Well sort of.

The Chinese company, Great Wall Motors, has been building models using the 2nd gen 4runner and 3rd gen pickup tooling, along with tooling from other manufactures such as Isuzu, Suzuki, Nissan, and others.

The 4Runner is now known as the "Safe", and the pickup is known as the "Deer". All models have upgraded interiors, taillights, and front fascias, but the overall body lines are identical to the Toyota models. The frames, engines, and other mechanical parts appear to be build by Great Wall Motors, or are sources from other vehicle manufactures.

That's crazy. I like it! The updates they did to the 2nd gen 4Runner really do make it look 2009-modern. I have always thought 4runners had pretty timeless designs.

well they are probably going to be really cheap to buy and will probably sell like hot cakes. very smart on there part to clone popular vehicles. thats a page right out of Hyundai's book, but using the actual tooling is the next level lol

It says that it has Gear rack integral power steering. I wonder if that could be retrofitted to our 2nd gens and get rid of the weak steering. :wrenchin: Of course, it is made in China, so......

Rack-n-Pinion steering has no place in the offroad community, period. I see so many friends blowing them apart, case enough as to why John switched over to a box and psc on his Taco.

Well, the third gen 4runners and tacos, their steering seems to hold up better than our bendy idlers/plastic bushings, etc... I don't know who John is. :)

i wouldnt be so sure about that. lots of us wheel our 3rd and 4th gens HARD. i dont hear of steering components failing left and right like you are saying.

Based on the picture above, many of the components look different than my 4Runner. Even the gas tank is on the opposite side, although the filler neck goes out to the left side like the 4Runner. The website also says the floor of the cab has been lowered 40mm. What they are comparing that measurement to, I don't know, but I wonder if this would require a lower frame than the 4Runner as well.

Yep, from my understanding, the Safe and Deer were GWM's first vehicles offered. They have grown tremendously, and were the first automobile manufacturer to be listed on the Chinese stock market.

Not only have the Chinese been retooling for the automobile industry, but in the aviation industry as well. The ARJ 21-700 is a newly developed ~70 seat commercial airliner that is currently undergoing the certification process. The ARJ is built using McDonald Douglas tooling, and the plane looks very similar to the MD-90. The wings are built by the Russian aviation company Antonov, engines are from CFM (same manufacture that supplies engines for the 737 and A320), and the plane has western avionics.

I'd like to see if some of the components such as the dash, headlights, and taillights would fit. Sure would make for an interesting 4Runner. I'm sure the taillights would fit, although it would probably require a some playing around with the wires.

Oh, and supposedly, the Safe can be purchased for under $12,000 US. :D

the wheels on the "safe" look very much like nissan xterra wheels...

these just look like knock offs of all other import suvs, i doubt they share much if anything with our yotas. and its bad enough we support japan, nevermind china, and not the US for our vehicle needs :D
