Wow,
Its been a while since I have done a major modification to Tess.
Well yesterday came the day that I finally got her done!

Back in August for my b-day I got lots of $$$ for my b-day.
Well, to treat myself, besides some :drink: :drink: :drink:, I decided with that money, I bought the pair of diffs that Wab was selling.
They are 4.30 geared diffs, and the rear has an e-locker! WOOT! WOOT!

Also with it came the ECU and switch for it.

Here is a really cheesy pic of me, ecstatic that I finally have my toys:

When I finally got them in the mail a few weeks ago (maybe more...)
I loaded them in the back of the truck when they came in and I about made the truck sit level again...

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/Nighthief/4Runner/Diff%20change/IMG01510.jpg
So I unloaded them in my room and there they stayed till yesterday.

The front was a breeze to do.
Disconnected the lower ball joints and pulled the cv's out
Took off the 3 bolts that hold the 3rd in
Unhooked all hoses and plugs
Finagled out the old diff
Switched over mounts and vacuum actuator
Finagled it back in
Attached hoses and plug
Filled with fluid
Done

The rear was a different story.
Unbolted everything got the third out.
Got the old inner axle seals out and replaced those.
My friend modified the housing
Though it needs a few tweaks.
For some reason the studs would just not line up right
So we are going to go back, weld the holes and realign it
(Used gasket for notch, and the diff to mark for where we needed to drill and it was still stubborn.)
Put shafts back in.
Before putting the tires back on and bleeding brakes and going I wanted to clean and adjust the drums.
I HATE DRUMS!!!
took me 20 min a side, and the one side was caked....
Cleaned everything up, and adjusted them.
Still need adjustment but not it doesn't seize or not work (right side didn't work at all and the left was way too tight...)
Put tires back on
Bleed Brakes
Shifted fork over manually to lock (waiting on Sean for his wiring genius)
Filled diff
Done

Took it for a test drive in the 1/4" of Ice we got here in SE PA and WHOO HOO!!!
The 4.30 are nice for city and back road driving, on the highway however it is a little on the high side in RPM, hopefully that will change when I bump up tire size.

I am so happy right.
Every time I get in the truck I just grin cheek to cheek.
Once I see the button installed though, then it will be complete and I might just shed tears of joy!

Pics to come later.
Just to tired and had a long day today after the long work yesterday...

Fix the damned steering rack now..

Glad you got it done, bumping sizes wont help ya much. I got 4.30s and the bigger tires now and its no different.

Good deal Avy!!

Gald to hear Tess is getting some love, and some nice new parts, bout time that diff I half pulled should get used. :) (I did sell the '97 that the shafts went into by the way)

...Hey, if you think those 4.30's are bad on the highway, you should try my 5.29's. lol. Especially in my 22R (which has a hard enough time revving high enough to make highway speeds anyway)

Now that I got a god damn shop to do it in I will!
And seriously I noticed the difference.
I guess I am too obsessed watching the tach.

If you sold the 97 take it out of your sig :P
Yeah like I said I will get use to it.
Its only a 200-300 more then was before,
I am just really particular and noticed it...

congrats man

just fyi, a locked rear isnt helpful in ice or snow really. it isnt any harder or worse, but it isnt a benefit... at least not that i found. if anything it makes it push your truck around.

i used to have a full time locker (lockrite) in my 01 and used to push the rear end out sometimes. :)

Oh I know it isn't helpful in snow or ice,
but it sure is fun!

I just needed it for the trails :-)

Are you going to make it down this year for Northeast takeover?

Hey Long time no see dude!
How have you been?
Hows the little one?

Hows your runner doing besides being jealous?
and I just noticed in your sig your running 275/65/16,
what do you think of the tire size?

What I meant was I noticed the tach changed alittle, but the powerloss was felt on the T100 with the larger tiresand like you said I somehow have 5hp more than you or so lol.. So yours is gonna be even more fun :)

Either way, glad its done. The steering rack needs to be done now, thats fun!

I was wondering if you were going to install those this decade. :flipoff:

The front was a PITA to get out and 04RockoTaco practically pulled the rear one out when he got the axle shafts. :D

Avy, locker is helpful in snow, just not ice, and not on the road, in thick snow its helpful

Yeah getting the front out...
It hung up a little between the trans bell housing and steering rack,
but at the right turn she just slipped right out.

I don't know why the rear was sooo Hard...
