Once you are in the park, head South down the beach. The camp area will be right at pole #6.
The camp will be between the high tide line and the restrooms which are a couple hundred yards in towards the dunes. We should be the biggest group out there that weekend so we should be pretty easy to spot.

Safety Information

As always, call 911 first in case of dire health related or safety emergency.

If you have an incident requiring hospitalization, here is a map to the best emergency center in the area, according to my doctor friend who lives in Pismo Beach. The hospital is roughly 5 miles away, but very easy to get to:

Arroyo Grande Hospital
345 S. Halcyon Rd
Arroyo Grande, CA
805-473-7650

Save this as a PDF and print from your printer: http://www.4runners.org/image/pismo/HOSPITAL-PISMO.pdf I highly suggest if you are attending this event, print out a color copy (best) and put a copy in your glove box.

See you guys out there!

Bob

EDIT:

An alternative/quicker, but more twisty route from south entrance:

Head eastbound on Pier Ave
Right on Route 1 (Front St)
Left on Belridge St
Left on 13th St
Right on the Pike
Left on S. Halcyon Rd

Note: This route is not arrow routed nor visible on the PDF map.

Some suggested items to bring for dune running and camping:

Spare set of keys (sand can have a funny way of swallowing up important things)
Water for drinking, cleaning, etc... especially if you are camping
If tent camping, some kind of sand stakes or at least heavy items to leave in the corners of your tent.
Toilet Paper :poke:
Warm clothes (it can really cool off at night)
Wet weather gear (we'll keep an eye on the weather as it gets closer)
Small broom and dustpan for those tent camping (it won't take you long to figure out why you need it)
Shovel (helpfull for many things in the sand, in the camp and while out on the dunes)
Snatch strap (no metal hooks!)
CB or at least some of those little handheld family radios (we will run both)
Piece of plywood or other wood to put your jack on to keep it from sinking in the sand in the event you need to use it.
Fire Extinguisher
First Aid kit (we will have some out there, but it is always a great idea to have a small stocked one in your vehicle)
....more to come as I think of other things

Saturday:
8am- Early dune run for those that want a quick tour of the dunes
9:30 am- Group Vehicle and People Photo: we will try to line up in a single file; if too long, then we will do two rows. Also, we will do a group photo---yes, we should take pictures of ourselves!
10am- Some kind of group event to be determined (poker run, observation run, gps games, etc...)
12:30- Lunch
6pm.- Clam Chowder Bread Bowls from Splash Cafe!
7pm.- Raffle and "Can You Believe I Own This Shirt" contest
All you need for this contest is to bring your funniest, most embarrassing, shirt and wear it for the contest. The crowd will be the judges and the winner will receive an Utimate Yota t-shirt.

Sunday:
Pack up
Trail run for those that are interested. We will hit the Chevron Station to air up and fuel for those that need it. Hi Mtn. Rd. up to Hi Mtn. Lookout (2WD friendly), from there we will have a few options. For those with 4wd and not too concerned about brush scratches, they can do some of Garcia Ridge Trail, others can continue on Hi Mtn Rd. to Pozo (and then out to Hwy 101), or others could backtrack on Hi Mtn. Rd. to Hwy 101. (I will provide directions and I will post them here with GPS coord. so you can copy them yourself also).

*Jenn of JnJ has been nice enough to volunteer to come up with some activities for the kids. If you are bringing kids, please post up their ages so that Jenn can have a decent idea of the age groups and how many. Also, if you have any ideas let either me or Jenn know. Jenn, thanks again!*

I can do that, the only problem for me is that I may be booked solid on weekends till the 25th. I have to check with April on the dates, but starting with Easter, I have some damn thing to go to everyweekend. My bro's batchelor party in SF, his wedding the next weekend, a wedding the weekend after that, april's cousin's graduation from med school in SF another weekend, my grandpa's 80th bday bash, and I am sure I am missing something. I may be wrong, but I think the weekend of May 19th is open. June is open and most of July. Last week of July and 1st week of August the inlaws are in town. After that I am free.

The weekend of May 19th may work out pretty good. I think that may be early enough in the season. Spring and Fall are probably the best weather at the beach. Fog is always an option, especially when it gets hot inland. I actually like riding around there when it's nice and cool, the overcast sky makes for great lighting for photos also. Pismo 4RJ works for me, wasn't sure if you wanted to change it or not. If it is during a time I can go, I will definately spearhead it, even if I can't go I will be able to help out in the planning. I'll have to get Milton involved, he knows those dunes like the back of his hand.

