What are the hot gifts for kids this year?
Our kids are after iPod Nanos, Wii games, digital cameras, dvds and player jerseys (nfl, nba, and mlb). Fending off the cell phone requests this year (and the month cost - aka the gift that keeps on giving :shake:)
What else is hot this year?
(My kids are 10, 8 and 7 - qualify your post with kids ages pls.)
EDIT: all BOYS!!

gender would obviously help too!
personally, i always liked toys that kept on giving. Lego's, erector sets, etc. there are TONS of new ones out there now days. i still play with those toys, some 10 years later! also stuff that is remotely educational is good, but nothing too much, then it gets BORING! i think the oldest might be ready to start welding, how about a helmet and accessories.
stuff that gets them outside is nice too! kids are too fat these days, and im one of them. new bikes, skateboards, etc. but only if you have good medical insurance! haha.

Check the lego website, lots of cool stuff nowadays. At least it gives them some insight how things are put together, especially with the technical sets.

We don't care about the hottest toys-or usually for them, but for a
5 year old boy:
legos
blokus
pretend food preparation kits (melissa & doug)
cash register
construction trucks
twistables crayons
paper
books about dinosaurs, robots, vehicles, how things work
playmobile anything
cool horns or bells for the bike
bomber hat

i believe that's called a RipStick though there may be other brands that make them under different names.

C'Mon...how about the Nintendo DS w/ Bonus Pack and the Lego Indiana Jones Kit! :D
*There's also Star Wars(*Lightsaber Stylus :D ), Final Fantasy...

In our case, we popped for the BrainAge Kit, gotta do the "Good Uncle" part if we're getting a game kit for the brats. :D
All 3 of them have DS's already - no Indiana Jone or Lego games, but have BrainAge and FlashFocus plus boat loads of others. Oddly, they asked for Wii games over DS games this year - we're got to have at least 20 games so far.
iTunes gift cards are a good call - hadn't thought of that...

We were in DC for Thanksgiving - their younger cousins had Plasmacars (http://www.toychute.com/plasmacar.html?AffID=157&gclid=CMzV1suJnZcCFQwDGgodk1Ch9g). They loved them, so we'll probably bite the bullet and get some of those.
They have a skateboard that they don't really use, so I fear a Ripstick would sit also. Although, my most active son's birthday is in Feb, so maybe it will be time to try one with him - just in time for the weather to break into Spring.

This weekend my step-daughter found that certain i-tunes cards won't work with certain i-pods. She's apparently got an older model, bought a card that only works on newer models and can't download anything on her i-pod. Out $10 and can't even give it to a friend because it's now registered to her i-pod.
Just food for thought.

Just an FYI, my wife said that a teacher at my son's preschool bought a couple of these for the school and they didn't last a week before they were destroyed.

Hmmm, my kids flogged them for 3 days straight and they showed no signs of problems. My wife and her brother were even riding them and my BIL is 200+ lbs.

That's kind of what I figured. Never underestimate the destructive force of a bunch of 4yr. olds.
I swear, Jack could work for one of those places that tests the breaking point of stuff.

I dunno how your kids like building things, but I always liked Legos, especially the Lego Technics. Still have all of them, somewhere buried under junk at my parents' house. Some of the more complex sets have motors and whatnot, and would make for a great father/son project. They even have the new Mindstorms robots that you can build and program using you computer. Legos were all I ever asked for, so other than that, I'm clueless.
I always thought a pin ball machine would be neat, but from what I've seen, they are super expensive.
There are some deals on the Lego website at http://shop.lego.com/SalesAndDeals/
