What kind of cameras are you all using?

I have a Canon SD450, and I really like it. Only problem though, is that when I take dark shots, the pictures sometimes come out blurry or grainy. :(

I think I'm going to have to upgrade to something along those lines when I get a more steady job. My camera doesn't cut it for the darker shots.

Believe it or not, Canon Digital Elph SD750. The mega pixel range does make up a little from the grainyness of the 450. Everything else comes down to knowing your setting options. Play a little with the color enhance or color swap options, as well as the light choices, for richer blues, I'll switch from ambient light to flourescent then do a color swap or enhance on a green or red following the color wheel rules.

The next tip is take way more shots than you need to and experiment, logging down the changes for reference later.

Here's that same Tahoe Sunset with the changes I tried in the next two shots I took..

*Using my taillight I enhanced the red..
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2452/3905304097_5e05c7c290_b.jpg

*Using my wife's purple socks, I upped the red-blue (purple)..
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2498/3906083252_879f4587b7_b.jpg

I use a mac, and I-Photo, honestly for what I do that's enough. You can play with the contrast, tint, saturation and exposure times, then even color boost to get effects. Just make sure you keep the original so you can always go back to it. **Also, you can always save a pushed picture, then go back and push it some more.

Obi..
09-09-2009, 09:37 PM
*I forgot to mention, if learning these, always try to learn with Sunrises first, as the amount of dust/pollution fall (rain/orbs) is less likely to occur. When I do Sunsets, I always use an enclosure whenever possible, or worst case a hood of some sort (read: Business card taped over the top of the lens) to cut out most if not all of the misreads that can occur. (Like camera senses an object really close vs. far off.) Also, when soft touching the shutter release button to point the focus, go for the furthest off you can get, even if you keep triggering a local object, lift to like a bird, cloud, far off tree, whatever to fix your range. I have been seen "Off-Focusing" (*I think it's referred to as) doing an initial focus, and while keeping the soft touch on, switching out to let the camera refocus, then bring back and shoot, keeping it from going back to the initial focus giving a better infinite focus.

Try this one Daniel, be sure you have a tripod.

Three early morning shots, all around 5 minutes to Sunrise, flash switched to off, and on full auto and using my windshield sun reflector parts, created an isolated space to only sense the light in front of me instead of around me. I then stitched the 3 shots together, and saved the original panoramic created. I used one for the mostly blue one and on this one, instead of the low color range I then dropped the exposure, balanced the brightness, upped the contrast, increased the temperature and the saturation. When playing like this watch the R-G-B graph to push to the balance you are looking for.

Sierra Sunrise..
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3486/3905328477_ca0ba17d50_b.jpg

The R-G-B I used to process the shot.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3528/3906121566_e01c5b60e2_b.jpg

*Note, like I said above, now that I have a unique shot saved, separate from the original, I can go back in and again play all I want with the contrast/etc. I'm pretty sure the basics I use are available on most camera programs, I'm sure I have them on my Canon Image Browser and Studio, I just prefer the I-Photo.

Consider trying out Picassa (http://picasa.google.com) it's pretty user friendly.

Then you can try multiple image layers and go hardcore!

Oh and I currently have a Canon Rebel Xs but want to upgrade to a T2i. And believe it or not the first couple pics are with a Canon A530.

Awesome Pictures! I've been thinking about upgrading to a Rebel Xsi or similar. I really want to get a better camera.

some_odd_girl

My only advice about upgrading is if you've never had a DSLR before, make sure you learn how to use it - using that kind of camera on auto really isn't worth the money. And I hope that statement doesn't piss anybody off. lol.

haha, ya i don't even have a dSLR (yet) and seeing people use them on auto bugs me :-P ... you can get better pictures with a cheaper camera using some manual settings than you can get on a dSLR on auto...

One of my complaints with my Canon point-and-shoot is the horrible night photos it takes. It's not even worth trying, even when it's just dusk out. I've gone through all the manual settings and nothing seems to work well. It is 4 years old though, so maybe it's just time for a new one. :D

Me and a couple of the other local photographers are playing a game of "Photo Tag" where you have to re-shoot someone else's shoot. I cheated and re-shot a re-shoot just to prove I could still do my own shots better. ;)

Which one do you have? cuz my Canon A530 took decent night photos (as long as your using a tripod :-P) My moms A580 takes pretty good ones, but its a lot newer tech too.

I have the SD450 Digital Elph. It's old. I think one of the problems is that it has no image stabilization, and I don't have a tripod for it. I dunno. That's my only complaint. It takes great pictures otherwise.

The A530 doesn't have image stabilization either, and I got some great photos with it - even with the camera I had before that I could get some decent ones at night...

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic. I know I want to definitely throw these into this thread..pardon the pixelation, flickr's downgraded their quality of uploads on the free use stuff recently.

!In actuality the both of them (first two) were taken for someone specific in mind, the Father at our Church. He said something very poignant recently about how people view people, specificly, people like him that are perceived weird because he likes, rather loves it when it rains and storms. I'm the same way, rain actually makes me very happy and full of memories of certain things, so I know that when I print them both up as an Easter present for him, he'll "Get it".