Added some links to the first post for those that want to read up on the dunes and surrounding area. I will add more as I find them. Some ideas that I have been thinking of: (some are totally from other events I have been to, I don't want to copy but just some ideas)

Poker run (w/ prizes would be really cool)
Raffle (not needed but would be cool)(SNT combined the poker run and raffle, was really cool)
Potluck w/ a chef contest (would need some good participation to make it work otherwise just a potluck)
Trail run in the local mountains (could be the last day, pack up hit a trail run, eat lunch, and head home)
Some kind of game or something for the significant others that we drag along to these things (sand drags :D if you are brave enough to turn over your keys)

Give me some more ideas!

Bumpitty, bumpitty..... Need input on dates! The fall may be better just to give people time to plan and to get more participation as the word spreads. May 19th also works for me. If we pick a fall date, we could always plan a "prerun" for May 19th.

When is the UY merchandise going to be available?

As far as me is concerned...not gonna make this trip. I have to put all my efforts into school and I won't be able to do anything that major until high school is over. Next fall would've been better for me as well, but I see that won't happen.

After talking with Bob, it seems that there may be more interest for this trip to happen in the fall. It also gives us more time to plan. For those who have not been to the dunes during the off season, it is so much more fun and less crowded. Not to mention, much safer! I am thinking September or October, preferably not Labor Day weekend (very busy weekend). I know this is when school is in session, so we need to figure out what weekend will work out best. We don't need to decide right now, but the sooner the better so that plans can be made and you can put it on your schedule early.

I also added this update to the first post along with links for the dunes and surrounding area.

In the end, I want to make this not just a trail run at the beach, but an actual event that the whole family can come and enjoy. Fun wheeling, beach, sun, bbq, prizes, etc... :camping:

Bob98SR5
04-08-2007, 10:53 PM
guys,

i would have to agree with chris here: the summer time is just way too crowded and the nutjobs really seem to come out during the summer. i agree that we postpone this trip until after the summer---or before as we proposed. but for now, lets just go with making this an after summer trip.

The only problem with late august, is that the weekends are still crazy. It's not bad during the week but the weekends are still a zoo. STill doable if that is what everyone wants. Do schools still get Columbus Day off? If so Oct. 5-8 might work. Sept. any weekend except for Labor Day weekend would also work. Lucky for me this year, me and my wife's anniversary falls in the middle of the week, hehe.

Bob98SR5

there are two people who have the best idea of crowd level here: slosurfer and cabbage. so i am going to defer to them at least for the right months ot plan the trip.

ok, deep breath...rant coming:

you know, whats with pismo and all the college students bitching about school? i swear, i never hear college students bitching about school on other runs during the year---just freakin' pismo. waaaaaa!!! and as if people who work dont have it equally difficult: most of us have to get out at 5-6pm, go home, pack, fight traffic to make it to the place at midnite on friday night bone tired. or, leave extra early on saturday to make a full day's run.

this has been the bane of planning pismo in the summertime. im tired of hearing about it :shake:

so im glad we are planning it in the fall too. yes, aug is nutso too.

ok chris, toct sounds good to me.

The first post has the link for reservations. Once again, the dates are Oct. 12th-14th.

At some stage you were asking for imput for activities. I use to organise observation runs (sort of hide and seek) recording specific answers to questions at various locations provided by various instructions. Lots of fun. You need to have an observer to call out directions, help fetch items, and generally follow maps. Might be worth considering for a down-time activity and could even be taken off the sand for a while eg thru town and back. It does take someone to do a prerun and organise the instructions/clues/prizes. Just an idea. What aboutr geocache'ing?

Thanks Mark, that was really helpful.

Blake, your rig will do just fine out there. Many of the rigs out there are 2wd. Momentum is important, as well as where you park. Also, with the amount of rigs out there getting a tug is super easy. Usually most people keep the tow strap hooked up to their rear and then throw it in the back, that way it is easy to stop and hook up to pull people out.

We snapped the rear axle earlier this year in Nevada.. So we just put a 2wd rear diff in (think it was like 20 bucks or something with gears) Might be upgrading to a Tundy LSD diff soon though...

I still have it, there was a part that broke on the diff that Toyota wont sell individually, but my buddy told me he might be able to get another (2nd) broken elock diff and we should be able to make 1 good one out of 3 bad ones.. (he works at Toyota)

So we'll see what happens, open diff isn't that bad, its only effecting the acceleration so far.

Who all has a gps unit or is bringing a gps unit? Just want to get an idea, so I can know whether or not to include some gps events.

I will have my Garmin Ique there... What kind of events are we talking about? Geocaching on the dunes?

Also, are we going to be staying at the dunes the whole time or going on some trails in the surrounding areas? Back in the day when I used to go offroading with another club we went to pismo and did some trails out there that were pretty cool...

slosurfer
05-01-2007, 11:13 PM
I am not sure about geocaching out there, I still have to check on that. One idea was a scavenger/observation run that may have some locations to find by gps. Will really only work if the majority have some type of gps unit.

