So I did an oil change today. Same way I always have. At the end I checked the dip stick and only the very very tip has any oil on it. What gives? I put a little more than I usually do, almost 5 quarts, and still only the tip. I checked and the dip stick tube is installed correctly and the dip stick seats properly. I don't want to over fill it but I don't want to do any damage. What do you guys think?

Quit pouring your oil in the tranny dipstick.

i believe in the v6, the change is 5.2 quarts (that's what i refill to, anyway- and it's usually in the middle of the dipstick reading)

It's pretty hard to overfill the 3.4L enigne. I usually put in a full 6 qts when I do an oil change because the filter will fill with oil and I fill it to the upper mark on the dipstick too. I'm also using a Ford Taurus 3.0L filter so it's a bit larger than stock. Make sure you are starting the engine, let it idle, then stop and check the oil level after or you may not be seeing the proper level.
If you're checking the tranny fluid, make sure the engine is running when you check the dipstick's level.

Go by what the dipstick says, not what the manual says.

It's weird because I've always put less than 5 quarts in and it's fine. I guess I'll put some more.

I don't think I've ever seen that anywhere, mostly 4.7 or so.

Did you do anything different this oil change. Like do it hot, or leave the drain plug out for and extended time.

Everything was the same. Oil pan hasn't even been clearanced but rocks, etc.
Today on the way to get more oil I remembered making a big mess the first time I changed the oil on it. I pulled the drain plug and let it drain into my oil bucket thingy. It made a mess because it overflowed the container, it's a 7 quart. I was perplexed because I know I wasn't supposed to put that much back in. Now every time since then I have noticed that it does fill that 7 quart pan pretty high, more than 5 quarts. Maybe I've been a bad owner ( :drink:) and never paid enough attention.
Sorry 4Runner, I'll be better now.
