swings fulcrum point, or another knot in your swing assembly...

Fulcrum point.

If it were me, and I was doing it, I would go for a very secure slipknot for my first ring around the fucrum point (I assume its a tree branch) and then wrap is 2 time on either side of the original rig, and then tie it off underneath the limb with a good overhand knot.
I have seen an "ultimate rope swing before that I think would hold really well, it was a 3 ring noose around the tree branch (with 13 horizontal rings on the down rope) and it held for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS.

we use figure-8s a ton in climbing so i figure if its good enough to take a long climbing fall, its good enough for a swing. i would probably do a single figure 8 with lots of slack in the end, wrap it around said branch a couple times, then go back with the double figure 8 if it were me.

OK, an interesting wrench has been thrown in the works. My tree of choice has since been cut down by the fun police. A fellow rope swing aficionado climbed up adjacent trees an strung up a cable. From the cable, as you can see, hung new rope swings which have subsequently be cut. Failure is not an option, so what is my next move?

We managed to find a good one on the same pond, nowhere near as high as the original, however:

well if they keep getting cut down what do you think you can do? they obviously dont want it there and i feel like youre going to waste money putting something up only to be taken down

right cuz steel cant ever be cut or anything...let alone can't rust and the trees its attached to can't also be cut down...

Don't worry about my $$, I'll take the loss on the rope. That being said, I think cutting down trees to prevent a rope swing is ridiculous.
Whose land is it is the question, if its public unless they are park rangers or cops no one can cut or erect anything technically.

The land belongs to the Native Americans.

I was just kidding. Who cut the trees down has nothing to do with my question.
I'm going to go look into how much that catapult weighs.

Its probably a land owner who is afraid of being sued...The sad fact of it all is that someone may come in behind you and get hurt. They will in turn the land owner will be sued and will lose because for some reason being an idiot is an easy way to make money.
