My wife this afternoon totalled the Tacoma. Luckily everyone is okay. Luckily im insured the Tacoma can and will be replaced. Still Im bummed. I have never gone through this before. So I have some questions:

1. How will they come up with a figure as far as compensation. (replacement cost, KBB)

2. Can I get some of my stuff removed? (Seat covers, Optima, floor mats)

3. Is their anything else I am missing? Please chime in....

Since im in a similar situation ill offer my thoughts. As far as compensation, They are going to go for ACV ( Actual cash value) Which means they get recent sell prices from your zip. here's what Im doing, trolling CL and any other place for ads on a similar model and print them out, When the adjuster goes to lowball you, say wait, this is how much they are going for *Insert CL printouts*. As far as your aftermarket stuff, you have time to get it out until make a settlement, I got my subs, stereo hellas...I just purchased a set of wheels and tires so i can get my ~~2000 mile BFG's off. Just remember, once you make a settlement, those floor mats are done, so get them off. And remember, You can argue with them and get more then they will originally offer. Sorry to hear the loss, Like I said, Im in the same spot at the moment. But you know were photo whores, Wheres the pics man !? :bling:

Thanks for the advise. Luckily with my policy, I am allowed a rental car. How long will it take for them to settle? One week? 2 weeks?

terrible news :( I'm glad to read that everyone was ok in the accident.

Most insurance carries will cover the market value of the vehicle in the condition of the vehicle. (mileage is factored into the figure).

The aftermarket accessories can be included provided that you can show receipts of all of your toys. They should be covered under a depreciated figure based on the depreciation of your vehicle.

Example: (keeping math simple)

Original New truck cost: $20,000
Current truck value: $10,000
Depreciation percentage: 50%

Aftermarket Accessories Total: $2,500
Depreciated Total: $1,250

Your estimated check will be $10,000 + $1,250 = $11,250.00

Hope that helps.

I've read that most carriers will take a few weeks to get everything sorted out but I have heard some horrible stories of it taking forever too. I'd consult with your carrier to make sure they expedite the process for you and ensure that they give you proper diminished value.

As for removing items, that'll be 100% up to your carrier.

Thanks guys for everything. Your answers are awesome.

Unfortunately I havent found any in my area. Tommorow morning I am going to the junk yard to get some of my stuff (Husky liners, seat covers).

Maybe after the truck is appraised I will go for my Optima battery.

Not much has happened today, had to take my wife to the local urgent care this afternoon. Shes still feeling sore and she has a constant headache. She is going to take it easy this week. She is staying home this week....

Did get the rental car. Talk about a "downgrade" going from a clean Toyota truck to a Chevy Cobalt. I feel safer in my 11 year old Camry.....

I have been looking all over the US for another double cab. I am taking off to Fort Collins to pick up a red double cab next weekend.

Any updates I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for the kind words.

Go to the shop where they towed it to and remove whatever you want. Most shops dont care, I know mine doesnt.

Update:

The insurance company just contacted my wife. She asked if we could remove personal effects plus some mods. They said no problem at all.

Tommorrow I am going to the truck to get my husky mats and the neoprene seat covers.

Also having a blast taking out my aggression on the rental car.

Let's just say a lot.

There's a psuedo-rally course not far from the house. Let's just say I have been a frequent visitor.

One more thing: I did pay the extra insurance.....

a quote comes to mind... "Jerry: Yeah, you better give me the insurance, because I am gonna beat the hell
out of this car."

Update:

I went to the salvage yard to get my stuff out of my truck as authorized by my insurance carrier.
The owner of the yard told me I can get anything out of the truck but using no tools. Of course I ignored him and brought my tool box. He threatened to call the police. I said "Go ahead and call them".Its my own vechicle. I told the only thing I wanted was my seat covers and I need to remove the back seat.

After a few minutes dealing with the police, I got everything I needed out of my truck.

I grabbed the following:

complete set of Husky floor liners
complete set of neoprene seat covers

Why on earth would they complain about you using tools? Having done the same song and dance many times with people we dont care at all what they do to the car once its there. They want their stuff off so be it, big sing says "not responsible for injurys sustained while in yard".

Least you got your stuff.

Update:

I should have updated sooner but work is work.... Anyway the insurance company shot us a figure. I was pleasantly suprised. The check will be here on Monday. I have the rental until Wednesday. I found a nice 04 Tacoma D-cab (TRD) in Milwaukee,WI. The truck only has 44K miles! The problem is there are a couple of major scratches from the bed cap on the bed. I am going to use this as a bargaining ploy...

Wish me luck....

Hopefully pics to follow.

J,

Glad to hear things worked out for you. WTF at the junkyard w/ that nonsense. Call the cops to take personal accessories from your own car?!? Nonsense.
