View Full Version : Christmas at Shaver Lake, CA (w/ carnage pics)

My parents rented a house for the whole family at Shaver Lake for Christmas this year. My parents, my brother with his wife and 3 kids, my fam, and my grandparents all in one house for a week. :yikes:

They all came up Sunday, while we came up Monday evening due to my work schedule. Our excitement happened before we were even in the door. The cabin has a slightly sloped driveway with a flat spot for parking where it turns and goes steeply up the rest of the way to the house. It had been snowing before for a couple days, but not much that day. They had no problem backing all the way up to the house to unload and then going back down and parking in the flat spot. Well we get there late monday night and I pull into the flat spot (4lo), turn, and back up the driveway. Things are a little slick but don't seem bad. I get all the way up no problem and only need to go another foot to have the rear be on the flat part right in front of the garage. My tires break loose, I start to slide forward, and I put on the brake, only to have the tacoma just slide down the hill. I immediately let off the brake, and just let it idle in R as I slide down the driveway straight for my bro's Tundra. Steering is useless, and it's just a matter of seeing where we hit. It looks like it will be my driver front bumper to his passenger front bumper. First thought through my head, looks like my bro and I will be getting offroad bumpers now. Right before I'm there, I give it gas to spin the tires in the hope that they will allow the tacoma to slide a little sideways with the fall of the driveway. It worked, haha! If you looked at the tire tracks, you can't figure out how I missed his truck. It was that close! April was :yikes: and I was  My dad comes out talking crap as he's starting to walk down the driveway, saying, "I thought that thing had lockers, we've been driving up and down it all day." I tell him "it's ice, lockers won't help" :flipoff:. The words were barely out of my mouth, and he's slipping and sliding and trying not to bust his ass. He couldn't believe it, he said they were driving up and down it all day, walking up and down it, even the little kids were walking on it and sledding on it. We had to walk up the side in the snow as it was impossible to walk on. We all laughed, I just parked the tacoma in the flat area next to the other vehicles, and we carried what we needed in and left the rest for the morning.

It started snowing right after that and didn't really stop till last night. Probably got close to 2' if not more. The kids had a blast and we made some killer sled runs for them, complete with banked turns and jumps.

Yesterday afternoon, I was getting cabin fever, so I decided to drive into town to get some more beer and beat the boredom. My dad went with me. Well, the plow had plowed in the driveway, I decided I could drive over it. :) I was in the tacoma, so I didn't want to gun it like I would have had it been the 4runner which sits up much higher. So, instead, I took it easy and got it high centered. Ha, boredom, you have been beat!!! We tried to dig it out some, aired down, etc.., when that didn't work, my dad went up and got his 08 Landcruiser to try to pull me back into the driveway and then we could dig out the driveway and leave. Well, since the driveway was slightly sloped, and my dad haveing to pull in reverse, it just wasn't working. A neighbour came over and pulled me out from the front with his 04 4runner, so that was cool. The only bummer about all of this was the blizzard that was going on when I first got stuck. Went out, got our beer, and made it back with no incident, funny thing is, we didn't even need beer. I did get some good Moose Drool Ale though which was awesome!

Today rolls around and it's sunny and nice. We decide to go for a drive and get out of the house for awhile. Plow plowed us in again, bastard, but it wasn't as bad and we had the entrance dug out pretty quick. On the way down the street, I pulled some people out in their 2wd exploder that had been plowed in as well. They ended up busting a chain in the process and I was able to zip tie the busted links to the side and gave them extra zipties incase those broke. Nice mom with I'm guessing her teenagers and their friends (too bad I wasn't younger, they were all hot, haha). Turns out they are from the same area as us and had rented a house as well. They were very happy and offered to babysit for us if we needed it at all while we're up here.

We hit up the road to Dinkey creek and drove to the end, kids fell asleep, so we kept driving. We went back to shaver and then took the road over to Big Creek to see what was there. Cool little town that just has a general store and a power plant. Jack and I played in the snow some and then we headed back.

On the way back, we were going up hill and on the outside of a corner (the dropoff side as well), when a chevy coming downhill didn't make the corner and hit us. I saw him coming and gave it more gas and got over as much as I could (not much room, no shoulder and we were up against a 4ft. snow bank from it being plowed. It wasn't enough and he hit us, mostly on the bed, but did get the cab/rear driverside door some. It was slow motion and for a split second, I thought he was going to sneak it by. Kids seem fine, I'm fine, but April is having some neck and back pain. I think she turned in her seat some to look at the truck coming and tensed up. We didn't spin, as we were up against the snow to begin with, he hit us and the rear just nailed the snowbank.

