It's time I buy my dream car. You are probably thinking along the lines of Porsche or Ferrari, but you would be wrong. I'm thinking pre-1974 for smog reasons, at least 20 feet long, 400+ cubic inches of carburated, pushrod V8 power--wood paneling would be a definate plus. Fuel mileage is not a concern. I do not wish to do any major repairs, so it should be a good runner and capable of doing a nice "one-tire fryer." Condition is not important at all; this car is going to get dented. Big time. Jumping capability a definite plus. Cost? Think walmart pricing.

Here is one candidate. With only a few feet of overhang front and rear, this one might make a good jumper:

"Will take best offer for our 1972 Ford LTD. Last licensed in 1984 and had been stored in barn until last year when these photos were taken. Has been worn some by the sun since. Interior in good shape. V8 engine with only 58,000 original miles on it, started right up when we moved it. Great project."

http://images.craigslist.org/11512114b3m83o23l88be32fe12f050f21e32.jpghttp://images.craigslist.org/1101f114a3n43k23o58bea4994fdecc2d176a.jpg

It sort of has that look I am going for--big and angry. I also like the "best offer" pricing. I can't imagine people are lining up out the door for a car like this.

Another one--a Cadillac, the American dream:

selling 1969 cadillac coupe de ville runs great has new transmission new radiator
new catalytic converter new battery looking to sell for $1500 obo this car is smog exempt and it has brand new 2009 tags so you only have to pay the transfer fee and no smog ever and runs great so come get it ! just the tranny is worth almost as much as i am asking ."

http://images.craigslist.org/1241391483me3pf3o98bgbe6622a17c801141.jpghttp://images.craigslist.org/1471g91383n63mc3l78bgfb9b015f6a9013e3.jpg
http://images.craigslist.org/1231351g93k03m13l28bgb0251bab647516d7.jpg

I like the look of this one too. It looks pissed off just sitting there.

If you find something good, post it up. Keep in mind that I am in Central California, so at 3-4 MPG, a car like this would be considered "totaled" if I had to drive more than about 100 miles to pick it up.

Alright so I have to ask for what purpose is this car being purchased. Looks fun.

 My initial plan was to take it to Prairie City OHV to "break it in," however I know myself too well and it is very likely the car would never leave the place under its own power. I want more than a one-time-use. So I thought I would start with some pavement challenges such as a few laps at Willow Springs Raceway. I used to take my Supra Turbo to Sac Raceway all the time--figured it would be fun to make some passes in something a little different. :) Either car I posted either would be quite an eye-opener at an SCCA auto-cross event too.

Realistically I'll keep it on the pavement for a while and find new and exciting ways to mess it up. After she has gotten some street time and the rods start knockin', I will start documenting (on Ultimateyota) it's offroad prowess and the trials and tribulations of offroading and jumping a 6,500 pound lead sled. I plan to stock up on bailing wire and duct tape. This car is probably going to have a limited lifespan. My gas and oil bill will be affected. Resale will be N/A.

11-19-2008, 07:23 PM
Oh man Chris, there were some fine cars in there! One thing I forgot to mention--I am a car enthusiast and as such will not destroy a classic. Most 70s cars are total crap, so I am sort-of targeting that era. The Nova and LTD you posted are right up my alley!

Lance--I'm in Sacramento. So technically, yes, norcal.

How do you think this car would do on Saline Valley Road in Death Valley? Think it would make it up Mengel Pass with some speed? :D

paddlenbike
11-19-2008, 07:32 PM
I would never abandon a car...is there actually a legal dumpsite there? I will need a chase vehicle to follow me through the desert to pick up all the parts that fall off.

I was planning on using the beater to tow the 4runner to DV...then use the 4Runner to tow whatever was left of the beater to the recycler.

Look so many replies already.

Last night Ken was over and we had at his IAC and did a little cleaning. Before the night was over my wife called me out and said I didn't have the balls to buy and drive around a "beater." Problem is that I'd like to teach her not to mess with me. There are a few gems up here but some are asking $1000+ which is out of my price range. I'm thinking that this "car" will be used for dump runs, Christmas tree get'n, shoot'n/hunt'n, and beer runs. I imagine there will be the trips to the race track as well.

One of my concerns would be the neighbors. I'd be bummed if my neighbor bought a real looker and had it parked out front.
