View Full Version : Noisy rear coils

Haven't really had the time to diagnose anything so I thought I'd ask for a hand. Seems as though the coils are making a slight noise when being compressed/uncompressed, most noticeable on speed bumps. chatted with blake who thought it could be the spring perches. i pb blasted the top and bottom coil cups and its been mostly fixed, but the sound remains somewhat. my only other guess is that the lack of bumpstops and extended coils is causing a bit of tension under compression. any ideas throw em my way, thanks!

I am in the same boat.
I just chalked it up to having powder coated springs.
I will have to try the PB blaster.
Probably lube up all fittings on the rear, could be the panhard bar squeaking or the links.
Just my .02

bump for ideas. i think i've isolated the noise to the right lc coil but could be wrong. it's pretty sensitive now as well, every time i go over a speed bump i hear it. thanks guys

Do you have the stock lower links?
I have after market ones.
I noticed that they needed to be torqued and lubed.
Now my rear is quiet as a mouse, well as quiet as a rear can get...

loosen, and retorque your links while at ride height (the rear axle sitting on the ground, no jacks).
you might be getting some noise out of the bushings or something.
is the noise a groaning kind of noise? if so, check the rear inner corner of the gas tank skid and see if its hitting the dshaft. mine was, drove me nuts till i figured out what it was. i thought it was the coils making that noise.

Just went outside and played around underneath, I'm 99% sure its the passenger coil. I grabbed both of them and wiggled them pretty hard, the left is snug and makes no noise and the right made a subtle version of the noise I've been hearing and knocked a little bit. Seems to me like the coil isn't completely settled, maybe a rock chip somehow got wedged inside the coil cup..I'm hoping its not the coil thats bad

if the coil was bad, you would most likely see a crack or see a good separation some where on it.
Try taking that spring out and examining it, if it looks good put it back in and make sure its seated the way it should be.
Can't think of anything else really..

alright im kidding, ditto on the links, how old are your springs? were they used when you got them?? care to make a video?

the springs should have close to 100k right now between my known mileage and said mileage from the p.o. I took a cell phone vid, quality is crap but the noise comes out, i just grabbed the hitch and gave it some big tugs, seems to be doing it more during coil expansion rather than compression. I'm going to go back outside while I have a minute and check things out. Feel free to comment

UPDATE: I thought it may have been the shocks since I reused the oem bushings when I upgraded. PB Blastered top and bottom, wobbled the suspension to let it seep in and no effect. Tried it again to the coil, but this time I did top and bottom coil cup and sprayed the hell out of it. The sound is gone unless i really try shaking her. The sound will likely come back in the next couple days. Any ideas would be helpful I'm a bit confused

my guess is there is something between the coil and the bucket that is making the sound, sand or something like that. pull the tires, pull the shock, wrestle the coil out and clean that area really well, clean the coil really well, and maybe apply some lithium grease around the contact area.

Stupid question but,
Do you still have the stock rubber cone up top?
And do you have the little rubber coating that was on the bottom of the spring?
Sounds like metal to metal contact to me and those missing pieces could cause the issue.

The rubber bumpstops are not installed on my car. Unfortunately the recall requires stock suspension for it to be active, I'm not going through the hassle of switching back just for that. The rubber coil wrap is on the top though.
I'm trying to stay away from dropping the rear out because I'm so damn busy lately. When I put them in after the sways and shocks the coils still wouldn't come out, had to use clip-on compressors (scary, i know) just to slide them out. Long story short I barely have time, even less money to have some jagaloon look at it

The rubber bump stops missing could quite possibly be your cause for noise.

see in the springs where the cone comes down?
that is what I am talking about.
You shouldn't have to compress the coils just to get them in and out.
You should just tale the rear and raise it from the pumpkin.
Then take off the tires, unbolt the shocks where they attach to the axle.
Then support the frame with jack stands and then lower the diff.
They should slide right out

EDIT:
Having someone else with me helped isolate the noise. It ended up being my lower link bushings. Dusted with pb blaster and the noise has finally ceased. Just a reference for those who find this through searching with possibly the same problem.
I know what the bumstops are and how to drop my axle, even with shocks and sway end links disco'd a bolt on compressor was required to come out, more disconnecting would be necessary to drop it low enough and the reason behind this thread is partially due to the fact that I don't have enough time to allocate to that.
On the other hand, I did get my cruiser rims on this weekend, center caps from an lx to be painted and put on tomorrow. I'll wait for Blake to post them up but we ended up getting in a wreck yesterday, that's what happens when I decide to take a day off. And as for as the coils, since the pb blaster coat on Friday the sound has yet to come back. We'll see how long this lasts I guess
