When picking up food at a restaurant for take out, whether pizza or something more fancy, do you give a tip? I feel cheap with I put down $0, but at the same time they didn't do anything to earn the tip.

The only time that I tip is if I wait for the food and they give me water, tea, etc.

If it's just in and out, then no under most circumstances.

if i get exceptional customer service, then yes. however that rarely happens with takeout, so typically no.

If it's an actual restaurant and I'm just picking the food up, I will tip a little bit. Mainly because the cooks usually get a cut of the tips and they still did the same work whether I ate there or not.

I wouldn't in your situation. My wife loves to order in, as call them up and have them bring you food. I don't really like this because it means we eat crap and are too lazy to get the crap ourselves. I tip when they bring it to us and pretty well in a restaurant.

I have a friend who worked in the food service for a long time and paid bills with tips. She has a good job now and makes decent money. She tips everyone all the time. She sees it as her way to give back. Whatever floats your boat.

not when picking up. i did that just last night and i know the feeling but i only tip when a service is rendered, aka driving it to me or waiting on me, not just taking my cash so i can use my own gas money to bring it home.

I usually try to give a tip of about 8 or 10% for take out, because it is still wait staff bringing it to me, normally. If it is a place that does nothing but take out, then no.

leaving a tip means i get service, not just food. it would be like tipping the cashier at the grocery store.

I don't tip for take out. I just tip for dine in or delivery.

This brings up another question I've been wondering about though. Should a person tip the carhops at Sonic or other drive ins?
