it was a hoot. i got a late start friday night after work, had to wire/mount 2 lightforce 240's on the bumper alos fitting a mini skid plate between the bumper and engine skid plate. i pulled in 6am saturday morning, it was cold and wet. i didn't make a reservation in advance that ended up me leaving at 11pm because i couldn't get a camping pass.

i was so tired to take pictures due to lack of sleep, here is the group pic:

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w38/tonniechengca/99%20SR5/DSCN0055.jpg

i was too chicken to try this during daytime:

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w38/tonniechengca/99%20SR5/DSCN0051.jpg

but we did went out for a late night run, the darkness brought up my courage( basically because i couldn't see what the hell i was getting myself into) i did go through some big drops and climbbed some big ridges, at the last one, i was airborn and landed hard while in 2nd gear 4wd Hi wide open throttle, and that lack of experience caused a big cloud of black smoke coming from under the truck, "i think i toasting my brand new marlin clutch"....duh! thanks to fellow members of the group led me out after the clutch cooled down and i made home without a glitch.

i, so as everybody eles had a great time like always, can't appreciate enough of the organizers and sponsor's who made this fun event a reality.

Thanks also to Demello Offroad, Icon Dynamics, Lightforce, Northridge Toyota, Poly Performance and Sand Addiction Magazine for everything. Please make sure to show your support to all of the vendors that helped support this event as they work hard to make sure we enjoy our hobbies!

This year we featured a new event called the GPS challenge. The purpose of the challenge was to locate 5 GPS coordinates which had a challenge buried at each site. Complete the challenge and return back to base camp. We had a handful of challengers but only 2 members successfully locate and complete the challenge. Here were the 5 coordinates that the challengers had to face:

Site #1
N 35.03.527 W 120.38.355
Challenge: What state are we in?

Site #2
N 35.03.697 W 120.37.736
Challenge: SAS or LT?

Site #3
N 35.03.094 W 120.37.271
Challenge: Which came first; the chicken or the egg?

Site #4
N 35.03.226 W 120.36.931
Challenge: 2WD or 4WD?

Site #5
N 35.02.859 W 120.36.735
Challenge: What vehicle are you driving?

*** Site #2 proved to be really difficult to find because this coordinate was located right behind the event logistics booth. You had to literally walk around the camp site to find this spot which proved to be challenging and funny to watch :)

We hope that everyone had a great time out in the dunes. We thank everyone for making this event a great success. We hope that we can expand our GPS challenge next year by adding a few physical challenges this time as well as more participants!

We can't wait until next year and look forward to see all of you again!

The tent connected to the rear of the 4runner. I can swing the tire carrier out and get more room to load and unload stuffs.

I got the "thing"/canopy on the side of the 4runner for $10 at REI garage sale. I don't know what or where it came from. I saw it for 10 bucks and think I make a "poor man" canopy out of it. I didn't completely set it up as far as tie it down good.

I'll have to make this one quick:

Thank you all who came out, braved the wind, and had some fun in the sand! I apologize if I did not get around to meeting with everyone and getting to ride with you all. We plan on adding more event staff next year, so that we will be able to mingle more and ride more. :)

Huge thanks to all of the vendors and members who helped to support this event and insure its success. I am continually impressed with the generosity of the businesses in our sport. Please remember to support these businesses when it comes time to add to your rig.

Lance, thanks for all the help getting this organized and keeping us on track. Also, thanks for getting Chaos Edition out this year. :)

Jenn, thanks for getting the kids prizes set up and passed out.

Jenn, Justin, Dan, Sean, Avy, Sarah, and April, thank you for serving up the clam chowder and letting us use the RV to serve it. This was a huge help and allowed me a little time to get around and chat with everyone.

Milton, thanks for getting us the raffle tix at the last minute! That saved us!

I'm sure there are others that I'm leaving out, so thank you to all!

One last thing, thank you for doing such a great job policing the area for all the trash. I checked when we left and it was very clean. In fact, there was trash in the area when I first set up camp, so we definately left it in better shape.

I hope to see you all next year!

Chris

Well we pulled in about 12:15 last night with some really strong winds. We had an awesome time in Pismo, and it was great to meet everybody.

Thanks to Chris and Lance for putting together such an awesome event!

Also, thanks to Jenn and Justin for being so hospitable to us east coast folks!

I'll post up some pics later, once I can load my pics on the other laptop.

Thanks to Chris, Lance, and people behind the scence to make the event happened. Thanks Jen for the Claim Chowder and toys for the kids. The Claim Chowder was good. It was so windy and I am glad there was Claim Chowder instead of cooking in the wind w/sand.

