View Full Version : Twin Stick On Auto Trans T-Case Possible?

I have been contemplating my next drive train mortification.
I have been thinking twin stick since the e-locker swap.
But I was reading on Marlin's and FROR's sites that it is not possible to do on trucks with Auto trans.
Can someone enlighten me on this subject?
I didn't think that the trans would matter, but maybe something gets in the way?
Has anyone on here gone twin stick on an auto trans on a stock t-case?
The specs for the truck are as follows.
1997 4Runner
3.4l
Auto
Stock T-Case
any help would be great!

You can't do it with a chain drive case which is what comes behind the auto box. BUT, you can get a lefty gear drive t-case from Inchworm. AFAIK, Blake had/has issues with his leaking though.

So what t-case is behind ther manual trans tacomas?
Reason I ask is beacuse there is a kit on FROR avaiable for the manual trans t-case for the 4 and 6 cyl tacomas.
I thought that the tacomas and 4Runners shared the same t-case?

I am interested to see what comes of this. I assumed there was something inherent to the auto trucks, but don't know for a fact if the t-cases are different.
I have a 3.4 auto and twinstick but duals.
The other question is why. Don't mean to be rude, just wondering why. I have twinsticks because on top of the length of time and resources it took to install duals and swap the drivetrain, there was big what the heck factor.

I was just curious why it couldn't be done.
After wheeling the other day, it just would be nice to have the option to have 2lo.
I don't think I am ready for dual cases just yet.
I was thinking maybe just a reduction box sometime in the future.
I am wheeling what I have now, just exploring options.
I appreciate the constructive critisim, there are so many different set-ups out there for the drive trains so just seeing the oiptions.
I said that it would be better to do duals instead of twinsticks. I just didnt see the need for it imho.
But we all know once he is set on what hes doing, thats it lol..

I am not dead set on this.
It is a cheaper alternative to doing duals though...
at least the aspect of having 2lo

There is no relation to twins and duals, except the t-case they are on. Some people prefer them cause you can switch the low to the rear 'only', some people prefer them to help steer locked fronts. There are some who get them for no reason, except they sound cool. Whetever reason, do your research !

Another good question comes up.
Lets say I did do dual cases, I would still be using my stock t-case in the rear...
Now I could still keep the J-shift pattern on the rear and with the front case put it in low.
However just the idea of having rear low only would be nice...
keep the criticism coming but please help me try to figure out what the difference is between the manual t-case and auto t-case?
and why it is not possible to do the twin stick on the auto t-case (original topic question)

I have a 97 3.4l auto 4runner and I did it no problem.
But I do agree with cheese, I had mine in pieces to do the crawler so I figured I might as well while Im in there. I have used it a few times though, just not sure if its justified when that is all your doin.
Yea I spose a front locker and having the ability to do 2lo is nice..
I always felt the duals were a better option when you compare what they can do. An arb solves the front locker issue too.

As far as use, honestly it is a novelty. I have an ARB front that I use sparingly and disengages almost immediately.
Twin sticks and dual cases are coexistent, but not identical things.
If you add a reducer to what you have, the reducer will shift front to back with a single lever giving 1:1 or reduction. The rear will shift the standard J pattern, 2 high, 4 high or 4 low.
A friend, who's wife is a pilot, always laughs when driving my truck. There are 4 levers and 6 switches just on the console in the center.
We still have not resolved why it can't be done if the cases are the same.

Could a possible reason be the auto's shift linkage being in the way?

Its cool Brad.
Just going off what the Cheese said and trying to answer the original question.
I would just straight up and call the guys but I am always at school or work (like I am now) so.
