Ah, I got a new cable modem today and am finally taking full advantage of my cable internet. I don't think 14 mbps down is too bad considering its "just" cable:

Before with the D-Link modem I was peaking at about 6mbps down and 600kbps up (DOCSIS 1.0). This Motorola modem is compatible with the DOCSIS 1.1 protocol Comcast uses out here, and goes much faster

Nice. I think it has a lot to do with what server you test with. The one they recommend for me wasn't the fastest for me nearby (Frederick, MD). I tried Washington DC (about 4 hour drive) and got some nice results.

Oh it totally depends on the server used. My fastest server is Scottsdale, AZ. Albuquerque is slower, despite the fact that it's geographically closer.

I'm just happy that I got faster internet. I was starting to get very frustrated with my old modem, it kept dropping connection and wasn't going as fast as I felt I should be going... for $60/mo anyway.

I had that way back when, then everyone else got cable modems and of course the speed drops.

just because I feel left out, this is from the server in Atlanta, geographically, well right on top of me. :)
I have comcast also.

Try the one in DC. I'm curious what it nets for you.

Umm, wow that's fast...

OK, I'm on Comcast. What package are you guys paying for to get that kind of speed?

I have a need for SPEED!

I just have the $60/mo package. The important part is a DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 compatible modem, which with Comcast means a Motorola Surfboard Modem apparently. I got a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 from Best Buy, and man does it fly!

AH, my work is done for the night. I shut down all non-essential programs to make sure I wasn't using bandwidth somewhere else, and broke 30k

Oh, so my router is the issue. Since I have the triple play dealio, so I'm stuck with whichever modem that is (NOT a Motorola).

I just bought a replacement router a couple of months back (on the cheap of course). Can I use a switch too, or do I need some special super duper switch too?

I'm just using a Linksys WRT54G, nothing too exotic IMO. My computer is plugged into one of its ethernet ports on the back, and my wife uses the wireless with her laptop.

When you think about it, even 30 mbps isn't that fast in the grand scheme of networking. Most network routers or switches these days are 100 Mbps, if not 1000 Mbps.

I have the triple play too.
then from there it goes into a wireless router
and then from the wireless it is wired to my router in my room to go to my two desktops.

I shut down practically all my programs that use the internet (was downloading some music the last time I checked)

This on is from DC:

This one is from Newark, DE:

Then a second time from DC:

Then for fun I did NYC:

I find it interesting that last night while i was downloading it was going faster then it is now...

Remember that college's are usually on a T1 connection, not cable.

That's what I got but I think my wife is playing Warcraft right now... I'd love to see something up over 10Kb/s but it's probably not going to happen. The ironic thing is I think there's a backbone running through our area. :headscratch:

i couldnt either till i moved! :)

It is so much better than comcast, at least in this area. i was paying wayyyyy too much for comcast's middle speed plan and getting way worse numbers.