Finally just got home (Monday at 1pm)..... I left pismo sunday at 10am, with a quick pitstop in modesto and stockton, then headed north again. i made it to Redding before running into over heating issues. in my lack of sleep for the last 5 days mind state, i decided to just pull the thermostat then wait for the RTV to setup..... it ran a lot cooler after that, ie just a hair over C needle... NO heat over the pass and over night. I made it 40 miles into Oregon before i had to stop for a nap. I backed my truck into a big tree (quad anti-theft device) then slept in the cab... not the most comfortable thing ever, mix that with no heat and i wasnt a very happy camper..

BUT overall i had a blast!!!! it was an awesome week/weekend and it was great to put faces with usernames. thanks to everyone for making it well with the 2400+ mile drive. i'll try to get pics up tonight but no promises cuz i have a hot shower and a comfy bed which i havent seen in a week calling my name.

Wow!
What a great time!
Can't wait till next year!

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of the event cause I was to busy driving or BS'ing around.
But I hope to gather enough pics from you folks to make a mini video of the trip.
If anyone did take any vids please PM so I can try to get a hold of those from you to put in the vid.

It was great to meet everyone.
Lance and Chris thanks for the Night ride.
It was awesome up until we had to dig out the F250..
Hope your recovery is quick Lance, and hope you get your suspension tuned quick.
Chris, tell April it was great meeting her for the short time I did.
Hopefully soon we will be able to do more trips once I get out there.

For the rest of the UY family, it was great to meet the west coast branch and hope to see a lot more of you in the future.
Being with everyone felt like home and I really can't wait till next year.

Thanks to all vendors again for you contributions to the event.
I actually have Total Chaos Products to go on Tess!
Just have to get some upper a-arms and sway-away's and then I will be almost as cool as Lance and Bruce, who unfortunately we missed Bruce this year.

Another Huge thanks to Jenn and Justin for the great hospitality, even though they put Dan an I to work, though it was my pleasure since I will be working on them even more in the future.

And to the UY family, it was great to meet a whole new branch of the family.
I hope in the future I will be able to wheel with everyone more.
I felt at home with everyone and can't wait to be a permanent fixture on the west coast.

Again HUGE thanks to everyone and can't wait till next year! w00t w00t!!!

Well so far I am rather disappointed in you guys. I mean, there really hasnt been any good jumping pics yet. Aside from Justin in his truck that is. So what, Bruce and I dont show up and thats it? Hell, if I had been able to come I would have showed you guys up in my Touareg, and it rolling on 20's! Haha. Just kidding. Well, kind of.

Anyways....... looks like I definitely missed out. I was thinking about it the whole weekend. Haha. Hopefully things go as planned and I will be there next year with something long traveled. Not sure what it will be yet, but it will be a Toyota for sure. Very possibly a 07+ Tundra with Total Chaos goodness. I need a full size truck, and why not one with LT. Werd.

I mobbed the van on Sunday (most everyone was gone) due to it being in "hunker down" mode because of the wind on Friday and Saturday. I'll more than likely have just the van out for surf n turf. It did so good out in the sand, had it up to 30 at one point. It was pretty cool to mob past stuck fullsize trucks. Lots of funny looks and smiles from people while driving it.

I did jump the 4runner, a lot! Just not many pics, lol.

xonetruthcrewx
10-13-2008, 08:22 PM
Thats awesome Chris. I used to drive a van just like yours around in high school. Not 4wd though. Im sure that was a good thing however. If it was 4wd I would have tore it up bad, and I would have been in some big trouble. Haha. Oh the times in that van. It did some pretty good donuts in dirt fields. Haha.

My trip report.

I arrived Friday just after lunch and it was way too windy to setup a tent or anything. So we dug some windshielding in front of Mystic's RV rental and spend most of the afternoon hanging out behind or in it (That was a very good idea to get the RV).

Later in the afternoon the wind died down a bit and most folks started coming in. Campsites were setup and the normal festivities took place with food, drink and the normal campfire banter.

Sat morning the weather was pretty good.

So we went out for a group pic.

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6500.JPG

And everyone one was hanging out on the dune for Lance's briefing.

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6509.JPG

This made some people sad

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6510.JPG

And some happy

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6514.JPG

Some dogs took there owners for a walk

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6515.JPG

To relax in the sun

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6520.JPG

Then there were the stray photographers as well

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6533.JPG

While everyone were trying to get into their trucks

We then went out in the dunes, were there were a few trucks stuck and some of the normal fun out on the dunes.

Then there were the Ozzies parking on the dunes to take pix of their trucks stuck on the crest

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6537.JPG

And some more posing

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6547.JPG

We then went back to camp for some lunch. Unfortunately the wind picked up again and Mark, Scott and I decided to head out to Garcia Ridge to escape the wind and sand.

I tucked in my ham antenna to avoid low branches and thus we used CB for comms. I then seemed to loose comms with Scott and Mark, and decided to shoot a poser shot on Garcia while waiting for them to catch up.

