Hey, I was thinking of getting a Toyota from the late seventies or early eighties and converting it to diesel. Has anyone done this? I think there are old diesel Toyota engines out there, but I don't know if they would mount to the transmission, or would I need a whole new trans, tcase, and different gearing?

Hey,

If I were doing a diesel swap in my 4Runner, I would look at using a 1kz turbo diesel.

If I were swapping a diesel into a 1st gen truck, I would look at the following engines:

Toyota 1KZ Turbo diesel
Toyota 2LII-T Turbo diesel
VW turbo diesel

I don't really know about which transmissions are compatible, but I would suggest buying a half cut if you were to do one of the diesel swaps. There is a kit somewhere out there to mate a VW turbo diesel to the Toyota trans. Can't remember where though.

4BT is an awesome motor too, but overkill for a 1st gen truck. They are heavy motors, and probably too tall to fit under the hood and maybe too wide to fit between the frame rails. I would look at a 4BT if I had a Land Cruiser, but not a 1st gen truck. Just my opinion though. [EDIT: It appears somebody did do a 4bt swap on an '84, but had to use a body lift and hack the frame for a proper fit]

Anyways, just my $.02.

Also, Toyota did sell the diesel pickups in the US back in the 80s. They are a bit hard to find, but they show up every now and then online.