I would like to do a local trail run on Sunday. Surf N Turf does a similar thing with their event and it seemed like it worked really well. Pack up sunday morning, hit the trail, eat lunch, go home or run more trails if you have the time. I for one will probably do more trails, I run out there all the time.

I have to do some prerunning starting at the dunes, but I am pretty sure that it would be too hard to fit in a trail run and anything else on Sat. What I could do is provide the info for the trails so that if some people want to run trails on Sat. instead of do stuff at the dunes, they can do that and meet up with the group later at the dunes. From my experience, the time to get to the trails, run them and enjoy them, takes most of the day. Maybe possible night trail run Sat. night, weather permitting.

I may even drag my propane BBQ out there since I am somewhat close? Another option would be to run into Pismo for some Splash Cafe clam chowder  or even pick up a big order to go and bring it back. For those who haven't had it, you can't come here and not try it.

The surf isn't great right there at the dunes, but if you go into town to the pier there may be something. Shell Beach has some spots also. I would suggest a longboard if you are just bringing one board.

Glad you guys like the shirts. I got a little caught up in trying to add more 4runners on it by adding the front pic, but I like it now, much better. Should I change the kids one also? I am leaving the toddler one how it is.

You can rent them in town pretty cheap. The waves aren't all that great at the dunes. If it is small, there may be something to fun with a longboard, if it is big, that is another story.

i can take Chris's design over to my buddy and see what it would cost.

Got my test shirt in the mail today! Looks good. It is a Hanes tagless 6.1 and very comfortable. You'll have to forgive the ugly model, he was the only one I could get on such short notice. :D I told my wife to at least keep his ugly mug out of the pics.

I updated the first post with this info:

All shirt preorders need to be in by Sept. 9th. That should give me plenty of time to get the sponsor's names on them, order them and have a little leeway in case I need to send them back.

Shirt ordering info:
Adult shirt- $15.00
Kids shirt- $14.00
Toddler shirt- $9.00

The shirts will be available for pickup at the event. If you want a shirt and cannot make the event, add $5.00 for shipping. All shipped t-shirts will be sent out the day after the event.

Send paypal payment to (stoveck_one@hotmail.com) Make sure to include your name and screenname, sizes and type of shirt. The preview link above has the shirts and sizes that are available for each shirt. If you don't have paypal, send me a pm and I will give you my address to send a check.
Once again orders need to be in by Sept. 9th.

You can order one anytime up till Sept. 9th. That is when I will put the order in and will give me time to hopefully get some sponsors and add their names to the back of the shirts. The 1st post has all the ordering info in it. YOu will have to specify if you want the design with the pic on the front like the one I just got. If you don't specify, you will get the new designed one that just has writing on the front.

Joey, glad to see you are going to make it. YOu going to bring the taco or the 4runner?

In relation to surfing, I'll prolly take my 10ft, 8ft, the kids boogie boards and the 9ft foamy surfboard. I'll wait to see what the predictions are for surf before I decide. If the surf is halfway reasonable, a 6' Fish will go off in the little banks near the dunes. I've surfed the dune area of my 7ft several times but a smaller board like a fish would be better. Just check Surfline.com before heading down to Pismo. You'll gte an idea of whether it's worthwhile taking all the surf crap.

You ever seen a Norcal event thread on TTORA.. they usually end up over a 1000 posts it's crazy. Chris I'll get in touch with ya about the shirt.. you still have the same cell #? Providing I'm not deployed I'll be bringing the Runner probably. Still not comfortable wheeling the Taco.

slosurfer
06-23-2007, 07:05 PM
I made an alternate design with the group pic on the back. You can view it right here. (http://www.cafepress.com/slosurfer)
Note: nevermind the price listed on that website, I don't want any ordered off there yet, but if you are willing to pay that price then go for it. :D I won't be ordering them off of there, but this is the only way I can display them. That way you can view the actual shirts and see the sizes, etc.

The question has been raised about different colors for the shirts. I will look into it and see if it will raise the price or not. As of right now the "natural" color is the one that we are going with.

Joey, yep, same cell #. Too scared to wheel the taco! I am making my wife bring hers out there. Should be a huge difference compared to my 3.0 :D

xonetruth- I got you added to the list. It's looking like there are going to be many families going which is great!

All right! I kind of went through and reworked all the shirts. After some conversations with people, etc... I went with the group pic for the back of the shirts, it shows more of the atmosphere of the dunes and the 4RJ. I will still offer the original back design, you will just have to ask for it specifically when you order. I also added a women's shirt and a hoodie. The women's shirt is the same price as the guys and the hoodies will be $25.