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6557.JPG

Fortunately Mark was able to get on the CB eventually and requested me to come back as Scott ran into some trouble on one of the climbs. He pinched his sidewall on a rock and Mark's hi-lift was at camp. It took me a while to get back as the trail is narrow turn around points are limited. Mark and Scott quickly got the flat swapped, once we got some sand out of my hi-lift (note to self , get a cover for the hi-left mechanism).

http://www.ezdries.net/Vidpics/4RJ08/IMG_6561.JPG

We then proceeded to go further up Garcia and covered a number of the hills. Mark and I also switched over to ham radio. As we got to a very nice parking spot on the side of the trail to take pix, Lance was able to contact us on the ham. He was way down South on the dunes and we were way up on Garcia Ridge, about 25 miles apart with plenty of hills and mountains. Very cool !!! After we were informaed that the clam chowder dinner was ready, we decided to stop 2 miles form the end of Garcia and head back.

On the way some folks just had to pose

Back at camp we enjoyed some great chowder fro dinner. The organizers then did the prize draws for the raffles, were Jon won way too many prizes gain :jester: I think we need to audit this next year. As last year there were some very cool prizes, and this time round they were made in bundles for a nicer hamper (and to save time).

The night was rounded of with some more campfire chat and drink, while some folks tried grilling chicken and some other small animals on the campfire :jester: At least we ended the night around 1 am vs 2:15am for Friday :guitar: :guitar:

Sunday morning everyone started packing and cleaning up the campsite. As usual the site was left in better shape than we got it, which shows the quality of folks coming to the event. Most folks decided to part ways and head home, but Masa (and family/friends), Jon and I headed out to Pozo on the Pozo Rd. Pozo Rd is a nice fun drive and the quickest way (mostly) to get there. We also didn't want to hit too much dirt road as there was a minivan with us.

We had a nice picnic out by the fire station on Hi-mountain rd just before the dirt starts. The folks in the minivan headed home, and the rest of us headed up to the lookout tower on Hi-mountain. After a pretty quick drive we found that the gate was closed and we had to hike the last 1/2 mile to the tower.

So we shot some pix from the tower area towards the ocean

Lance's 4th gen looks good. Those trucks really come together when you add some lift and tires.

I already thinking about next year. It was my first time there so I didn't know what to expect. I brought too much "craps" that took me forever to setup camp. I already plan what to take and not to take next year. I will have the Staunt, tires deflators next year. Oh!! stronger skid plate.

Hey Tyler, I know what you mean, when the whole family comes, it's amazing what we bring along. I've cut back but I still bring too much crap. :hillbill: That is one thing that I love about these events, you can check out others setups and learn what will work better for you.

If you don't end up getting the Staun Deflators, you could always go the cheap and easy way. Just get a valve core puller and a good pressure gauge, I suggest a pulller that has a handle like a screwdriver. It makes airing down real fast, just make sure to throw a box of extra valve cores in the glove box in case you lose one.

Now this just makes me so jealous, what I wouldn't give to have wheeling like that around where I live in Toronto. Looks like you all had a great time. If I leave now I might make it there for next year..... :(

There's a guy in LA area who has a ton of these and selling them for $10. Lance picked them up for me and then used them to haul his stuff and the event stuff up here. They were real handy for the event. I ended up using one for the event stuff. I've got to figure out what to do with the other two. :D

I think the guy has to be out of his place soon, so you can contact Lance (goodtimes) and see if he knows what's up. They are huge about 50"x22"x19" If I can find the room, I may see about getting more.

One suggestion for next year, a bigger fire pit to fit more people. The only spot available to sit/stand on St night was in the direct line of the smoke so we fired up another fire to relax around.

Just FYI, the max fire pit size by code is 3x3 and 2 feet tall. and we know how nazi those camp guards are...

Yeah, I agree we'll have a bigger pit next time. They don't worry about that code unless you're being stupid. Next time no vehicles inside the perimeter other than trailers or to drop something off. This will also help us to have a bigger fire. That was my bad as I was unable to be there when the majority showed up and parked inside. No biggie, with the wind, it worked out alright. That way the kids can play in the center and we can have a big fire pit.

They had a nice little article about the Pismo 4runner Jamboree in their News Section.

Not sure if this link will work to the digital mag, but it is on page 14!

I don't want to give another site a plug here, so I'll leave their name off of it

Takeover 2009 will be held at Rausch Creek Off Road Park in Joliet,
PA on July 31st, Aug 1st and 2nd. Three days of wheelin fun.

Camping will be at Rausch Creek this year, as Echo Valley has shot themselves in the foot. Rausch has no showers or running water, so if you're going to need that type of thing, there's a truck stop that has decent showers right down the road. (For a fee)

More info to come as this thing evolves, but I wanted to get the dates up for those people who actually plan things ahead of time.

these are the same boots alaskan fisherman wears on the crab boat 20 hours a day, very comfy. works great for me the last couple years at pismo. it costs $60 but the pair i bought have lasted 6 years and i use them all the time while i'm out fishing, some trips are 5-7 days long.
