Jeremy, first off I've seen your stuff and you do awesome work my friend. Great job on the homemade oven! Looks to be pretty efficient too if you only had 70F on the outside with 400F+ on the inside. Only issue is man I wish you were closer because I'd be sending all sorts of stuff your way, but the shipping from up here (both ways) would probably cost me more than any part I could send would be worth.

Are you sure you don't want to open a location in Canada too? :(

Any one else find it funny that a powder coater, makes an oven that is bare semi rusty metal?? J/K Looks nice.

You might want to paint a spot black and retake the outside temp, or use a contact probe. The temp is probably close to what you measured but the bare metal is reflective to IR pyrometer so it will give somewhat false readings. Key thing is that it is only warm on the outside while "baking hot" on the inside.
Nice Job again.

Very good point.....regardless, the important part is that the inside can still hit 400F to solidify the PC.

Euphorickaty80
04-03-2007, 12:16 PM
Well the outside should stay cool...there is like 4" of high temp insulation between the walls! I was alot of fun to build...We have talked about a bigger oven for quite some time now and its just good to have it finally be done...Now ship yer parts so we can make the money back that we had to shell out on it!!

Yeh I'm gonna sand down the walls and hopefully they don't flash rust again.

The outside of the oven feels the temp when I touch it vs what the thermometer says...I ran it all over the oven, and tested the inside metal after I turned it off and there was a significant difference...like 200* more. Its a good ballpark figure though on the thermometer.

Its just light surface rust from the sheet metal being outside for a couple days until we could get it cut to fit. Nothing a little light sanding wont take care of. Its in a dry environment now so the rust will not come back. Might slap a lil paint on it anyway just to make it purdy :bling:

I may do something with it one day...but for the meantime it causes no issues with anything in the coatings. I will lightly sand it and that may be all. Function over form!

Well the silver covers....the magnesium which is an extremely lightweight metal, took about 10 minutes first coat, then clear coat took about 15 minutes after that to bake. The intake...well the charcoal coat took about 20 minutes to get it up to 400* and bake for 5 minutes of the cure schedule...which is half the time, and the clear coat took about 25 minutes to cook at full 10 minute cure at 400*. It has to get the metal up to 400* all the way through before it starts to fully cure...so if it takes the metal 15 minutes to get up to 400*, then add that to the 10 minute cure cycle thats instructed on the data sheet.

Not quite yet...I got the coating and the oven for it now...but I need to perfect the polishing of it. Messed around with it before but I polished it with a buffer wheel which was a PITA. Gimme a week or so and I'll see what I can come up with. Might pick up some glass media tonight while I am at Northern Tool picking up my blast tips.

Do you need something to practice on? I could drop it off and pick it up towards the end of the month when I come back down that way. I'm not too worried about looks but rather that it doesn't rust up like chrome tends to do. So, if you want one to practice on that it doesn't really matter if it doesn't look great let me know.
