I've started using my Garmin 60CSX as a trip data collector and evaluation tool. I wanted to find away to overlay my track on Google Earth and found this website http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input?form=googleearth .

You can take your track data after you’ve downloaded it using the program supplied with the GPS and convert it into a .KMZ file type. This is a Google Earth file type.

You can turn your trip into a slide show, color coded to show almost any set of data you can think of.

Attached below is a Ptarmigan hunting trip I went on with a co-worker. We hiked up into a basin just above downtown Juneau. He’d been up there on Labor Day weekend and the Ptarmigan were all over. We knew we’d have to get up pretty high, but I had no idea just how high we’d end up. The Google Earth file is at the bottom.

I didn’t get nearly as many photos as I planned. I kept saying, “I’ll get a pic of that on the way out”. We’ll we didn’t get out of there until twilight and it was pouring… :chair:

Here is a panoramic of the upper basin and my co-worker.

Here is the back side of the basin and my co-worker WAY ahead. He’s practically a Mt. Goat and I couldn’t keep up after 2 hours. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/Erich_870/P9210009.jpg

(He's the orange dot, just left of the snow in the middle of the pic)http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/Erich_870/P9210010.jpg

I followed him up to about the 3000 ft elevation mark and decided to stop and wait for him to come back down. I could see him well above me.

When it started getting late, I signaled and started back down. He had to have been another 1500 feet higher and more than 0.6 miles away at one point. On the way back out it started to rain and we made it back to my rig about an hour after sunset. We had plenty of gear with us and didn’t need our head lamps.

There are several steps to set up the file like I have it.

Click the advaced button under "General map parameters" change "Add time stamps, if possible" to "yes"

Click the advanced button under "Track Options" and set "Colorize by" to "speed" and set "Connect segments" to "yes"

Browse to the gps file and it spits out the .KMZ

I haven't played with many more of the features yet.

I've seen this before, it's really cool. I think it's a good way to really share your trip with those that weren't there.

I agree. I also think it's a very handy tool to recap a trip. For example, it took us 1.5 hours to get up to the basin, so if I did it again, I'd give myself 1.75 hours and not push so hard. It also took us excactly 2 hours to hike all the way out. 3000ft to 600ft elevation.