Check them out! (http://www.cafepress.com/slosurfer) This preview also shows the different colors that are available for the different shirts. I think the hoodie is the only one that I am not offering in a different color. Check them out, look at the colors, and let me know what you guys think. I want to be done with the shirt for now till I have to add sponsor names to it. I need to concentrate on getting sponsors now :D

I did this drive in a day and a half. It isn't too bad. I was also traveling with a little one and a dog, so we had many stops. I was also towing my trailer with my 3.slo so you should make it in a much better time than I did. I left at midnight on a Thursday morning, I went as far as I could the first day, found a rest area and slept for a few hours. Then continued on to Castle Rock in time for lunch on Friday. I started a list of suggested items to bring in the first post. Let me know if you think of anything else and I will add it to the list. Here is what I have so far:

So whats the plan for the 12th? When does everyone plan on getting there? Is everyone planning on camping in one general area, or just wherever?

slosurfer
08-23-2007, 07:07 PM
I plan on going out there early Friday (possibly Thursday night) and staking out a general camping area for us. I plan on prerunning the dunes a few times before the event and will have a GPS coordinate for the proposed camp and a decent description of the spot so that those without GPS can find it.

The 12th will be kind of lax and you can do what you want. Depending on who is there in time, we may do a little night run to Garcia Ridge. Oh and probably a nice fire going also. :D It shouldn't be very crowded so the camp should be easy to spot.

There are no campsites, so don't be alarmed that you don't get a number with your reservation.

xonetruthcrewx
08-23-2007, 09:28 PM
Right On. I was just wondering if the spot is going to be out in the dunes or near the Ocean. It would be nice to be by the ocean. The sound of it is relaxing.

Don't worry, you will hear and see the ocean from camp, but it probably won't be down right at the high tide mark. Just a little ways up is good.

Here is a pic from last years trip. You can see how crowded it is in the summer, we will be camped closer to the water than this.

Who would be interested in having Clam Chowder Bread Bowls from Splash Cafe delivered out to us for dinner on Sat.(actually I would go pick it up)? I just got off the phone with Joanne at Splash Cafe and she can cut us a deal, it will be $4.75 per breadbowl (normally $5.70) and she is throwing in all the utensils, napkins, etc... Shirts and hoodies are ordered!

For those that may have missed out or spaced it on the shirts. I may do another round before the event if there is time. Also, after the event, you will be able to purchase them straight from the website.

:( Sadly, from now on everything will be $3.00 more. As of sometime around the end of Aug. Cafepress implemented a $3.00 charge for printing the second side. :spank: :flipoff: Needless to say, I am a little pissed right now. :argue: Too late to search for another tshirt company and too late to change the design.

Have you all selected a CB channel in case those arrive at night need help finding the group? It shouldn't be too hard but it can't hurt.

Justin and I were thinking about driving our bus or possibly borrowing a motorhome and towing the 4Runner. How does it work in Pismo camping with a large vehicle? Is it hard to drive on the sand? I've never been anywhere like this before, any tips would be appreciated.

lower air pressure between 8 and 12 psi and you'll be fine, though i'm not sure about larger motorhomes.

Yeah, i wouldnt lower the tire pressures down on a motorhome like that. I actually have no idea though.

Whatever you bring, you will want to air it down as soon as you get on the beach. There is plenty of packed sand right in the beginning, making for a good spot to air down. I'm not sure, but I think your short bus is a duallie? NOt sure how you will air them down, but I know that the Chevron station has the correct type of nozzle for airing up duallies. Even a motorhome, you will want to air down (probably not nearly as far as 5-10 but way down from what they start at). Unless we get a bunch of rain, there will be no creek crossing to deal with. What size motorhome? Some of them big bus ones, may be too low to take in the sand.

Most of the way to camp is packed sand, so getting there is easy. The only tricky part will be where you pull up into the sand to camp. If you are towing your 4runner with the short bus, the safest bet is to unload the 4runner while you are still on the packed sand. That way you will have less weight with the short bus. Does your short bus have front tow hooks? (or does it just have a bike rack )

slowheelin and I did an improptu prerun for the event. We checked out our proposed camp area and the sand highway. We also ran out to Hi mtn. lookout, did a little bit of Garcia Ridge, and did the last part of hi mtn rd. out to Pozo. I'll have to coordinates and description of our camp area later tonight or tomorrow (whenever I go get my gps out of the 4runner). I'll have pics of the tshirts tomorrow also (I tried to take pics tonight, but the flash was just whiting it all out), they'll photograph better in the morning daylight.

The motor home we are thinking about borrowing is about 30 ft. I'll look go look at it today and take some pictures, ya'll can tell me what you think.

The bus is not a duelly so airing down should be pretty easy if we go that route.

I'm not sure if the bus has front tow hooks. It has no bike rack (although that is a good idea :hillbill: )!
