So what kind of knuckleheads do we have here?

If you're currently in school, select the appropriate degree you are pursuing.

If I missed something let me know so I can update the poll.

Well, I put Basic/Boot Camp (should rename this to military service or something better than Basic). I wasn't sure if that sounded better than "high school diploma" and there was no "some college" option. :flipoff:

Started out going to Cal Poly (SLO) for Kinesiology and quickly found out that just because I like to play sports, doesn't mean I was interested in fixing people who played sports. Joined the Marines for four years and picked an MOS that was fun and adventurous, but didn't really transfer well over to a real world job (not to many people in charge of amphibious armored personell carriers). Started going to a community college to at least get my general ed out of the way. Got married, got my contractor's license, had kids, and now I'm hoping the economy picks back up and people want extravagant tile jobs again. :D

I like school but have a hard time figureing out what I "wanted to be", everytime I start down a path, I'd get good at it and get bored with it.

BA Philosophy and Biology University of Wisconsin.

MA Philosophy Colorado State University by May dang it!

Spring 2010 Secondary Ed Science license CSU.

Have built rock crawlers, landscaped, cut trees and yahooed around, all applying that Big Ten education, now realizing I have always been a student of Philosophy interested in teaching. It has taken some time and school to put that together.

Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology . . . kinda a mix of Trade School / College.

Pending my full time rehire (currently back with corporate as a contract employee), I plan to apply my tuition reimbursement bene's toward either an MBA or, more likely, some form of engineering.

Well if were sharing prior jobs and experiences...

I originally went to get my AA in business and decided I hated the classes and the program. I then swapped to getting an AA in humanities, a basic transfer degree. My last year (I went 3 years on/off) I decided I wanted to major in criminal justice. However having already completed the humanities degree I was stuck and wasnt retaking everything to fit it.

I have taken the past semester and the upcoming off, probably will go back nthis summer or the fall. I am looking into taking classes for a BS in crim justice or the likes. Hopefully I can take them locally at the CC and transfer them, as school costs money and we all know a 4 year college costs way more than a 2 year per semester.

Along the way I have run a dept store's shoe section among other duties, done alot of contracting (masonary, carpentry, painting, etc) worked for compusa as a night frontend manager, night manager in a foodstore deli and now I work towing/roadside service with some mechanics in between. I really have to many skills, thats the biggest issue I face as my skills are to diverse to be all in one area.

I really would like to work at a repair/customizing shop, but the mechanics life unless your highend doesnt pay anymore and most of them are beat by 40 with arthritis so bad they wish they were dead. Instead I decided being a cop or something along those lines would be nice and perhaps running a shop or helping at at one part time would work well later on. Course having a towtruck also is worth it too, lotta cash there.

So in the end, we shall see where the road takes me. I have plenty of expierance

CJM

Its about the truck...it vibrates down the road and I discovered I no longer have any body mounts on the cab in 3 spots and the rest need replacing anyways. Hopefully solves my issues.

Oh I already have the AA in itself, its a direct transfer to rutgers university about an hour from me.

As for working the beat as a cop, call me nuts but I enjoy the action I will probably encounter. Couple that with a side job and I have the cash to buy my toys and still earn mypay. Leaving NJ is top priority tho..

I appreciate the advice and will look into it.

x2, especially in the "custom" aftermarket field . . . back when I was young and dumb I worked in a medium sized Ricer / performance speed shop. The owner was making cash like mad from all the little drug pushers and low life looking for AMG, AC Schnitzer, and honda/VW products and the like (not to mention the few 'vettes, stangs, porsches, etc that came in).

Though I will say that some of the dealer techs I was working with out west were making good cash (especialy in AZ) - shop foreman level techs were around $30/hr, some claiming near 6 figures a year.

I edited the poll to include military service. I hope those who served or are serving will articulate the details of their service so we can better appreciate their contribution. And, thank you for your service.

Sounds like it was kinda fun for awhile!

I really like working on 4x4s really and fast muscle type cars (civics and the like dont interest me to much, I like nissans and toyotas). My biggest asset is while I know how to do alot and have done it before, I am by no means excellent at any of it. I would much prefer to be the one running the operation, offering advice or handling the business side of things only b/c I know how to manage money really well and am good with customers.

I also love atvs, dirtbikes and such and am good at those :)

Custom work with a regular shop is where the cash out, you have your regular old customers and your custom dedicated customers. With the right crew and location you can do quite well. Even better is you offer towing services, specially if your in an area of alot of 4x4 trails. The people will need to be towed out be it they got stuck or someone nabbed them. Either way most companies cant do it, get yourself a 4wd HD tow truck or something you can use to drag them out to a real towtruck and you got a 1000 dollar call. Plus if its an impound you get the fees for that and storage-all big bucks right there. 1 night can get you 2k easy..