It seems to drive fine and straight (although we'll see once we get off of snowy roads and hit freeway speeds). The rear tire got hit, but it seems fine and there is no noticeable wobble when watching it while driving. He got the rear door barely, the rear bottom of the cab, the whole side of the bed, and the rear bumper. The camper shell seems fine as it was high enough and doesn't seem to have shifted or anything. He only got a pushed in and bent bumper. He was very apologetic (young kid 20 yrs old), just going a tad too fast, and I think he tapped the brakes when he saw us coming around the turn, since he was a little wide on his turn, and the ice, made him lose traction. He was in 4hi, so it was just pretty unlucky. I'm hoping April's neck and back pain are gone in the morning. Oh, and we have to buy new carseats, since these have been in an accident. :(

So, now we have to do the whole insurance thing and who knows how long we'll be without the tacoma. We'll have to get a rental, as I don't want april having to drive the kids around for a long time in the 4runner with no swaybars. I'm hoping to get a good look underneath tomorrow as it was almost dark when we got back and with all the ice and stuff under there it was hard to see. I do know that the elocker still works. :)

Anyways, on to the pics. I'll try to get better pics, the combo of silver truck, snow, and cloud cover wash away a lot of the detail.

Cliffnotes: Shenanigans at a cabin in the snow for xmas, the tacoma got hit by a chevy k20, April has neck and back pains, pics of carnage to follow. :)

I'll post happy and cool pics from the trip a little later (photobucket is sucking right now).

I probably won't get a really good look at it till Sunday when we get home and all the ice and crap is off it. Hopefully I can check the underneath more tomorrow, I think it's supposed to be sunny.

So, anyone have pics/links for good rear bumpers? :D

yipes! what an adventure!

Hope April recovers smoothly w/o any problems. The Tacoma looks like it survived nicely. Appears to only have cosmetic damages and it looks like a nice time to get some aftermarket bumpers ;)

Demello / CBI to name a few. I know there's another shop out mid west I think that does a pretty clean setup. (ttora as usual would have all of the goodies!)

I'd check the rear part of the frame as well as the distance between the cabin and bed. Also make sure the frame didn't get tweaked (though I doubt it). The suspension should be fine unless the frame is out of whack.

Make sure you guys get a nice rental (i.e. minivan ;) haha)

hey chris,

glad everyone is alright. i have something for little jack for christmas. i have to make time to get out to you now like i said...err...months ago!

funny, me and patty got hit too on dec 20th in the OC. a gardner clipped the front of her lexus. fortunately i was driving and did some craaaazy asian s##t to avoid what could have been a head on collision. patty got some estimates for it and its coming out to be aroudn 1500 to 2000 bucks. damn dude, i'll just go to the junkyard and salvage the parts for 10% of that!

Yeah, the tacoma took it pretty well. Everything still works (minus the tailgate not going all the way down for obvious reasons), and it seems to drive fine. Like you said, just need to make sure the frame is fine, as the rest is cosmetic. It's a bummer he hit the cab, as that would have been much less time and $$. I'll get it parked on some flat blacktop tomorrow so I can get a better look at it.

I'm really hoping April feels better in the morning. She's been on Advil and wine tonight. :(

Definately going for a nice rental. :)

Bob, oh that's cool, Jack will love that! Haha, no worries, take your time, he likes getting stuff in the mail.

Bummer about you guys getting hit as well. I lol'd at "did some craaaazy asian s##t" It will be interesting to see what the estimate will be on this. He's lucky his ass end didnt' swing over and hit my whole side.

I'll get some kid pics and truck pics up here soon. I only have a few kids pics on my camera, but april got some good ones. No pics of the tacoma stuck though, as it was pretty nasty out and I didn't want to pull my gloves off to dig the camera out. lol

Haha, I just got done reading that whole thread. I do know that it will have to have a 2" receiver built into it for hauling the m416. I told April that had we had sliders installed, he would have hit the slider. That would have probably knocked the rest of the truck out of the way. So maybe April will get sliders for valentines day or something.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. April was feeling slightly better yesterday, so hopefully better today. I guess I had the added benefit of holding onto the steering wheel which probably braced me better than her.

We'll load up this morning (going to be a PITA, since I can't lower the tailgate) and head home. I should be able to see better how bad the bed is tweaked once it's cleaned and all the snow and ice is off it. As it is now, the bedside is touching the cab on the bottom driverside.

I had to smile when I started reading this. Since I'm now officially a resident of the Chicago Suburbs I have had a crash course in ice and snow plows. Yep... driving on it all day... that is exactly how you turn snow into ice. I have learned that the hard way when I tried to shovel the drive way after driving on the snow. Now I park in the street and shovel first.

Well man I hope April is Ok too.

Funny, you left SoCal to head to the snow, I left Chicago and drove to SoCal. Claire, our new dog Ginger, and I leave for the midwest the 3rd but are enjoying the sunshine in Vista at my parent's place.

I don't have any pics like that and hope it stays that way since we are in the Vue. It's a great road trip vehicle and has loads of power but is not the 4runner.

Have a great new year!

Haha, if you buy some for me, I'll glady get rid of them. I'm not throwing away a good set of tires. :hillbill: They've been fine for anything I'm willing to do in the tacoma, but I'll definately be getting something else when the time comes for new tires. Plus, I'm not allowed to mod (aka spend money for offroad stuff) on the tacoma.

I am glad your having luck with them, cause I didn't
I got horrible wear and the traction was horrid for me
I think I lost all blood flow to my hands everytime it rained or snowed,
I was so scared to drive on them...

Verdict on you broken shiz??

It's dented

Seriously though, we got home last night, I switched from snowpants to shorts; and proceeded to rearrange the vehicles in the driveway (which required reconnecting some stuff so that they wouldn't be stolen while we were gone) and then had to go to SLO to pick up our dog at the kennel. Then I had to go meet with a customer about a job. So, I haven't had a chance to look real good since I've been home.

It seemed to drive and track fine, so I think the rear axle is fine. It's hard to tell if the whole bed is racked or just the bedside. I know it bent the built in storage area on that side, I'll have to really check out the composite bed mounting bolts and surrounding area. Loading the truck was a beatch with the tailgate not being able to open much. I'm going to check today to see if it swings down enough to allow me to remove it if need be. Once it gets looked at, I'll try to bend the bumper back down. That sucker is stronger than I thought, me and my dad were bouncing on it and it wouldn't budge.

Also, we now have to go get new carseats. :(

..Also, we now have to go get new carseats. :(

Backrest's broke/cracked where the seatbelts pass through on impact??

No, the carseats are fine, but it's a law that we have to get new ones since they were in an accidents (hence, the cutting of the belts on them so they don't get resold somewhere). Some friends of ours recently took a trip to SF without their kids and they were in a minor fender bender. Even without the kids in the carseats, they still had to get new carseats. It's no biggie, since it will be covered by the insurance, but it still is a PITA.

We'll start getting estimates now and go from there. Anyone have a driverside bedside for an 07 DCab shortbed? :D

So, the other guy's insurance is sending out an adjuster later today. The other guy was a standup guy and admitted fault so no shenanigans.

Technically, we don't even need to be here for the adjuster, but I want to be. Any advice on what to tell them to make sure they get everything? Any other advice on how to deal with them?

I still plan on going to get estimates at the shops I've heard good things about before I accept any offers. Just to make sure they are not low balling me.

I would really like to get a rental car while it is fixed as well. Should I hide the 4runner, so they don't say that April could just use that one?

slosurfer
01-07-2009, 10:17 AM
Shane, thanks! I did get that pm and thank you for the heads up. I'll have to wait to see what the body shops have to say once they get a good look at it. I may have a line on a bedside (actually bedsides).

So far as I can tell, the bed is good to go. It is the composite bed, so there are no stress marks or cracks. The only thing is the built in storage box on that side got bent down and it cracked around its mounting bolts. But that looks like something that could be bought on its own and replaced since it's bolted into the bed.

I'll check around for a Lexus body shop. :D

It is really hard to see how an adjustor can get a good handle on the damage. For example, my taillight looks fine, but it's loose. You can't tell if it broke on the bedside of how it attaches or on the taillight side till you remove it.

He should be here any minute now. :)

You want me to have Raquel post-up to help convince April of the "Necessary Mods"..ERM, I mean "repairs"? :D
FWIW..The other driver's Insurance will most likely end up saving money compared to factory parts anyhow.

Haha, nah, the only mod will be the rear bumper. In fact, I want to still keep the spare in the stock location. So, no swingouts, gas carriers, etc... (at least not for awhile ;) )

Most the parts the other driver's insurance quoted me for were factory parts, and they are not cheap. :yikes: Their adjuster was very thorough, and spent almost 3 hrs going over the truck with me. I asked a lot of questions.

Some updates on the tacoma:

1. I have a good complete fender (a takeoff) but it is white, so it will need to be painted. Huge thanks to Lance for picking it up from the seller and storing it for me and huge thanks to Milton for picking it up and delivering it. Total cost $300

2. I went ahead and straightened out the bumper some so that we could at least use the tailgate (this was actually awhile ago). My bodywork skills aren't great. That bumper is tougher than I thought. Took making a big cut in it with my sawsall to be able to bend it down. Looks slightly better and at least we can open the tailgate.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e113/slosurfer27/Trips/Shaver%20Lake%20Dec08/IMG_8373.jpg

3. Bought a good takeoff bumper from Demello. Thanks again to Lance for picking it up and delivering it to me at Kings Cyn. Total cost $20 This bumper is actually in better shape than our original one was. I was planning on getting the original one replaced prior to the accident because it was starting to rust in a few spots and it had started UNDER the chrome.

4. Got the "new" bumper installed and I pulled the fender out a bit to look more normal and banged out a few of the dents so now it looks slightly better. I could put the white fender on, but honestly it will be better to wait till I get it painted. I think the truck would look worse with a nice new white fender. Truck looks much better now and some of April's friends have even noticed that her truck looks better. :D Here are some before and after pics:

After: (hard to tell, but the fender is pulled back out just about to where it should be in relation to the tire)

Next step is to get the fender painted and that will take care of the rear of the truck. The dent on the cab, I may see if I can get it pulled out by one of those dent repair dudes. Then I'm going to see about Rhino Lining the rocker panels which will cover that spot and be a useful mod, rather than getting just about the whole cab painted.

I stripped the old bumper down to see what was salvagable. Not much was. I did get a bunch of bolts off it to throw in my misc bolt bag for trail repairs. The only things that were 100% good on it were the the side top plastic things. If anyone needs them. Let me know, just pay the shipping and they're yours. The main plastic piece is good on top but is missing clips on the side that was hit.
